When describing the opportunity to serve as executive director of Rankin (Pa.) Christian Center, a partner of American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS), the Rev. Paul Sandusky is unreserved. “This is undoubtedly the best job I have had,” Sandusky says. “It

is the first faith-based organization that I have directed, and I find that I function best in this environment.” He cites caring staff motivated by Christian values and an active working board of directors as two important reasons.

Sandusky was drawn to the quality and scope of the work at Rankin. Founded in 1904 for the purpose of educating Slovak peoples, the ministry offers a broad range of comprehensive services to the community today.

Rankin Christian Center provides tutoring services and a judicial system mentoring and intervention program for youth who are first-time, nonviolent offenders. Outreach to children includes after-school and Head Start programs, as well as summer day camp. A cooperative relationship with Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh brings parenting

education and support to at-risk families. Case-management services for mentally retarded adults were added five years ago.

We are located in the heart of Rankin, the most economically deprived section of Allegheny County,” explains Sandusky. “Over time we have become the hub of the

community.” Issues facing residents of the neighborhood include a lack of jobs with living wages, adequate food and nutrition, and decent, affordable housing.

In reaching out to the community, the Rankin Christian Center seeks to be a Matthew 25 ministry, according to Sandusky. “We are here as servants to those who are homeless,

naked, hungry or in jail,” he says. “We want to follow in our Master's footsteps.”

Paul Sandusky has two children, Shawn Danos and Bryn Sandusky, and two grandchildren, Cameron Danos and Joshua Danos.
