    Physics Assessment Task

Assessment Type: EEI, Extended experimental investigation Date given out:

Context: Medical Physics Date to be submitted:

    Student’s name: ___________________________________

The Task Investigate and devise a means by which you can measure the pressure exerted by moving fluids. You might start with an investigation of Bernoulli’s method (though not literally!).

Supporting Information:

This EEI is quite challenging in that you have to work out how you are going to measure of the

pressure and do so in such a way that it is quantifiable. You will clearly need to plan the task, that

    is:

; Brainstorm identify investigable aspects of the problem thus demonstrating an understanding

    of the relevant topics

; Develop a strategy suggest an approach to the problem which takes into account the

constraints of the laboratory and the limited time-line.

; Research or acquire information that this relevant to the investigation.

; Plan develop a procedure for the investigation; as well as develop a list of the equipment you

will need to perform the task.

; Implement perform the investigation, repeat measurements as appropriate and record all

    relevant data and observations.

; Write the report which will be a detailed version of a standard ‘laboratory report’.

Remember that the assessment of an EEI incorporates a consideration of how safety has been taken

    into account.

Conditions of Assessment:

; You will have five weeks to complete this research task.

; You may perform the research in groups of up to three but the report and findings must be

    individually presented.

; Class time will be allocated for the completion of the project.

; Resources available include: library access, internet access, physical resources from the science

department (though some will have to be shared at different times), minimal teacher advice.

; Student ownership will be monitored by the teacher regularly questioning individual students,

checking students’ journals and checking drafts.

Task Time-line:

For the various steps of the investigation as outlined above (develop a strategy, research, plan,

implement and write the report) you will be provided with supporting blank proformas which are

designed to aim you in the task and keep you focused. The time-line for the completion of these

    steps is as follows:

    ;

Expectations and Criteria for Assessment:

The primary guide for what is expected as an appropriate completion of this task is the EEI,

Extended experimental investigation criteria sheet that will be used in its evaluation.

The following additional points should also be noted:

; The criteria for assessment of an EEI are vary broad and must be checked regularly so

you know you are not doing yourself a disservice.

; You don’t have to get an EEI ‘right’ to do well in terms of its assessment. The most

important thing is that in the process of carrying out the investigation you have learnt a

range of physics skills and processes and that you have communicated such in the report.
