    Purpose This unit standard is for people in the hairdressing industry who wish to be

    able to highlight the hair using a weaving technique.

     People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare to and highlight

    hair using a weaving technique; and complete follow-up actions.

1 Definitions

     legislative requirements refer to the obligations of the employer and/or employee

    under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and Health (Hairdressers)

    Regulations 1980;

     following service may include but is not limited to haircut, blow wave.

    2 In this unit standard all work must comply with legislative requirements and must

    ensure optimum hair condition and maximum client comfort at all times.

    3 For assessment a full head of highlights must be completed to commercially

    accepted standards, using a weaving technique. The highlighting colour must be

    highlift or bleaching product.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Prepare to highlight hair using a weaving technique.

Performance criteria

    1.1 Consultation with the client identifies and confirms work needed.

1.2 The hair and scalp are analysed.

    Range porosity, elasticity, texture, density, length, scalp conditions,

    growth patterns, base shade, reflect, percentage of grey.

    1.3 The techniques and products to be used are selected in accordance with hair

    and scalp analysis and confirmed outcome.

    1.4 The client is protected against water and/or chemical spillage.

    1.5 Hair is prepared for highlighting in accordance with manufacturer's instructions,

    the technique to be used, and confirmed outcome.

1.6 Equipment needed for selected technique is assembled.

Element 2

Highlight hair using a weaving technique.

Performance criteria

    2.1 Highlighting products are measured and mixed in accordance with

    manufacturer's instructions.

    2.2 Highlighting aids are applied to the hair to produce confirmed outcome and

    minimum discomfort to the client.

    2.3 Highlighting products are applied to the hair to produce the confirmed outcome.

    2.4 Highlighting is completed within one hour.

    Range the completion of performance criteria 2.2 and 2.3 is included

    within the one hour timeframe.

    2.5 Highlighting products are monitored and processed in accordance with

    manufacturer's instructions and confirmed outcome.

    2.6 The highlighting aids and product residue are removed from the hair in

    accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

Element 3

Complete follow-up actions.

Performance criteria

3.1 Hair is prepared for following service.

    Range may include but is not limited to towel dried, combed, product

    applied.

    3.2 Home haircare advice provided is consistent with hair type and completed

    service.

    Range product type, maintenance advice.

    3.3 The record card is filled out in accordance with workplace requirements.

    Range client details, completed service, advice provided.

    3.4 Tools and equipment are sanitised in accordance with workplace requirements.

    3.5 The work area is cleaned and tidied in accordance with workplace requirements.

    Range work area shampoo area, styling station, dispensary.

Please note

    Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

    Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

    Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

    Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP).
