About SEO

    The Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO) Scholars Program is an academic enrichment program that enables motivated New York City public high school students of color to earn admission to and succeed at the nation’s most selective colleges and universities.

    The SEO Scholars Program offers students inclusion in an out-of-school enrichment program that combines a rigorous and challenging four-year academic curriculum with leadership training initiatives and a high level of individualized support. The Scholars Program academic curriculum includes critical reading, critical writing, vocabulary, grammar, math, debate, entrepreneurship, and test prep. SEO provides personalized college guidance thservices, assisting 12 grade students with their college application essays and scholarship applications. Through SEO summer Enrichment Programs (academic, business internship, travel abroad and outdoor adventure programs) students develop leadership skills, career awareness, and academic success skills.

Admission to SEO th.Students generally enter the SEO Scholars Program in the 9grade. We are looking for:

     Students exhibiting leadership potential, academic excellence and exceptional motivation.

     Students demonstrating an interest in attending college and a high motivation to improve academic

    performance.

     Parent/Guardian displaying strong support of student’s college ambition.

     Student and Parent/Guardian placing a high priority on consistent work with SEO and overall towards the

    goal of college.

     Students able to attend SEO programming 3 Saturdays a month and attend after school sessions at least

    once per week.

    1. Discuss a situation where you had to make a difficult choice. Please describe the possible choices and the pros and cons of each choice. You can write about an ethical dilemma if you choose.

    2. Discuss an issue that is important to you. Explain why. Give specific details.

    Directions: Please choose one of the following topics and write a four paragraph essay neatly on the lines below or you may attach a typed copy. Select a side to argue and include specific evidence (details) from your reading, studies, experience, and observations to support your argument. Your essay will be assessed in terms of its organization, development, and grammar.

1. This year’s presidential election is historic. The country will elect either its first African American president or first

    female vice president. Many Americans will elect our next president based on either his experience or the originality of his ideas. Which is more important when selecting a president: experience or new ideas?

    2. Is it necessary for the books we read in school to explore a shared cultural experience: why or why not? Describe the pros and cons of each side of the argument.
