Topic 1 Being a Volunteer of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games
As we know, Beijing will host the 29th Summer Olympic Games in 2008. As a Chinese, I think many people may think: what we can do for Beijing Olympic Games. Most of us are not athletes, we cannot take part in competitions directly; we are not officials either, we don't need to do the preparatory work. We are only ordinary people, what we can do!
There are still so many things we can do! For example, for me, I’m a graduate
majoring in Business Management. As far as I am concerned, I will keep on learning English hard, and apply for being a volunteer. I will use English to serve the Games together with other volunteers. And also, as a businessman at that time, I will avail myself to the Games at commercial opportunities that the Olympics brings to us, make more efforts to offer my contribution to the growth of our national economy.
And for all of us, with the goal to host a "Green Olympics", we shall plant more trees, grass and flowers. Don't waste water. In order to alleviate the problems of air pollution and traffic congestions, we shall take buses and subways more. With the goal to host a "People's Olympics", and in order to make our Olympics more attractive and to make our Beijing more beautiful, we shall help everyone we meet who needs help, we shall abide by traffic rules, don't smoke in public and no spitting. The most important way for our Chinese to support our Beijing Olympic Games, in my opinion, is to work hard on our duties.
I'm eager to welcome the coming Olympic Games together with my fellow countrymen, and I wish I could do something for the Olympics and for the city.
Topic 2 Studying Abroad
In recent years, there has appeared a great upsurge in studying abroad. Thousands of scholars and students have gone to foreign countries to study. Still more people are making great efforts in applying for going abroad.
Studying abroad, we will be able to see foreign lands, experience new things and make new friends. We can act as mediators between people of different cultures so as to promote international understanding. We can learn much more advanced knowledge of science and technology from the foreign countries. We can enjoy the contact with foreign cultures so as to increase the points of our own culture. We can see more clearly the strong and weak points of our own country by looking at her from outside. We have the opportunity to improve our foreign languages. And most important of all, we may get an advanced education which is not available at home
and which is of great importance to our future career.
However, it is true that to study abroad you will have to spend a lot of time and energy learning a foreign language. Language barrier is the most serious problem. Most students have difficulty understanding their lessons in the first few months. Financial difficulty is the second problem they are faced with. Most students have to find part-time jobs in order to support themselves while studying. Additionally, you will have to leave your family and friends for a long period of time, so sometimes you might feel lonely. In spite of these, the merits outweigh the demerits. Therefore, it is advisable to attend a school abroad, if you have an opportunity.
Topic 3 The Job Problem for College Graduates
Now college graduates come to realize that it is not easy to find a rewarding job. Many of them can’t get a job right after graduation from college. There are many causes resulting in such circumstance, I think: First and foremost, the competition in current society is so severe. Many people are able to receive high education and they try their best to get as many diplomas and certificates as they could. When going out for an interview, they hold them out to show their intelligence. However, they don’t realize that these are not enough during an interview; factors such as communication ability, high quality, informed knowledge should be taken into consideration as well. Hence, they must challenge themselves if they want to get a job. Next, many graduations wants to acquire a decent job that could not only make a lot of money but is easy. In many cases, they could get a job, but they give up such a position. In their views, as a graduate why could I work in such workplace, which is absolutely a waste of my time and energy, and I should sit to deal with some documents in the comfortable office. In a word, they are kind of greed and they don’t experience the truth of the saying that contented mind is perpetual feast. Last but not least, as for some people, they lose their way when leave school. Squandering most of t heir college career, they almost learn nothing but enjoy themselves. Hence, they are more lack of confidence and basic knowledge when they seek for a job, in all likehood, they might not gain a job.
To sum up, it is worth attaching great importance to college graduates. They are one of the powerful stimuli to make our county blooming. The government should take advantage of them to exert themselves and make them contribute to our country. Of course, college graduates should enhance their own comprehensive quality and skills, or they will fail in hunting a job they desire.
Topic 4 Career or family: which is more important?
Career or family: which is more important? Different people have different opinions. It goes without any question that career plays a key role in our life, because if people don’t have their careers, they can’t live independently and support their families. On the other hand, family is also an indispensable part of life, as many people will admit we can’t live alone without our family and it has the most important position in our hearts.
