    Step 1 lead in

     T: Good morning, everyone. As a student, we are busy with our study every day.

    However, sometimes, we will learn to relax ourselves. Then what do you

    usually do in your spare time?

     S1: I usually go to..

     S2: In my spare time, I always play baskeball with my classmates and..

     T: Very good. Do you like sports?

     Ss: Yes/No

     T: With the development of society, sports is becoming more and more popular,

    especially the Olympic Games is popular with all people. As we know, the 29th

    Olympic Games was held in Beijing, which was the great honour to our

    Chinese people. How much do you know about the Olympic Games? Today we

    are going to learn about THE OLYMPIC GAMES.

    Step 2 Warming up

     T: Since The Olympic Games is more and more popular, how much do you know

    about it? Now lets have a quiz to see who knows the most about the Olympic

    Games. The one who can answer the most and best can get a gift.

     Task 1 information about the Olympic Games

     T: There are many questions, are ready for answering them?

     Ss: Yes.

     T: Where did the ancient Olympic Games start?

     S3: In Greece

     T: How many countries competed in the ancient Olympic Games?

     S4: One (Greece)

     T: Who could not take part in the ancient Olympic Games?

     S5: Slaves and women.

     T: When and where did the modern Olympic Games start?

     Ss6: Athens in 1896.

     T: Who was the first gold medal winner and for what events?

     Ss7: Xu Haifeng for shooting.

     T: What was the three words that show the spirit of the Olympic Games?

     Ss8: Swfiter, higher and stronger.

     T: What do the five rings on the Olympic flag stand for?

     SsThe five continents.

     T: What are the official mascots for the Beijing Olympics?

     Ss: Five friedlies.

     T: What are they?

     Ss: They are Beibei, jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying and Nini.

     T: Great! Yes, They also stand for five different things. Beibeithe fish;

    Jingjing---the panda; Huanhuan---the Olympic flame; Yingying---the Tibetan

    antelope; Nini---the swallow. So they are formed Beijing Huanying Ni. If we

    use English, they show ―Welcome to Bejing!

     Task 2

     T: Very good. Thank you. Just now you did a very good job. Now I know most of

    you like sports and pay close attention to the Olympic Games. We know the

    29th Olympic Games was held in Beijing last year, when and where will the

    next Olympic Games be held?

    Ss: It will be held in London in 2012.

    T: Good. Since there are ancient and modern Olympic Games, Do you know any

    difference between the ancient and modern Olympic Games?

     Ss: In ancient Olympic Games, women and slaves were not allowedto take part

    in it, however, now……

     T: Good job! If you want to know more about them, now we will learn reading.

    From it we will learn more the difference between them.

    Task 1Reading aloud to the recording and finding the general idea

    T: Now please listen and read aloud to the recording of the text AN INTERVIEW. Pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation as well as the pauses within each sentence. Then try to get the general idea of the passage.

    The ancient Olympic Games began in Greece and were held from 776 B.C. to

    A.D.393. It was held every four years. At that time, there were not so many sports as today. And women were not allowed to take part in the games. There were not Winter Olympics at that time. Winners got the olive wreath as the prize. The motto was swifter, higher and stronger.

    The modern Olympic Games began in 1891. Theyre held every four years.

    There are many new sports in the Olympics. In the summer Olympics there are over 250 different sports. Women are not only allowed to join in but also play a very important role in it.

    T: Ok, now lets read it silently. First lets talk about the same points between the

    ancient and modern Olympics.

    The similarities

    ? Both are held every four years.

    ? Both are held not for money but for honour.

    ? The beliefs are the same. They are: Swifter, Higher, and stronger.

    ? Men are allowed to take part both in ancient and modern Olympics.

    ? Some events are the same, such as running, jumping, shooting and

    thowing.

    The Differences

    ? There were not winter Olympics in the past.

    ? Now competitors are from all over the world. But in the ancient time,

    only the people in Greece could take part.

    ? Only men were allowed to take part in the past, now woman are also

    allowed.

    ? In the past, winners got the olive wreath as the prize. Now competitors

    compete for medals.

    ? The events and athletes in modern time are more than those in the past.

    ? There is a special village for the competitors to live in, a stadium for

    competitions, a gymnasium for these who watch the games now. But there

    were not in the past.)

    Step 4 Discussion

    T: As we know, there is not only a competition for gold medals but also for the hosting of the Games in the Olympic Games.You know many government has tried its best to compete for hosting the Olympic Games. It has cost a lot of money but it is an honour. Do you think whether it is worthwhile? Why?

    used for other things.

    2. To many visitors may do harm to the environment of the city.

    3. The venues and buildings may be wasted after the Olympic Games.
