Topic/Issue: Type 3 Incident Management Team Recognition:
This spring the Southwest Coordinating Group requested Southwest Zone Boards establish standing Type 3 Incident Management Teams, to provide southwest agencies with qualified Type 3 Incident Management Teams, in accordance with the Interagency Standards for Fire and Fire Aviation Operations. The expectation was that Type 3 Incident Management Teams would increase the capacity for local, qualified expertise to manage extended attack fires/Type 3 incidents, and to temporarily manage an incident of emerging complexity.
The Southwest Coordinating Group would like to commend the Northern Arizona, Albuquerque, Pecos, & Santa Fe/Taos Zones for organizing Type 3 Incident Management Teams, using a pre-season application process and designating a standing team, with alternates and trainees for the 2009 season. When activated, these teams made a difference, in firefighter and public safety, provided appropriate local management response for the incident complexity, and aided in reducing incident costs. They also encouraged participation by untapped non-fire personnel available locally to assist with incident organizational functions.
The Southwest Coordinating Group greatly appreciates the efforts and support of the Zone Boards, Local Agencies and Team Members in demonstrating outstanding leadership and commitment to provide Type 3 Incident Management Teams to extended attack fires and local incidents of Type 3 complexity. Organization and use of zone Type 3 Incident Management Teams will also help in building future Type 1 and 2 Incident Management Team capacity.
