    1.6 INTERPRETATION

    Definitions

    General: For the purposes of this worksection the definitions given in AS/NZS 1768 and the following apply:

    - Bonding conductor: Provides electrical connection between the lightning protection system and other metalwork and between various metal parts of a structure or between earthing systems. - Earthing boss (terminal lug): A metal boss specially designed and welded to process plant, storage tanks, or steelwork to which earthing conductors are attached by means of removable studs and nuts or bolts.

    - Connecting strap: A short conductor for the connection of structures to the lightning protection system.

    1.7 SUBMISSIONS

    Insulation level

    General: If an Isolated System (ISODC) is documented, provide evidence that the insulation level is in conformance with the requirements of IEC 62305.

    Records

    General: Provide records to AS/NZS 1768 clause 8.4.

    Shop drawings

    General: Submit layout drawings of the lightning protection system showing the following information: - Details of the locations and types of joints, air and earth terminations. - Downconductors, materials and the provisions for minimising galvanic action. - Arrangement of components in earthing pits.

    - Provision for building movement and building penetrations.

    2 PRODUCTS

    2.1 GENERAL

    Lightning protection system

    Protection level: [complete/delete]

    2.2 AIR TERMINALS

    General

    Design: Provide ERICO air terminals, mounting bases and accessories coordinated with building structure and roof top plant equipment.

    Air terminal size: 12.7 mm diameter x 920 mm high.

    Material: Copper

    Design loads: To AS 1170.

    Supports: Provide ERICO mounting bases and assemblies to support the air terminals under the wind load and natural harmonic resonance conditions expected at the site.

    2.3 ISOLATED SYSTEM (ISODC)

    General: Provide a 1 metre high air terminal, isolated from the general building structure and roof top equipment by mounting it above the roof top structures on an ERICO isolated fibre glass reinforced (FRP) pole.

    Spacing of air terminals: Place air terminals to achieve the nominated protection level using the rolling sphere method to AS/NZS 1768.

    2.4 DOWNCONDUCTORS

    Structural reinforcement encased in concrete

    General: For building structures with reinforcement steel encased in concrete about the perimeter use the reinforcement steel as lightning protection downconductors. Make sure the steel is electrically continuous from top to bottom and that the overall resistance is less than 0.2 ohms. Electrical connection: Provide ERICO bond plate assembly DB12CS701 between the air terminal network and the steel reinforcement.

    Independent downconductors

    General: Provide ERICO Smoothweave tinned copper cable conductors and support accessories to AS/NZS 1768 Table 4.6.

    Cable conductors: ERICO Smoothweave copper cable system supported and joined with ERICO cable support brackets, saddles, clamps and fittings. 2Cable conductor size: 35 mm.

    2.5 EQUIPOTENTIAL BONDING CONDUCTORS

    General 2General: Provide ERICO 35 mm Smoothweave tinned copper cable bonding conductors and support

    accessories to bond roof mounted structures and external services to the lightning protection system. External steel structures include:

    - Aerial supports.

    - Roofing structures.

    - Cladding.

    - Piping systems.

    2.6 EARTHING ELECTRODES

    General

    General: Provide a dedicated earthing system using driven ERICO copper bonded steel earthing electrodes and accessories located directly below each downconductor. Earthing electrodes terminating a series of downconductors about the perimeter of the building may be interconnected. Earthing electrodes pits: Provide ERICO PIT03 inspection pit to AS/NZS 1768 for each earth electrode. 3 EXECUTION

    3.1 INSTALLATION

    General

    Standards: To AS/NZS 1768, AS/NZS 3000 and AS/CA S009.

    Earthing system resistance: To AS/NZS 1768.

    Dissimilar metals: Join dissimilar metals with fittings of electrolytically compatible material. Lightning protection earthing system

    General: Maintain separation of the lightning protection earthing system from:

    - Electrical distribution protective earth.

    - Telecommunications earth.

    - Functional earths.

    Thermal expansion

    General: Provide expansion joints in horizontal air terminations between fixing points. Saddles: Install saddles to allow for thermal expansion of downconductors and support downconductors in both the vertical and horizontal configuration to ERICO recommendations. Saddle spacing: To AS/NZS 1768.

    3.2 AIR TERMINATIONS

    General

    Mounting: Mount air terminals to the building structure and connect to the downconductor/bonding conductors with ERICO air terminal bases and connecting accessories.

