    11 TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR SERTOMA UPON THE

    OCCASION OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF 12

    13 ITS FOUNDING, AN ORGANIZATION WHICH EXISTS FOR

    14 THE HIGH AND NOBLE PURPOSE OF SERVICE TO

    15 MANKIND BY FACILITATING HUMAN PROGRESS IN

    16 HEARING AND SPEECH HEALTH, EDUCATION, FREEDOM,

    17 AND DEMOCRACY; AND TO PROCLAIM APRIL 11, 2012,

    18 “SERTOMA DAY” THROUGHOUT SOUTH CAROLINA.

    20 Whereas, Sertoma is a service organization which exists for the 21 high and noble purpose of providing service (SER) to (TO) 22 mankind (MA) and making life worthwhile for communities 23 throughout North America; and

    24

    25 Whereas, Sertoma has had a long and storied presence in the State 26 of South Carolina since 1949 and currently boasts forty-eight 27 active Sertoma Clubs with 1313 members; and

    28

    29 Whereas, in its sixty-three years of participation with Sertoma, 30 South Carolina has provided eight presidents of Sertoma 31 International: C. Tucker Weston, M.D., Columbia, 1959-60; Paul 32 A. “Pat” Thrash, Columbia, 1966-67; John A. Mason, Columbia,

    33 1975-76; Thomas J. Horner III, North Augusta, 1981-82; Mitchell 34 B. Foster, Chester, 1983-84; Charles W. Smith, Spartanburg, 35 1990-91; Thomas H. “Tommy” Brush, Charleston, 2002-03; and

    36 Carol Moore, Spartanburg, 2008-09; and

    38 Whereas, Christian T. Weston III of Columbia will assume the 39 duties of international president on July 1, 2012, to begin 40 Sertomas second century of service to mankind; and

    1 Whereas, in communities throughout the Palmetto State, Sertoma 2 Clubs have provided millions of dollars through fundraising 3 projects to many local charities, including speech and hearing 4 charities; and

    5

    6 Whereas, Sertomans in South Carolina have donated thousands of 7 service hours for the betterment of mankind all over the State; and 8

    9 Whereas Sertoma has interacted with elementary and middle 10 school children through its Freedom and Democracy Sponsorship, 11 instilling the youth of our communities with the principles of law, 12 order, justice, and pride in our national heritage through essay 13 writing contests and other projects; and

    14

    15 Whereas, Sertomans in South Carolina raised funds for and built

    Camp Sertoma South Carolina on Lake Hartwell near Clemson, a 16

    17 camp for speech and hearing impaired children and

    18 under-privileged children to attend each summer with tuition paid 19 by the Sertoma Clubs; and

    20

    21 Whereas, Sertoma Clubs have made a profound, positive impact on 22 communities in South Carolina by their service to mankind and 23 have made life worthwhile for many citizens of the State through 24 their efforts; and

    25

    26 Whereas, joining with their colleagues throughout North America, 27 Sertomans in South Carolina are celebrating the centennial 28 anniversary of its founding. Now, therefore,

    30 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 31 concurring:

    32

    33 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 34 resolution, recognize and honor Sertoma upon the occasion of the 35 one hundredth anniversary of its founding, an organization which 36 exists for the high and noble purpose of service to mankind by 37 facilitating human progress in hearing and speech health, education, 38 freedom, and democracy; and proclaim April 11, 2012, “Sertoma 39 Day” throughout South Carolina.

    41 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 42 Sertoma.
