    Freshman Survival Guide

Welcome to the University of Michigan!

As you are making the final preparations for your move over to Ann Arbor, I’m sure that you will encounter many problems, like how to get around, where to stay and even where to shop for your essentials upon reaching the university town of Ann Arbor. To smoothen out such difficulties, the UMSSA Freshmen Welcome Program has compiled the following Freshman Survival Guide for incoming freshmen. This guide complements the Freshman Survival Checklist and should greatly facilitate your move to Ann Arbor.

However, should you still have any questions, please feel free to contact our manpower committee member, Christine at the following email: chrisiew@umich.edu

1. Transport Information

1.1 Airport Information

Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW, aka Metro-Wayne County) is the closest airport servicing all major airline carriers domestically and internationally. It is located approximately 25 miles east of Ann Arbor.

Taxis, shuttles, and rental car agencies are available. All forms of transportation accept cash or credit cards. Driving time to Ann Arbor from the Detroit Metro Airport is approximately 30-40 minutes.

    1.2 Taxi Information

The most common way of getting from the airport to the University is by taxi. The following table shows the most updated costs for a trip from the airport to Ann Arbor. Taxi Companies:

Ann Arbor Metro provides door-to-door cab service and shuttle service to and from the DTW airport from Ann Arbor.

    Contact Information: (734) 507-9220.

Cost for the cab service: $30 plus tip one way.

Cost for the shared shuttle service (small van): $20 plus tip one way.

Independent Taxi Service also provides both cab service and shuttle service to and from

the DTW airport from Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti areas. Contact Information: (734) 485-5555.

Cost for cab service: $35 one way.

Cost for a shared ride: $20 one way.

Custom Transit provides transportation between the airport and Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti

    areas.

    VIP Transportation (734) 623-2996

The above phone numbers will also be very useful in getting around Ann Arbor. Unlike in Singapore, it is uncommon to see taxis plying the streets of Ann Arbor. Instead, the usual practice is to call for a cab when you really need one. These cabs could take as long as half an hour to one hour to arrive.

If you do not wish to call up the taxi companies before your arrival at the Airport, you can flag a taxi outside the airport after collecting your luggage. This will cost approximately US $ 50.
