Everything You Should Know Before You

    Begin.

; What are eBooks and eAudiobooks?

eBooks and eAudiobooks are digital copies of printed books and recorded audiobooks.

; Why would I want to check out digital copies of these items?

There are a number of reasons why but not all may necessarily apply to you.

Sometimes people prefer to read on their eReader (such as a Barnes & Noble Nook or

    a Sony eReader).

Another reason may be because you can keep track of multiple items all on one device.

Also, since items are checked in automatically, there are no fines.

; This all sounds great but how much does it cost to use this service?

The service is free provided you are a Fort Worth resident cardholder with a record in

good standing (No fines over $5.00, overdue materials, lost items, etc.).

; Alright, so what do I need to use this service?

You need an internet connection and a computer. If you want to transfer the items from

the computer to another device, you‟ll need to purchase the device and the applicable

items needed to connect it to the computer (assuming they‟re not provided with the

    device.).

    3

    OverDrive

The Fort Worth Library delivers its eBooks through the vendor OverDrive.

The website lists the services Fort Worth Library uses for distribution of digital content. Click on the OverDrive link to continue to the OverDrive service.

The first thing you need to do is look to the left at the two links labeled „OverDrive Media Console‟ and „Adobe Digital Editions.‟

window and choose which operating system (Windows or Mac. For mobile versions, please

refer to the „OverDrive Mobile‟ section of this guide) you‟re using.

Checking Out and Transferring eBooks on

    OverDrive

NOTE: If you will be using a Kindle, please refer to the section titled „Checking Out eBooks on OverDrive Using an Amazon Kindle.

To checkout using the OverDrive service, go to http://www.fortworthlibrary.org, click on the „Digital

Library‟ link located on the right-side of the page, and then click on the OverDrive link to access the OverDrive page.

Before you go any further, make sure you have Adobe Digital Editions installed. If you haven‟t downloaded and installed the program, please refer to the „What You‟ll Need to Use OverDrive‟ page of this manual.

To begin using OverDrive, click on the Search tab located at the top of the page. Fill in the blanks

button. with the appropriate information and then click the

NOTE: If you want either eBooks or eAudiobooks and not both, use the „Format‟ box to filter the search results so you get what you want. For example, click on the „Format‟ drop-down box and choose „Adobe EPUB eBook‟ so you only get

    eBooks and no eAudiobooks.

The page that loads after you click the button is your search results. On this page, you may click the item‟s title to view more information, or you may add the item to your cart or place a hold depending

on the availability of the item.

    6

The image above is an example of some search results. This page displays the basic information for each item as well as its format (eBook or eAudiobook).

You‟ll notice under the item called „Deceived‟ that there is a icon labeled „Place Digital Hold‟ and another icon labeled „Add to Digital Cart‟ for the item „Vortex.‟

If the icon for „Place Digital Hold‟ is displayed, it means all copies of that specific item are currently

checked out and you must wait until they expire on another patron‟s account before you may check it out on your own.

However, if the icon „Add to Digital Cart‟ is displayed, it means the item is available to check out.

To proceed, click on the link „Add to Digital Cart.‟

The page currently displayed at this point is a list of all items in your cart. You may either click on the link „Continue Browsing‟ to find more items to check out or you may click the link „Proceed to

    Checkout.‟

If you have not yet entered your library card number (You can at any point during this process by clicking the „Login‟ link at the top right of the page.), you will be prompted to do so now.

The next page will display the list of the items you wish to checkout. You‟ll notice under the title, a

drop down box labeled „Lending period‟ is shown. Click on the arrow to the right of the box and select the period you wish to have the item.

NOTE: Please see the FAQs section to see why you are able to choose your own lending period.

When you have selected your lending periods, click on the button to

    checkout your items.

Now, you may finally download your items. Click on the „Download‟ button located beneath the cover art of your item.

    7

When you click download, the following windows should appear:

NOTE: Depending on what operating system (e.g.; Windows Vista, 7, or Mac) you‟re using, these windows may look different from the ones below. However, the windows should have similar, if not the same, options.

Click ‘Open’ to download your book.

When the download is complete, a security warning might or might not open depending on what operating system you

are using. It is okay if this window does not open. If it doesn’t, proceed to the next step.

If it does open, click ‘Allow’ (or similarly worded button) then proceed to the next step.

    8

Adobe Digital Editions will open and download your eBook automatically.

If your eBook downloaded successfully, the book will open automatically. To return to your ‘Library,’ where you must go

to transfer eBooks to another device, click on the icon in the upper-left that looks like three book spines side-by-side.

    9

At this point, you’re ready to transfer to another device. To do so, move your mouse over the cover of your book, left-

click on the cover and hold down the mouse button, and then drag the cover over your device listed in the menu on the

    left.

That‟s it! Your eBook is transferred to your device. The only thing left is to open your eBook in whatever device you transferred it to and read!
