Lesson Plan: Mosaic Tiles

Concept: To gain a better understanding of patterns and relate patterns to the

native culture.

Activity: Student will create their own mosaic tiles and explain their pattern to

the class.

Questions: Patterns are part of everyday, what patterns can you think of?

What number patterns can you think of?

Could these patterns be incorporated into your mosaic tile?

Materials: About a 4” by 4” wooden square for each student

Mosaic tiles

Glue

Prerequisite skills: Understanding of the variety of patterns

Suggestions: It helps to have the students trace their wooden square on a piece of

paper and create their design in the square. The students can then

glue on their pattern row by row.

Procedure: Give each student a wooden square and a baggy full of mosaic tiles.

The students will design their own pattern. Have the students glue

their mosaic tiles on their wooden square. When finished, the

students should write a two page report on patterns that are part of

their everyday life and explain their pattern of their mosaic tile. Discussion: It is good to discuss the variety of patterns, from numbers to daily

routines.

Follow-Up Activities: Have the students make a beaded design on leather, make bracelets or

necklaces, and move onto mathematical patterns.

Assessment Plan: Give the students a picture of a pattern from their culture have the

students explain it in one paragraph. Show the students a power

point of various patterns. The students will then pick a picture and

write one or two paragraphs about the pattern. The writing sample

should also include one paragraph about where else patterns show-up

in their culture and daily lives. (The power point is included at the

end.)

Additional Activities: Have the students make paper quilts. Also see additional worksheet