In my opinion, family will always be very important in my life. I was raised in a loving family, and I always counted on my Mom and Dad to be there when I needed them. I still do. I don’t think there is anything in life that provides the joy and security as family does.
I want to get married and have children. I’m looking forward to a long, loving
relationships with my spouse. I will marry someone who is family-oriented as I am and who believes that marriage is lasting forever. We’ll grow old together and have each other to count on through the good times and the bad.
My children will be a big part of my life. I’ll give them lots of love and try to raise them to be good people. I will look forward to teaching them things. Part of my reason for living is to perpetuate life, and I look forward to that responsibility. My kids will always be able to count on me, just like I could with my parents. Compared with career, I would like to think family is more important because of family being together, counting on one another, and giving love and security. Families are forever.
Version 2 Career or family: which is more important?
When asked about their opinion of career and family, people always respond differently. Some people deem it more important to pursue their career, while there are always other people who argue that family should be the number one in one’s life.
It goes without any question that career plays a key role in our life. In the very first place, career can give us an aim to live on. Without career, much of our living time will be certainly wasted. What’s more, career can provide us with a means to live on.
Most of the people earn their income from a job. On the other hand, family is also an indispensable part of life, as many people will admit. Family is always regarded as a place where we can escape from troubles in life. In addition, we can obtain a sense of belonging to from family. Without it, anyone will feel lonely and desperate.
In my opinion, career and family are not in opposition to each other. Rather, they can enhance each other so that one’s life can become better and better. Therefore, it’s
not a choice between right and wrong, but one between ideal and practical.
Topic 5 Saving Animals
We beings do not live in the world alone. We exist along with many resources. One of them is animal. That animal should be saved is indisputable.
First, animals can protect us. Insects would make it impossible for us to live on the globe and they would devour all our crops and kill our herds and birds were not for the protection we get from insect-eating animals.
Second, animals can provide us with many useful things. Wherever we live, we gain profits from animal. Imagine what our life would be like if we were disposed of meat, egg and milk, let alone many service animals provide free of charge.
Finally, animals are our friends. When both my brother and I entered university, I was often sad because each time I called back home, I could sense that Mama longed
for us extremely, but I could not go back to appease her. Once, however, via the phone I sensed that Mama was not so solicitous as before. It was because Father bought a little monkey for Mama. The little thing somewhat filled the space brother and I left. In north Canada there is a kind of life-saving dog. They help finding and saving strayed travelers in the snow-filled mountains. One saga was about a brave one who had saved 83 persons and who died of tiredness and coldness in his last journey.
God created animals before man. All men dream of heaven, and subtly speaking, heaven is not a place but a feeling. This feeling surely is concerned with cats’
puzzling, birds’ chirping and all the other sounds and sights from animals. So we must try our best to make sure that animals, one of the most valuable natural resources, can live long.
Topic 6: Changes in People’s Diet
According to a recent survey, grain, once the staple food for most Chinese, is now playing a less important role in people's diet, while the consumption of high quality food such as meat, milk and fruit has greatly increased. A marked change has taken place on the family dining table in the last 25 years.
There are two factors leading to the change. For one thing, people now enjoy a higher standard of living. In the old days few families could afford meat and milk every day, which often meant a big chunk of the family income. But now people have enough money to taste a rich variety of foods. For another, people of today pay more attention to nutrition. They are not merely content to fill the stomach. They are seeking a more balanced diet which will do good to their health.
In short, with people's standards of living getting higher and
higher, changes in their diet will be more obvious and greater.
Topic 7: Would u like to work for a global corporation? Why?
Yes, I’d like to. Working for a global corporation is really an opportunity appeals to me, because of it’s advantages.
Firstly, working for a global corporation can offor me chances to make friends from different countries and learn more about different cultures, it may help me widen my horizons of thinking.
Secondly, I can get many golden opportunities from a global corporation such as working or studying abroad, getting promotion ect. Anyway, many global corporations have better treatment and encouraging system to benefit the employees.
Last but not least, I can use English in a global corporatin, and I can improve my English a lot by daily practice.
On the other hand, working for a global corporation means strong competition, it is attractive to me, because I prefer challenging job.
