    Obtaining Usage Statistics

The Emerald Usage Statistics allows you to look at many different aspects of your library‟s/organisation‟s usage. It is possible to search for information regarding sessions, contents page hits, abstracts viewed, Full-Text Downloads (HTML & PDF) and Full-Text Turnaways (see event explanations, page 5). You can then narrow this down to “events per title” or “day of the

month”. You can perform these information look-ups for “all titles” or you can specify which title. This information is available regarding a specific month or a date range whereby, you select a

start and end month, and obtain data between these two.

This guide includes comprehensive instructions from how to login and request usage statistics for your organisation to using the drilldown facilities to expand the information available.

    Event Explanations

Below is an explanation of the different options available for Emerald‟s Usage Statistics.

User Sessions

This information refers to the number of sessions that your selected Emerald ID has received for your

chosen month(s). A session is a period of time during which a user will connect to Emerald database, until the time that they disconnect (i.e. shut down their browser) from Emerald.

TOCs Viewed

This information refers to the number of hits that Emerald “journal issue contents pages” experience. An

example of a journal issue contents page, for say, Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal would be http://www.emeraldinsight.com/Insight/viewContainer.do?containerType=Issue&containerId=23168

Abstracts Viewed

Whenever a user accesses an article‟s abstract but does not link to the Fulltext, this is counted as an “abstract hit”. An example of a journal‟s abstract page, for say, Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal would be http://www.emeraldinsight.com/10.1108/09513570510627685

FT Downloads

This is when a user accesses the full text of an article, this is then counted as an article page hit. Please

note that the full text article page can be viewed in: HTML or PDF these count towards a “Full-text

Download”. An example of a journal‟s article page, for say, Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal

    would be

    http://www.emeraldinsight.com/Insight/viewPDF.jsp?Filename=html/Output/Published/EmeraldFullTextArticl

e/Pdf/0590180601.pdf After having selected one of the formats for document delivery, this process would then add one to the “FT Downloads”.

FT Turnaways

Emerald can be accessed in one of two “main” ways. This is either through IP recognition or through

username/password entry. Once the user has been recognised by Emerald he/she is able to view the articles (etc.) to which they have subscribed. However, if a user does not have a subscription to a journal/article or is not logged in, but still tries to access the article they will get the following error message Emerald has not recognised you as a registered user, if you log in, you might get more results. this error

message counts as a “FT Turnaway”.
