Free Wireless Access for Mac Notebooks

Connecting to the Public Free Wireless Network

If AirPort is turned off, click the AirPort icon in the toolbar and turn it on. Choose hillcat from the

Network pop-up menu. After you’ve connected, start either Safari or Firefox.

You should see a notice that you’re being redirected to the web login page. When prompted, allow an applet from “caserver.rsu.edu” to access your computer. You will receive a notice that Safari can’t verify

the identity of the website “10.1.1.19.” You can safely continue. On the Authentication page, enter a Username of hillcat and a Password of hillcat and click Continue.

When prompted click the Download Cisco NAC Agent 4.7.1.506 button. Double-click the CCAAgent_MacOSX.tar file to extract the contents of the file. Double-click the extracted CCAAgent.pkg file to install the Clean Access Agent.

After installing the package, the Cisco Clean Access Agent will pop-up. Enter a User Name of hillcat with a Password of hillcat and then click the Login button.

The Clean Access Agent checks for the presence of antivirus software for Mac OS X. Four different programs are recognized, ClamXav, Computer Associate’s eTrust, McAfee’s Virus Scan, and Symantec’s

Norton AntiVirus for Mac. If no antivirus is found, or if definitions are out of date, you will receive an Assessment Report that indicates the MacOS X AV Definition Updates must be corrected. If you wish to install ClamXav, free antivirus software for Mac, then you have about 25 minutes to complete the process before the Clean Access Agent logs you out. If you’ve installed ClamXav and

updated the definitions but you still can’t login, then quit the Clean Access Agent and login again.

    ClamXav Installation Quick Start

Note: these instructions are for version 1.1.1. Snow Leopard users will have a newer version that doesn’t exactly match the instructions. However, it will still be possible to download and install the program following the general outline below.

; Download the ClamXav disk image from ClamXav.com. You can download version 1.1.1 from the

    mirror link.

; If you are running OS X 10.6 or you just want to run the latest version of ClamXav, you’ll need to

browse to www.net-security.org. Navigate to Software > Mac OS X. Under Categories, click the

Antivirus link. In the software titles section, click ClamXav 2.0.5 Beta link. On the ClamXav 2.0.5

Beta page, click the download link.

; When the download finishes, drag ClamXav.app from the disk image into your Applications

    folder (or wherever you like)

; Eject the ClamXav disk image

    ; Double click ClamXav.app

At this point, you may or may not be prompted to install or update the ClamAV scanning engine. If so,

click "Install" and follow the onscreen instructions. Once the installer has finished, double click ClamXav.app again

When you launch ClamXav, you'll be presented with the following window:

Make sure you're connected to the internet and click the "Update virus definitions" button on the main window. ClamXav will attempt to connect to the ClamAV website to download and install new virus definitions.

    ClamXav Scanning Quick Start

Click "Choose what to scan..." and choose a file, folder or a combination of files and folders by holding down the Command key. If you wish to scan multiple items in separate folders, click the view button

to change it to list view, press the disclosure triangle beside each folder you wish to open, and then hold the Command key as before whilst making your selection. To access hidden folders, type the forward slash character on your keyboard and then type the full path to your desired folder. Click the "Start Scan" button and wait for the results.

Alternatively, drag and drop a selection of files/folders onto the main ClamXav window, Finder icon or Dock icon and scanning will start immediately.

While ClamXav is scanning your selection, you'll see the name of each file fly past in the "Currently Checking" section of the main window.

Should any infected files be found, they'll appear in the "Report" region of the main window. What you do with them after that is entirely up to you!

You can stop a scan/update safely at any point.

Various settings and actions may be refined by altering the preferences.

    ClamXav Updating Quick Start

There are various preferences and settings which may be changed to suit your liking by clicking the "Preferences" button on the main window or choosing "Preferences..." from the ClamXav menu (beside the Apple menu).

In Internet Preferences, the "Check for new version of ClamXav/ClamAV engine" settings will check for

new updates each time you run ClamXav. Similarly, virus definitions can be updated automatically when you launch ClamXav.