    3.3 DOWNCONDUCTORS

    Structural reinforcement encased in concrete

    Test link: Provide ERICO DB12CS701 grounding plate welded to reinforcement steel via a cable tail at the base of the building to act as a test point. The same arrangement can be used at the top of the building to provide a break out point for connection to the air terminal network and test point for checking continuity of the down conductors.

    Protection: Install or enclose the earth test link to protect the connection and prevent injury to persons. Number: Provide a sufficient number of test points around the perimeter of the building to allow satisfactory testing of the earthing continuity and resistance.

    Electrolytic action: If metals of different types are connected together, or in close proximity, prevent electrolytic action.

    Earthing electrodes: Measure the ground resistance of the reinforcement steel in foundation piles to be used as earthing electrodes, before the installation of slab steel that interconnects the columns. If not conforming to the recommendations of AS/NZS 1768, provide additional earth electrodes or an earthing mat. Use the ERICO DB12CS701 ground plate as a connection point when adding earthing electrodes.

Independent downconductors

    Saddle installation: Provide support of Smoothweave downconductors in both the vertical and horizontal configuration using ERICO LPC801L P clip or LPC810L adhesive tinned saddles. Where Smoothweave cable needs to be joined, use ERICO LPC502L tinned parallel splice. Spacing: To AS/NZS 1768.

    Protection of downconductors system exposed to mechanical damage: Cover with a moulding or tubing of non-conductive material.

    Isolated System (ISODC)

    Air terminal connection: Connect the ERICO ISODC conductor to the air terminal within the FRP mast. Run by the most direct path and bond into roof conductors of the conventional lightning protection system.

    Fixing: Fix the ISODC to the structure using metallic fasteners at intervals of no more than 1 m. Maximum bend radius: 0.5 m.

    Maximum route length: Do not exceed that applicable for the documented lightning protection level. End termination: Terminate the end of the ISODC conductor to be bonded into the conventional lightning protection system with the lower termination adaptor and protective wrapping, to limit water penetration into adapter. 2Cable conductor size: 50 mm aluminium.

    Insulation level: To IEC 62305.

    Downconductor finish: Generally use natural finish of the strip or cable conductors. If documented, cover the downconductors with a finish to match the building.

    3.4 EQUIPOTENTIAL BONDING CONDUCTORS

    Bonding

    Fixing of bonding conductors: Provide fixing and support as required to properly secure. Fix Smoothweave Cable using ERICO LPC801L tinned P clip. Where Smoothweave cable needs to be joined, use ERICO LPC502L, tinned parallel splice.

    Foundation or footing: Provide ERICO DB12CS701 grounding plate welded to reinforcement steel via a cable tail at the base of the building to act as a bonding point for the lightning protection system. Bonding of roof mounted structures

    General: Provide earthing bosses and connecting straps as required for the connection of external structures to the lightning protection system.

    Earthing boss: Provide ERICO 710160 welded boss with stud washer and nut arrangements, for bonding structures to the lightning protection system.

    Earthing boss materials: Use materials which are compatible with one another to prevent corrosion and to make a sound electrical connection.

    Connecting Strap: Provide copper, flexible or rigid connection straps or cables to allow connection from the earthing boss provided on structures to the general lightning protection system. Connecting strap material: Use materials which are compatible with the materials in use. 3.5 ALUMINIUM CONDUCTORS

    General

    Joining of aluminium conductors: Clean contact surfaces and provide corrosion-inhibiting compound to inhibit oxidation.

    Aluminium conductors: Avoid direct contact between aluminium conductors and concrete, mortar and the ground to avoid corrosive effects on the conductors.

    3.6 EARTHING ELECTRODES

    General

    Earthing electrode: Provide copper bonded steel earthing electrodes located at the perimeter base of the building directly below the downconductor. Terminate downconductors using ERICO cable and strap accessories.

    Earthing system resistance: To AS/NZS 1768. If earthing electrodes cannot be driven into the ground, install the electrodes in predrilled holes backfilled with ERICO GEM25A, a highly conductive, non-corrosive, carbon based, ground enhancement material that conforms to IEC 62561-7.

Earth terminations

    General: Provide earth terminations as documented in the Earth terminations schedule. Electrode pits

    General: Install driven earth electrodes in dedicated pits. For pits installed in concrete paths or for

    reinforced steel concrete paths, bond any reinforcement steel to the earth electrodes.

    Marking: Mark pit covers with the words: LIGHTNING PROTECTION EARTH.

    Alternative to driven stakes: If electrodes cannot be driven into the ground, install the electrodes in

    predrilled holes backfilled with Ground Enhancement Material (GEM).
