    Groundwork Church View Community Gardens

    Activity

; Organiser: Sandie Vickers + vacant Deputy Team Leader

; Date of event: 27 May 2008 (all day event)

    ; In conjunction with: Groundwork

; Details: Three community gardens would be tidied up on the day, as well as painting

gates installed as a part of the Manchester alley gating project. This will be part of a

week long community project, working alongside local residents.

The Church View area of Harpurhey was highlighted for improvement, being one of

the most deprived neighbourhoods in the UK, through Manchester City Council‟s

    Housing Investment Framework.

The area has undergone many changes over the years including seeing vast areas

surrounding it demolished and then rebuilt. In more recent times, the area has sunk

into decline once more, with an upsurge in void properties and a more transient

    population.

In the 1970‟s some of the residents got together and with their own bear hands

transformed the open spaces behind some of the properties into community gardens.

Some of these residents still live in the area and were keen to see the area revamped

and establish a greater sense of community spirit.

Groundwork became involved in the consultation and design of three community

gardens and the open spaces. Through consultation, involvement in the design

process, garden training and excursions to manufacturers, the residents now have 3

community gardens which they are proud of. Although some residents have been

involved in the entire process they, and Groundwork, are keen to get even more

people actively engaged in the ownership / maintenance.

With this in mind it is hope that holding a „Paint Your Yard Gate„ day will encourage

more people to come out and meet each other and be the icing on the cake for this

project. This event will also prepare the gardens for a celebration event for the whole

area which is planned for June.

; Skills required: No experience necessary, although this event will require a degree of

    manual labour

    ; Numbers: 15-20 people

    ; Value Added: Yes

Groundwork Moston Brook Avenue Community Park

    Activity

; Organiser: Clare Goatman + Danielle Zeider

; Date of event: 10 June 2008 (all day event)

    ; In conjunction with: Groundwork

; Details: Single day. Team size @15-20 people.

Residents of Moston Bank Avenue made contact with Manchester City Council

Private Sector Housing to raise the issues of vandalism and antisocial behaviour on

their avenue. Residents were experiencing problems with gangs gathering on the

green space next to their properties, and several houses had been vandalised. Some

residents had been the victims of crime such as muggings, with the thieves entering

and leaving via the green space.

Private Sector Housing secured funding for Groundwork to work with the residents to

deliver a project that would prevent the problems. Residents were consulted through

questionnaires and design meetings, where they worked with a Landscape Architect

to design a solution. It was agreed that the area would be secured with fencing and a

gate and a community garden would be created. Residents had requested that the

garden be kept as natural as possible, to attract wildlife, but that it also provide a

seating area and more formal planting. Residents believe that the garden will help to

build community spirit. Many of the residents are elderly and the garden will provide

light exercise and a secure place close to their homes for them to socialise. The

residents plan to hold community events in the garden, which will include

    maintenance days.

In the original design residents wanted a natural path that would take them on a route

around the garden. However, due to budget constraints this had to be left out of the

scheme. The residents also secured their own funding through a Community CASH

grant to buy plants for the planting beds. Addleshaw Goddard Volunteers will be

creating this path and helping the residents to plant under the supervision of

experienced contractors. Volunteers will therefore be learning a new skill as well as

helping the local community to complete their garden.

; Skills required: No experience necessary, although this event will require a degree of

    manual labour

    ; Numbers: 15 20 people.
