    Call for Papers

    ILAC International Conference 2012

Cultural and Linguistic Diversity in ASEAN”

    August 22-23, 2012

Raktakanishta Hall, Suan Dusit Rajabhat University,

    Bangkok, Thailand

Background and rationale

Since 2005, the Institute of Language, Art and Culture at Suan Dusit Rajabhat University (ILAC) has held an annual seminar on different topics related to Thai arts and culture. Last year ILAC held its first ILAC International Conference in celebration of the establishment of the ASEAN Community in 2015. To continue our focus on the creation of the ASEAN community, ILAC, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and the Embassies of ASEAN countries, will ndhold the 2 ILAC International Conference in 2012. The conference will focus on the cultural and linguistic diversity of all ten ASEAN countries which include the Federation of Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, the Kingdom of Cambodia, the Kingdom of Thailand, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, the Republic of Indonesia, the Republic of Singapore, the Republic of the Philippines, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Union of Myanmar.

These ten independent nations have multi-ethnic, multi-religious, multi-lingual and multi-cultural backgrounds which provide for immense cultural diversity. In order to prepare for a strong ASEAN community, it is necessary for member countries to understand each other’s cultures and languages. Furthermore it is important for ASEAN countries to recognize the role the English language plays in the development of this community. This conference will serve as a platform for researchers, educators and participants to learn and exchange cultural and linguistic knowledge on selected topics of interest. This conference will highlight the cultural aspects of ASEAN cuisine, performing arts, handicrafts, and alternative medicine. Linguistically, particular attention will be paid to the breadth of ASEAN languages as well as English language learning and teaching methods in the region. These topics reflect the splendid ethnic heritage and diversity of the ASEAN region, and how this vast richness can be preserved and shared with the outside world.

The Institute of Language, Art and Culture at Suan Dusit Rajabhat University is pleased to invite researchers and educators from all over the world to contribute their knowledge and wisdom with regards to the ASEAN region. The contributions can include research activities, case studies or best practices which help to inspire interest in the theory and practice of culture and language in ASEAN countries.