Topic 8: Is like equal to love?
No, they are greatly different feelings, love is much stronger than like. Let’s take the relationship between boys and girls as an example.
One can use the word like to discribe his feeling about many people, he could like any nice person, for example, he could like his teachers, classmates, friends, or even strangers. But the word love could used in fewer cases,a boy or a girl could only use this word when he or she seriously means that he or she really loves someone with his or her whole heart.
I don’t mean these two feelings will be absolutely separated forever, sometimes the feeling of like can develop to love. When a boy and a girl like each other, they may date, they may spend more time together, it is possible for them to fall in love.
This is my understanding about like and love.
Topic 9 college students’ job hunting
In recent years, college students find it increasingly difficult to get a job. It sounds strange since young college students are usually intelligent, well-educated, knowledgeable, aspirant and eager to bring their talent into full play. Then what underlies the strange phenomenon?
There are several reasons for this. To begin with, nowadays college students aim too high. All they want are "good” jobs which could offer good salary, comfortable working condition, and high social status among others. Consequently, most college students are unwilling to accept vacant job they consider not "good" enough. Another reason is that there's a big gap between the majors some students study in school and the demands of vacant jobs. So companies think some students are not fit for the jobs.
A solution to the problem requires efforts on both the society and students. Companies should value the students, talent and knowledge while the later should not merely aim at material gains. They should be down-to-earth in building up their career. Furthermore, they should face their weak points so as to improve themselves and be more competent.
Topic 10 No More Video Games
In spite of objections from public opinion, many students can't draw themselves away from video games. It seems that the more they are prohibited from playing the games, the more they are tempted to do so. Many students indulge themselves in playing these games.
Video games are harmful to both the individual and society in many ways. First, they endanger the young people's health. Sitting in front of the computer for hours on end is bad for the player's eyesight as well as his entire physique. Secondly, they distract the young people’s attention from their work and study. Absorbed in the
games, the player often forgets to go to work or class. Sometimes even if they are at work or in class, they are still thinking of the games they played or are going to play after work or after class. As a result, they quickly fall behind others in their work and study. Thirdly, they lead young people to moral degradation. Some young people are especially interested in games that are filled with violence. If they play these games a
long time, they may also settle disagreements through violence, which may give rise to higher crime rate.
Therefore, it is time we took effective measures to solve this problem. On the one hand, young people should be made fully aware of the danger of video games. On the other, illegal video game houses should be eliminated, and software producers should be encouraged to make more beneficial video games in the future.
Topic 11 College English Teaching in China
Much has been discussed recently on English teaching at college. Someone says that it is a total failure. To some extent it is reasonable to say so. After ten-year English learning, most graduates can't communicate properly with foreigners. Nor can they translate between languages. Let alone write in English. Where are the problems?
To begin with, English teaching at college is, to a great extent, teacher-centered, turning a language class into an information class. It is still very common in the classroom that the teacher explains every language point in detail, while students take notes all the time. Secondly, culture is neglected in English teaching because of poor text design. some redundant unrealistic materials and a great of grammar and structure exercise in the text lead to students memorizing a large vocabulary and a lot of English rules ,few students know how, when and where to use them, finally ,test-oriented education, in a sense; misleads and impedes college English
teaching in china .for example, college English test band four six is so overemphasized in some college that teachers teach to the test. Sacrificing learning for the sake of test results, and students only learn to pass the examination, as a result, students' actual language competence is weakened tough the passing rate has increased.
In conclusion, Chinese English teaching is to be reformed. Students should be centered on, culture knowledge should be introduced in language teaching .and examination should be dealt with appropriately.
Topic 12 Online shopping
Since the Internet was put into use, it has changed the way we shop. The number of people shopping online has been on the rise. Online shopping is especially popular with young people. But like every coin has two sides, online shopping has its advantages and disadvantages.
Online shopping has its advantages in relation to off-line shopping:
; You can buy at any time, since you are not restricted to opening hours.
; Your order and the execution of the contract are accelerated.
; The website content could be up to date and comprehensive.
; Your location and the location of the online shop are not of importance.
; Online shopping compensates the conventional disadvantage of the location. The disadvantages are:
; Information on the Websites is mostly standardised. The personal face-to-face
consultation and information dialog is absent. There is no individual contact.
