    SGFC MINUTES

    MARCH 3, 2009

In attendance: Julian Quintanilla, Kati Proctor, Sohrab Kohli, Jarrod Wolf, Danielle

Traister, Prerna Nadathur (proxy for Mark Redmond), Jennifer Kennedy

Total Amount Requested: $13,507.19

    Total Amount Allocated: $11,253.00

Organization: Coterie Investments Event: Movie and Pizza Night

    Budget: $185.00

Proposal: Coterie Investments will be hosting a study break at the end of the quarter and will serve pizza and show the movie Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room. This budget

asks for money for pizza, soda, plates and cups, and advertising. About 40 people are

expected to attend. The group has some money leftover from Annual Allocations, but

would like to save this money for possible events in the future.

Thoughts:

? This group is required to purchase movie rights to show this movie

? This is very expensive pizza, and there are cheaper options than Pizza Capri

? Coterie Investments can easily use the money they have right now and come to SGFC

to request more funds if they need it

? Given the amount of money they have in their account, a reasonable amount to fund

    is $35.00

    ?

Motion:

? Motion to fund $35.00. One in favor, one opposed, two abstentions.

     MOTION FAILS.

? Motion to fund $35.00. All in favor, none opposed, no abstentions.

     MOTION PASSES: 4-0-0

Final Budget: $35.00

Organization: Make a Joyful Noise thEvent: Joint Concert with MaJ'N and Yale Gospel Choir, March 12 2009

    Budget: $276.00

Proposal: MaJ’N will be putting on an a cappella and gospel concert for an hour at the Hyde Park Union Church. The Yale Gospel Choir will be joining them, but won’t be contributing towards the cost of the event because they are visiting. Because of the size of

the choir, Bond Chapel is not a large enough venue. The budget asks for the venue rental

fee, set-up fee, and sexton fee.

Thoughts:

? It sounds like this group has done research and looked for the cheapest option

Motion:

? Motion to fund in full. Four in favor, none opposed, no abstentions.

     MOTION PASSES: 4-0-0

    Final Budget: $276.00

Organization: MICRO Event: UChicago StarCraft Team League Match Budget: $536.39

Proposal: MICRO has recently joined an intercollegiate StarCraft league and will be

competing against different schools each week. This week, they will be playing Emory.

About 6 or 7 students will be playing while about 15 students will observe as the games

are projected on a screen. This budget asks for money to buy snacks for these games

starting from next week and throughout spring quarter.

Thoughts:

? SGFC does not usually fund for food for each meeting.

? It would be reasonable to fund about a third of this budget so as to fund snacks for

    about three meetings.

Motion:

? Motion to fund $161.00. Four in favor, none opposed, no abstentions.

     MOTION PASSES: 4-0-0

    Final Budget: $161.00

Organization: Model UN Team Event: Capital Improvement

    Budget: $991.00

Proposal: MUN is requesting a new computer and new printer because their current

equipment no longer works. The group receives most of its funding from the CAT fund,

but it cannot fund this capital improvement request because its money has been allocated

for MUN conferences and other CAT groups. MUN group members have tried fixing

their current computer and printer but have not been able to. The new equipment is

expected to last about three years.

Thoughts:

? Did SGFC fund the last computer? Is there another route through which items like

    this are funded?

? It is worthwhile for this group to buy its own printer because it has very great printing

    needs

Motion:

? Motion to fund in full. Three in favor, none opposed, one abstention.

     MOTION PASSES: 3-0-1

    Final Budget: $991.00

Organization: Queers and Associates, Interested Ladies of Lambda Theta Alpha

Event: Cherrie Moraga Speaks on Gender and Identities Budget: $3500

Proposal: Q&A and LTA are inviting guest speaker Cherrie Moraga for a lecture and

poetry reading about gender and identity issues. About 125 people are expected to attend.

The budget includes Ms. Moraga’s lodging and transportation expenses, food, and

advertising. This event will be funded $2500 by Queers and Associates (from Annual

Allocations), the Interested Ladies of Lambda Theta Alpha, and the Center for Gender

    Studies.

Thoughts:

? It may be reasonable to fund this event about $3000 and they can fundraise $500 over

    the next month

? However, this group has done a lot of outside funding and has already appealed to

    most likely sources of funding.

Motion:

? Motion to fund $3000.00. Four in favor, none opposed, no abstentions.

     MOTION PASSES: 4-0-0

    Final Budget: $3500.00

Organization: Yalla Event: State Practices and Zionist Images 3/11/09 Budget: $350.00

Proposal: Yalla has invited David Wesley to discuss his new book, State Practices and

Zionist Images. The budget includes a $250 honorarium and food from the Nile. About

20 people are expected to attend.

Thoughts:

    ?

Motion:

? Motion to fund in full. Four in favor, none opposed, no abstentions.

     MOTION PASSES: 4-0-0

    Final Budget: $350.00

Organization: Yalla Event: Gaza Photo Exhibit

    Budget: $450.00

Proposal: Yalla has invited Matthew Cassel to exhibit his photographs from the aftermath of the siege in Gaza. The exhibition will be followed by a lecture and question

and answer session with Cassel about the current situation in Gaza. The photographs will

be displayed in the Hallowed Grounds. The budget includes $200 for printing costs and a

    $250 honorarium.

Thoughts:

    ?

Motion:

? Motion to fund in full. Four in favor, none opposed, no abstentions.

     MOTION PASSES: 4-0-0

    Final Budget:

Organization: Yalla Event: Dr. Mads Gilbert Lecture

    Budget: $3978.80

Proposal: Yalla has invited Dr. Mads Gilbert, a Norwegian physician that was in Gaza

during the latest military assault, to lecture about his experience. The budget includes

airfare for Dr. Gilbert from Oslo, Norway to Chicago, his lodging and transportation

expenses, AV equipment rental, an honorarium for moderator Mezna Qato, and

refreshments. Yalla has hired a moderator in order to make sure this contentious lecture

does not get out of hand. About 350 people are expected to attend.

Thoughts:

? The plane ticket is very expensive, and the group admitted that there were cheaper

    options.

? Yalla can do a better job coordinating with the other schools involved so as to more

    equally split costs

? It would be reasonable to fund all expenses other than the flight for now with the

suggestion that the group return to SGFC after exploring all alternatives ? Without the flights, the budget comes to about $2400

? Refreshments are not necessary for this event

Motion:

? Motion to fund $2250.00. Three in favor, one opposed, no abstentions.

     MOTION PASSES: 3-1-0

    Final Budget: $2250.00

Organization: Student Government th, thstEvent: Spring Airport Shuttle March 1920, 21

    Budget: $3240.00

Proposal: The Student Government would like to provide shuttles to transport students

from campus to Midway and O’Hare airports. In the past, the shuttles have been filled

over capacity. About 600-700 students are expected to utilize this service.

Thoughts:

    ?

Motion:

? Motion to fund in full. Four in favor, none opposed, no abstentions.

     MOTION PASSES: 4-0-0

    Final Budget: $3240.00
