    Observe the learner

     Instructions

This template includes two types of checklists and variations on how to use them.

    1. Observe the learner

    2. Critical points.

1. Preparation

    Carefully read the:

; Evidence required (practical) in the Evidence Guide

    ; Elements and performance criteria

; Critical aspects in the Evidence guide

; AQF level of the training course, where relevant.

2. Choose the appropriate checklist.

Some observations need to be completed over a period of time and will cover a range of evidence and tasks. In this case checklist number one

    may be the most useful.

Other tasks can be observed following a defined process of key steps or stages. In this case checklist number two may be the most useful.

Rating scales may be of use in some observation situations. An alternative version of both checklists has been included. This should be deleted if not required.

3. Hints

; Limit the number of items/criteria in the checklist so that they can be reasonably observed in the time available. Ten items/criteria should be ample.

; Express criteria in terms of observable learner behaviour.

; Avoid ambiguous words like correct and good.

    ; Avoid long sentences.

; Use language that both the assessor and the learner can understand.
