    Cultural Anthropology: Culture, Then and Now

    The purpose of this assignment is to show students how social change can effect and bring about change in a culture’s

    heritage and practices. The purpose is to let students be culturally relative when examining a culture different from their

    own. This assignment will also sharpen students’ critical thinking and writing skills.

    In a partnership, you will:

     Pick a culture that is different from your own and of interest to you, from the list below:

    List of cultures to choose from:

The Report

     Identify and research one (1) cultural practice that has significantly changed over time within the culture of

    your choice.

    o Essentially, you are going to examine how your chosen cultural practice existed in the past (the ‘Then’)

    and show how it is currently depicted in society today (the ‘Now’).

    o Note: Research must consist of at least (3) secondary resources: book, academic journal, newspaper

    article, documentary, motion picture, or any other scholarly piece of writing

     With your partner, you will:

    o Describe your initial impressions of the culture and identify a stereotype(s) that is associated with the

    culture/and or cultural practice

    o Generate a list of questions written from the perspective of a cultural anthropologist that will help you

    focus your research and will allow you to discover why the cultural practice has changed over time.

     You will then compile your findings in a 2-3 page summary report; minimum 450 words in length. (Typed,

    double spaced, Times New Roman, 12 font)

The Presentation

     Present your findings with the use of technology/visual enhancements.

     You may choose to organize your presentation using one or more of the following, but are not limited to these

    suggestions:

    o PowerPoint o Video clips/Youtube clips

    o prezi.com o Graphic poster

     Please come up with one question for discussion

    (a) The Report Guidelines The following headings should be used when you are compiling your research:

    ; Culture Studied: Clear and concise introduction of the culture studied.

    ; Ancient Cultural Practice/Ritual/Tradition: Describe the cultural practice chosen (focus on 1)

    ; Initial Thoughts/Impressions: What were your opinions about the culture prior to research? Stereotypes?

    ; Focus Questions: Written from the perspective of a Cultural Anthropologist

    ; Past State of the Cultural Practice Current State of the Cultural Practice: Present the information you found

    during your research. How has the cultural practice changed over time?

    ; Conclusion: Clear and concise conclusion. Demystify any stereotypes associated with the culture/cultural practice

    based on findings and research. State how your opinions about the culture have changed.

    (b) The Presentation Present information collected in a creative manner

    ; Utilize media/visuals to enhance the overall effectiveness of the presentation

    ; The presentation should not exceed 10-12 minutes in length
