How do People in My Hometown Celebrate the Spring Festival?

The Spring Festival is the most important traditional festival for all Chinese people.

thGenerally speaking, the Spring Festival starts every year in the early days of 12 lunar month and

lasts till the middle of the first lunar month of next year. In the following paragraphs, I’ll describe

the way of the Spring Festivals celebration in my hometown.

First, people clean everything in their house completely, such as doors, windows, walls, sheets and so on. And they may change the old things into new ones, which will let the house take on an entirely new look. Then, men buy things needed for the coming New Year, such as couplets and fireworks while women prepare food for the New Year.

On the day of the New Years Eve, people decorate their clean house, which will surely

feature an atmosphere of festivity. All doors will be pasted with the Spring Festival couplets, usually expressing the wishes for a bright future for the New Year and getting rid of evil spirits. And as we all know, the Chinese character "fu", meaning blessing or happiness, is a must. The character put on paper can be pasted normally or upside down, for the "reversed fu" represents "fu comes" in Chinese.

People attach great importance to the New Years Eve. At that time, all family members get

together and have dinner that is more luxurious than usual. Dishes, including chicken, fish, pork and so on, convey the beautiful dreams of abundance and richness of the New Year. After dinner, parents and grandparents give children lucky money in red envelop as the New Years gift because

its believed that lucky money can bring good luck and ward off monsters. Then people burn the fireworks to drive away evil spirits, but such an activity is forbidden in big cities concerning the security and pollution. Next, people sit together, chatting, playing cards or watching TV. In recent years, the Spring Festival Gala broadcast on China Central Television Station (CCTV) is essential entertainment for the Chinese both at home and abroad. Everyone stays up to see the New Year in.

On the first day of the New Year, everybody dresses up and extends greetings to their families. Then, people eat dumplings for breakfast, hoping that everything goes well in the New Year. In the following days, they will visit their relatives and friends to send regards to each other. Of course, there are a lot of activities held during the Spring Festival. People can go to take part in them or just stay at home as they like.

The way of the Spring Festivals celebration is changing along with the development of

society, but the Spring Festival is still the most important festival in China.