; Products are sometimes only described as they are sometimes shown as a
photograph. You cannot examine the quality and condition of the product prior
to its delivery and purchase.
; It is sometimes difficult to access background information about the online
shop. It requires some experience to be able to discover the business seat of
the shop, its actual size, credibility, and costumer satisfaction.
; It is sometimes difficult to determine the governing law of the contract.
Topic13 The Protection of the Environment
There has been a discussion recently about how we can protect the environment. It is true to the present situation that the environment is polluted seriously and everybody should have sense of duty to protect it. But, there are still some people who have some wrong opinions about protecting the environment.
In fact, there are many ways to solve its problems. Firstly, as a man, we can do many things, though they may be very small, for example, don't throw rubbish anywhere, don't spit anywhere and so on. Secondly, to a factory, the manager should adopt more advanced technology which costs less energy and causes less pollution, the factory should also take scientific ways to solve the pollution which has been caused. Finally, to a country, the government should take a sensible way. That's to say, with the development of economy, the environment problems become larger , but we can't allow solving the environment problems at the expense of economic growth to go on. Furthermore, the country should moderately explore energy and do their best to keep the ecosystem balance. In a word, all things are done by laws that man is the measure of all things.
We have only one earth, nature is supposed to serve us, so protecting environment means protecting ourselves. All in all, let's try our best to protect the environment!
Topic14 My view on the Postgraduate Craze
Every year, millions of college student will sit for the postgraduate entrance examination. More and more students have regarded the pursuing of a master degree as an indispensable part of their education.
What is to account for their enthusiasm for a postgraduate diploma? First, it is the demands of the time. In an age of knowledge updating and information explosion, what you have learned in the college can hardly meet the demands of society. Talents of high quality who are equipped with the latest knowledge and skill will be needed more than ever. That is why many students will strive for further progress.
Second, we all recognize that the more education you have, the more likely you are to succeed. Compared with those without a master degree, masters will enjoy more preferential treatment, for example, better salaries, more opportunities for promotion and training. A post graduation degree can guarantee a more promising career.
Last but not least, with the graduation of a large number of college students, competition for jobs become more and more fierce. One way to gain some advantage over others is to have a higher degree.
No wonder millions of students will consider pursuing a postgraduate degree.
Topic 15 “Only-children” Face the Challenge of University
At present, more and more kids from one-child family are attending universities. Most of them are intelligent and fond of study, but some are comparatively less capable of handling their social affairs. So they also face many challenges of university.
As I know, kids living in one-child family have a little bad temper more or less. They are used to relying on their parents. When they get into trouble, they don’t know how to deal with and always ask their parents for help. Moreover, as they have no sisters or brothers they don’t know how to get along well with others when they are at school. Thus, I think, they are comparatively less capable in these aspects.
However, from my point of view, it’s not their fault to be like this, they’re the inevitable products of certain times.
Topic 16 The Aging of the Chinese Society
As we all know, the population is aging in our country with the development of the society and the improvement of our living conditions and health care. The percentage of old people among overall population has become higher and higher.
Now this problem attracts the attention of both the government and the people. They are doing their best to care about old people, especially, the old in rural areas. This concerns the social security. In the cities, retired people could get pension so that they can support themselves, which can ensure their material life. And the spiritual life also plays an important part in their lives. As far as emotional life is concerned, the remarriage of old people has become a common phenomenon. I think their grown-up children and the society should understand them.
Aging is the natural process of growing old, so being healthy is more important. They can have some recreation activities such as Taiji, chess, dance parties and so on. They can go to parks and theaters or feed some birds and other pets
In a word, the society should attach importance to the old people.
II. Answers to some Questions (for reference):
1. Could you say something about the pollution in city where your college is located?
We all know that clean air is important to good health. Whatever you go and whatever you do, you are always surrounded by a sea of gases that we call air. If there are impurities in the air, they may be absorbed by our bodies and make us ill. We need clean air, but unfortunately, air pollution is present in our city. Too many cars have
created a lot of serious problems besides congestion, accidents and fast fuel consumption, cars are responsible for a good part of air pollution. There is another pollution existing in our city, that is water pollution. Many people throw waste into the river, as a result, many water species are dying out. Several years ago, the water in our city is polluted by a factory. They poured poison water into GanJiang River. That led to our city short of clean water.
