Remotely Connect to another computer ~~

In order to remotely connect to another computer you will need to know the IP address of the computer you want to connect to. To get the IP address from the machine you will want to connect to, go to Start/Run and type in “cmd” (without

the quotes) and hit Enter. In the window that opens, type in ipconfig (without

the quotes) and you will see your IP address in the format of 139.78.xxx.xxx. The last few numbers vary from machine to machine.

Write down the number in the IP address line for use next.

Next, on your office computer, go to Start and right-click on My Computer and select Properties.

Next, click on the Remote tab and the following window will open:

Next, select Allow users to connect remotely to this computer” and click OK.

To Access Your Office Computer from Your Home Computer:

Connect your laptop to your home Internet or wireless connection.

Ensure that you have made a successful connection using the OSU VPN client. IT requires that any off campus connection must be made using the OSU VPN client to ensure total security during your connection. Failure to do so will result in the inability to connect to the OSU network from home. If you do not have the VPN client currently installed on your computer please see the instructions for the installation of the VPN client. This can be found on our IT webpage that you downloaded this document from.

Go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/Communications and double click the Remote Desktop icon.

Enter the IP address you got from the computer you want to connect to and click once on the Connect button.

Once you click the Connect button, your screen will change and you will see the desktop of your work PC. Anything that you do while on your work PC, will be changed or saved there. To stay connected to your work machine and switch over to your laptop, just minimize the work desktop screen and you will see your laptop computer?s screen again. You can work back and forth between them. If you are traveling and have access to a wireless connection, you can connect back here to your office machine wirelessly as well.

Side note: The computer you want to connect to must be on in order to connect to it. So remember to only log off your office computer at night.
