Marking Criteria

    Academic Essay Marking Information

During the process of writing this essay you should be able to demonstrate the following Can Do statements: 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19

There are three assessment stages for the Academic Essay:

    1. Sentence outline: 5%

    2. Draft paper, which must be a minimum of 700 words: 5%

The 5 % will be awarded for completing the following:

; 1% for following the writing guidelines checklist

; 1% for naming the referencing system used (see InfoSuss for further information)

    ; 1% for including a bibliography

; 2% for attaching a Turnitin similarity report

These marks can only be awarded at this stage. They will contribute to your final grade. No half marks can be awarded.

Your tutor will provide formative feedback on:

; Your use of literature to support argument

    ; Your language use

This feedback should then be used to improve your final draft.

    3. Final paper and self-evaluation: 90%

For each stage of the assessment you will need to print a cover sheet from the Study Direct site and submit this with your work. The following sample coversheets are annotated for further clarification.

    Academic Essay Submission

Students must submit two copies of their essays to the school office (A70) before 16h00 on thWednesday the 7 of September. The draft essay and feedback must also be re-submitted with one copy of the paper. The office closes at 17h00.

Students will use their ID cards to scan the time at which they submit their essays. Students must include their tutor name and their ID number on their essay front cover. The main tutor, who also marked the draft, will mark the essay for the academic practice mark. The second marker will provide the grammar mark based on two pages of the essay. They will also sample mark three papers for academic practice. The second copy of the paper will be returned to the main tutor to be used when giving feedback. Once double-marked scripts have been verified, the marks can be entered onto Sussex Direct. The main tutors will enter both the language accuracy and the academic practice marks. One copy of the essay will be returned to the school office at the end of the course and the second copy, and draft essay, can be returned to the student.