So we must take measures to protect our environment.
2，What do you think of the situation of pollution in China at present? What can you do to protect the environment?
I think the situation of pollution in China at present is very serious. As the world is getting more densely populated, pollution presents a severe problem. More people make more waste. All this waste is polluting our surroundings. Pollution has a bad influence on our life. The air is polluted by the smoke and fog coming out of the factory chimneys. Plants die for want of fresh air. The river is polluted and the fish are unfit to live. There is noise pollution made by cars and factories, etc, which hurts the ear. Moreover, the accumulation of rubbish in the streets may dirty the city and ruin our health. This is mainly due to the improper disposal of rubbish by people.
Then how should we protect the environment? First, I suggest more trees should be planted to keep the air fresh. We should purify the water and make use of the waste and turn harm into good. The other way is by creating laws to punish those who destroy the environment. In addition, new environmentally constructive means must be found through scientific and technical work.
3. Do you think smoking should be banned in China? Why or why not?
I think smoking should be banned in China. Cigarette smoking is generally believed to be a bad habit. It involves a great loss of money and time. It dulls our brains, and weakens our bodies. Smokers may treat it as a means of killing time. It is a pity that they don’t know anything about the evils of this bad habit. First of all,
smokers have to spend a big sum of money on cigarettes every month. As a student, we live off our parents and cost at least ten percent of our expenses each month. It is unwise for us to spend so much money doing something that is harmful to our health. Secondly, apart from other sicknesses, smokers are exposed to more chances of developing lung cancer, which has already been proved by scientific findings. Smokers run a high risk of having a heart attack. It also contributes to other smoking-related health problems. Finally, smoking is not only harmful to the smoker himself, but also dangerous to people around, especially young children.
Many college boys are fond of smoking cigarettes. I should advise them to get rid of this bad habit as soon as they can.
4. Do you want to have a boyfriend or girlfriend when you are in college? Why or why not?
Yes. I want to have a boyfriend or girlfriend when I am in college. As you know, we have to lead an independent life in college without our parent’s care, which always
makes us feel homesick and lonely. Therefore, I hope my boyfriend or girlfriend could
take care of me and help me out when I am in trouble.
5. Do you believe “falling in love at the first sight”? Why or why not?
Of course not. How could you fall in love with someone whom you know nothing about. You may get a good first impression of someone, but it is really hard to say that you fall in love with the one you have seen for only one time.
6. What brings a happy marriage, love, money or something else?
From my point of view, mutual love might lead to a happy marriage. Money is vital but not the most important factor in marriage, while love is indispensable. 7: Nowadays more and more college students are using cell phones. What do you think of that?
cell phone plays an important part in our daily lives .on the one hand ,cell phone makes our lives more convenient with it ,we can communicate with our parents or friends easily, we can get information through it. on the other hand, cell phone sometimes can bring us troubles ,for example, when we fall asleep, someone we don’t know calls us and this makes our sleeping uncomfortable.
8. How do you keep in touch with your friends, text message, e-mail or letter? Explain why.
I often keep in touch with my friends with cell phone .because phone can make our communication more easily and the cost of it is cheap.
9. Do you have a part-time job while you study in the university? How do you feel about the part-time job?
I seldom take part-time job, when I study in the university .because I think if I take part time job ,I will have no time to learn my lessons.
10. Where do you prefer to work – relatively developed coast areas or the less
developed western area of China? Why?
if I had a choice between two different places ,I would choose to work in the less developed western area of china ,because I think that as a teachers' college student ,to help the children in those area is my duty. the children there need better teachers to teach them. they have rights to enjoy better education
11. Can you say something about the entertainment available in your college?
There are many entertainments in our college. In the spare time, we may have a ball, hold a party, a speech or singing contest, a sport meet, or go to the movie or concert, weather permitting, we may go for an outing and have a picnic. We also attend various academic lectures, join in some clubs and other organizations run by the Students’ Union.
12. What activities do you do to relax in your spare time? Why do you like it?
