Franklinton and Bogalusa Branch Libraries – The Washington Parish Library is hosting a series
of free technology and soft skill training classes. The classes are especially useful for those seeking employment or who are interested in new career paths as well as people who want to improve their career skill set to earn a higher standard of living.
The technology training will cover leading business software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access and MS Project. Adobe applications cover Acrobat, In Design, Photoshop and Dreamweaver, which is the leading web site creation application. Training in QuickBooks is also available. In the area of soft skills, training will be offered in job search skills, career best practices, communication skills and basic computer skills.
The Washington Parish Library is able to offer these free classes through an $8.8 M federal stimulus grant awarded to the State Library of Louisiana by the Department of Commerce’s
National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s (NTIA) Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP), funded by the American Recover and Reinvestment Act. The grant supports projects that enhance and expand public computer centers, and encourage sustainable adoption of broadband service. The grant has enabled the State Library to fund its “Louisiana Libraries Connecting People to Their Potential” project, designed to expand broadband infrastructure and training throughout the entire state.
Of all the many issues facing the state, workforce development has been targeted as a key element in preventing economic growth and general well-being of Louisiana citizens. While there are many jobs available, the state does not have enough skilled workers to fill these jobs. The “Louisiana Libraries: Connecting People to their Potential” project will ensure that the state is in a position to recruit and train a strong workforce. With the BTOP grant, quality technology training will be available to help people acquire the job skills they need, particularly in areas where no training is otherwise available.
State Librarian, Rebecca Hamilton, says, “The State Library and our public libraries are committed to promoting a strong, well prepared Louisiana workforce. These classes are just one area that the “Louisiana Libraries: Connecting People to Their Potential” project will improve our citizen’s lives. Through this project, we have also been able to provide several invaluable
databases geared towards enhancing both our workforce and our educational opportunities. All of these resources are completely free of charge and we encourage everyone to explore what is available at http://lalibcon.state.lib.la.us/ and http://lajacc.state.lib.la.us/.”
Training will be provided by LANtec of Louisiana, LLC, a Microsoft Gold Certified Training Partner and Louisiana Convergence Services, Inc, training and consulting firm with experience in both soft skills and technology.
