    COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides the fundamentals of Endodontics, Periodontics, and Oral Surgery procedures with detailed instruction of the dental assistant’s role in each specialty area including instrumentation.

COURSE PREREQUISITE (S): Successful completion of DEA 111

RATIONALE:

    The changes in this course will enhance and up-date the material to assure that the dental assisting students will continue to receive a quality education and future employment as a dental assistant. This will also meet the requirements and guidelines of the College and for accreditation with the American Dental Association.

    COURSE OBJECTIVES:

    1. Describe the different procedures for Endodontics.

    2. Identify by name the instruments used for an Endodontic procedure.

    3. Describe the different procedures for Periodontics.

    4. Identify by name the instruments used for a Periodontic procedure.

    5. Describe the different procedures for Oral Surgery.

    6. Identify by name the instruments used for an Oral Surgery procedure.

    7. Write home care instructions for the above specialties.

UNIT OBJECTIVES:

Module I Endodontics

     Unit I Introduction to Endodontics

    Upon completion of this unit, the dental assisting student will be able to:

     1. Define endodontics

     2. Discuss briefly the history of endodontics

     3. List the eleven scopes of endodontics

     4. Name and describe the diagnostic tests used to determine the need for endodontic treatment

     5. List at least five pieces of information that would be recorded on the patient’s record from the diagnostic

     testing.

     6. List the instruments, equipment, and materials used during a diagnostic testing for possible endodontic

     treatment and vie the use(s) for each.

Unit II Pulp Protection

    Upon completion of this unit, the dental assisting student will be able to:

     1. Explain the difference between desensitization of dentin and pulp protection

     2. Identify the materials used in the protection of the pulp

     3. Identify by name the instruments used during pulp protection.

     4. List the information that would be recorded of what was done for the patient on the patient’s chart for

     pulp protection

     5. Explain the procedure and home care instructions to the patient

     6. Define pulp capping

     7. Name and describe the two (2) methods of pulp capping

     8. Identify the materials used with each method of pulp capping

     9. Identify by name the instruments used during a pulp capping

     10. List the information that would be recorded of what was done for the patient on the patient’s chart for a

     pulp capping.

     11. Explain the procedure and home care instructions to the patient

     12. Define pulpotomy

     13. Explain the purpose of using calcium hydroxide during a pulpotomy

     14. Identify the materials used during a pulpotomy

     15. Identify the instruments used during a pulpotomy

Unit III Pulpectomy and Bleaching

    Upon completion of this unit, the dental assisting student will be able to:

     2. Describe the different stages that a patient goes through when having a pulpectomy

     3. Name the two (2) popular irrigation solutions and explain what they do during a pulpectomy.

     4. Identify the materials used during a pulpectomy.

     5. Identify by name the instruments used during a pulpectomy.

     6. Record the information of what was done for the patient on the patient’s chart.

     7. Give home care instructions to a patient that has had a pulpectomy.

     8. Define Bleaching.

     9. Describe the procedure for beaching a tooth.

Unit IV Endodontic Surgery

    Upon completion of this unit, the dental assisting student will be able to:

     1. Describe the following procedures:

     a. Apical curettage

     b. Apicoectomy

     c. Retrofil

     d. Implantodontics

     e. Root amputation

     f. Hemisection

     2. Identify the materials used for each of the above procedures

     3. Identify the instruments used for each of the above procedures

     4. Give the home care instructions for the above procedures

Module II Periodontics

     Unit I Introduction to Periodontics

    Upon completion of this unit, the dental assisting student will be able to:

     1. Define Periodontics

     2. List the four (4) indications for periodontal treatment

     3. Name the four (4) contraindications for periodontal treatment

    Unit II Periodontal Diseases

    Upon completion of this unit, the dental assisting student will be able to:

     1. Give the two (2) major considerations in studying the development of periodontal disease

     2. List the six (6) most common local irritants and their possible mechanisms of actions on the

     soft gingival tissues

     3. Give the seven (7) systemic factors contributing to the progress of periodontal disease

     4. Name the five (5) dysfunctional factors contributing to the progress of periodontal disease

     5. Discuss the difference between systemic factors and dysfunctional factors

     6. Give the three (3) classifications of periodontal disease and categorize the stages

     7. List the four (4) classes of gingivitis

     8. Define periodontitis

     9. Explain the difference between gingivitis and periodontitis

     10. Explain a periodontal pocket

     11. Discuss a periodontal abscess

     Unit III Diagnosis

    Upon completion of this unit, the dental assisting student will be able to:

     1. Give the six (6) items done at the initial visit for a periodontal patient

     2. Discuss the purpose for each of the items listed in the objective #1

     3. Demonstrate proper periodontal charting

     Unit IV Surgical Procedures

    Upon completion of this unit, the dental assisting student will be able to:

     1. Define surpa-bony and infra-bony

     2. State the three (3) area of treatment of the periodontal pocket

     3. Explain the following periodontal procedures:

     a. Scaling, curettage, and root planning

     b. Gingivectomy

     c. Gingivoplasty

     d .Osteoplasty

     e. Periodontal flap and graft

     4. Identify by name the instruments used during the above surgical procedures

     5. Give the four (4) reasons for using a periodontal dressing over the site of periodontal surgery

     6. Write the post-operative instructions for the surgical procedures listed in objective #3

Module III Oral Surgery

     Unit I Introduction to Oral Surgery

    Upon completion of this unit, the dental assisting student will be able to:

     1. Define oral surgery

     2. Give a brief history of oral surgery

     3. Name the three (3) classifications for doing oral surgery

     4. List the eleven (11) indications for oral surgery

     5. Give the two (2) contraindications for oral surgery

     6. Explain the importance of a good medical history of a patient

     7. Discuss the instructions to be given to a patient having oral surgery with IV sedation

     8. Discuss the instructions to be given to a patient having oral surgery with general anesthesia

     9. List three (3) benefits to the patient by having oral surgery done in the hospital

     10. Discuss the admission of a dental patient to the hospital for oral surgery

     11. Discuss and demonstrate the ten (10) minute surgical scrub and gown of each member of

     Unit II Basic Surgical Procedures

    Upon completion of this unit, the dental assisting student will be able to:

     1. Describe the different types of incisions and drains

     2. Explain the different types of biopsies

     3. Describe the different types of tooth extractions

     4. Explain how a frenectomy is done

     5. Describe a dry socket

     6. Discuss the purpose of suturing

     7. Identify by name the instruments used during the above procedures

     8. Give post-operative instructions for the above procedures to a patient

     Unit III Complex Surgical Procedures

    Upon completion of this unit, the dental assisting student will be able to:

     1. Describe the procedure for removal of an impacted tooth

     2. Explain how a root tip is removed

     3. Discuss the procedure for repairing a broken jaw

     4. Describe the following terms:

     a. Pericoronitis

     b. Alveoloplasty

     c. Alveolectomy

     d. Throat pack

     e. Sinus perforation

     5. Identify by name the instruments used during the above surgical procedures

     6. Give post-operative instructions for the above surgical procedures to a patient
