    SPRING FLING WELCOME

Welcome to the 2009 Little Wonders Spring Fling and Auction!

I know that you will enjoy this evening’s food, fun and the fabulous finds on the auction tables! On behalf of

the Board of Directors, I would like to thank you for attending and supporting the school tonight. The Spring

Fling is our most important fundraising event of the year, representing an important portion of the school’s

operating budget. The monies raised from your bids this evening go directly to maintaining our beautiful

facility, continuing the unique programs and services Little Wonders offers and retaining our incredible

teachers all while helping keep our tuition low.

Last year we introduced a very successful “Fund-a-Need” program at the auction, which gives you the opportunity to make donations directly towards the purchase of special items for the school, like a new CD

player for the classroom or a “Tot Tree” for the yard! This year, we’ve added the opportunity to make a

donation to our Wonderwork Fund and help maintain the scholarships that we offer to families who may not

otherwise be able to participate at Little Wonders. We hope everyone will take a look at the “Fund-a-Need”

section and find something they would like to support.

An evening like this is clearly the result of a lot of hard work by the many parents on the Auction,

Contributions and Spring Fling Committees. In particular, I would like to thank Cheryl Enright and Lori

Jabagchourian, our Spring Fling Co-Chairs, for their tremendous efforts in organizing this event. Special

thanks also go to our Auction Chair, Holly Trollman, and our Contributions Co-Chairs, Cheryl Hagedorn,

Ting Lee and Meg McLaughlin, for the hours and hours they spent making sure that our auction is a

    success.

We also need to express our gratitude to all of the donors and event sponsors, many of whom are Little

Wonders parents, alumni and friends. There would be no Spring Fling without your generosity!

Thank you all again for joining together this evening to help support our school. Enjoy and good luck!

Cheers,

Stacey Klausner

    LITTLE WONDERS

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

    HONORARY SERVICE AWARD

The Honorary Service Award was established in 1995 to recognize those exceptional individuals who

exemplify the spirit of service that Little Wonders values so highly. This year we were very fortunate to

have ten nominees for the Service Award. The ten women who were nominated this year - Paige Bacon,

Jessica Campbell, Mei Chen, Lori Jabagchourian, Heidi Schell, Karen Senffner, Janet Tierney, Holly

Trollman, Kathy Tofigh, and Katharine Wilson all exemplify the spirit of the award by doing a tremendous

amount for our school and for the greater community. Congratulations!

Paige Bacon

Paige attends Little Wonders with her daughter, Caroline, and is expecting another little girl in May. After having been

an incredible class liaison in her first year at the school, she joined the Little Wonders Board as VP Liaison this year.

In addition to her regular responsibilities in that position, she has also served as the class liaison for the Thursday PM

class. Paige has put in countless hours helping expand our existing relationship with First Step for Families at Shelter

Network, moving it from one of financial and Christmas-time support, to helping provide an integral part of their

program through the new Parent Education Series. She was also instrumental in coordinating the remodel of the

children’s room at Shelter Network that was made possible by the Wonderwork community outreach fund and the

generosity of our parents. Currently, Paige also serves on the auxiliary committee for PARCA, raising money and

awareness for developmentally disabled children and adults on the Peninsula. She is an active member of the

Burlingame Mothers’ Club, having previously served on their Board as a Membership Chair. She and her husband also

volunteer at Shelter Network, donating food and helping with Spring Cleaning and other projects.

Jessica Campbell

This is Jessica’s second year as a parent at Little Wonders. She and her daughter, Sierra, are currently in the Monday

PM Class, where Jessica serves marvelously as the class liaison. She has also contributed articles for WonderWords.

Jessica has been recognized for being an incredible co-oping parent, always ready to help solve conflicts in the

classroom, and a real leader for the class. She is the first to brainstorm ideas, and she deftly manages class projects and

gifts. In addition, Jessica works full time as a Group Fitness Director for Reach Fitness. She teaches all kinds of dance,

yoga and creative movement classes for adults and children alike. Using her background in dance, Jessica also works

with the non-profit organization Leap…imagination in learning, as part of their visiting artist in residence program,

serving to enrich creative arts education at elementary and middle schools throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

    5

Mei Chen

Mei has been at Little Wonders for five straight years with her two children first, her daughter Avery and now, her

son Henry and, she is expecting her third child this spring. She currently is serving her second term as the Treasurer

on the Little Wonders Board of Directors, and has provided excellent guidance, leadership and prudence in managing

the schools budget and forecasting for next year. This is the fourth consecutive year that Mei has been nominated for

the Honorary Service Award. This year, Mei has continued to go above and beyond the scope of her job, organizing

and creating a file of key documents and information for quick access in the Director’s office, creating and conducting

parent surveys, and helping to make sure that all aspects of the Tot Spot pilot program were examined throughout the

course of the year. She has been critical in making sure that all of the school’s financial, legal and insurance

requirements are met. In addition to being a pleasure to work with on the Board, and an incredible co-oping parent in

the classroom, Mei shares her skills in a variety of other volunteer efforts. For the past five years, Mei has been a

member of the Board at Juma Ventures, a non-profit organization that provides work opportunities and training

programs to low-income, at-risk youth in San Francisco, and is currently serving as their Board Chair. She has also

been the treasurer for her undergraduate class at Wellesley for the past five years, a term that will end this summer

when new officers are elected at her 15 year reunion. Additionally, Mei is active in the Burlingame Mother’s Club,

through her playgroup (which continues to meet after five years) and In-A-Pinch meals.

Lori Jabagchourian

This is Lori’s second year at Little Wonders with her son, Aram. After having been a member of the Spring Fling

Committee last year, she stepped up to serve as one of the Co-Chairs of the event this year and has been wonderful in

that role. Lori ran a half-marathon for Team in Training and raised $7,000 to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma

Society (far surpassing the $3,000 goal set for her.) She volunteers to prepare and serve lunch for the senior citizens of

the Armenian Relief Society in San Francisco, and is a Committee Member of the KVZ Armenian School Alumni

Association. Lori is also active in the Burlingame Mother’s Club. She founded the Social Club, a sub-club to promote

information, support, friendship and community to mothers along the peninsula. Lori volunteers for the In-A-Pinch

program, delivering meals to new and expecting families. She has successfully worked with the BMC to extend this

service to families with hospitalized children, such as Magglio Boscarino. Lori also helps raise funds for Magglio, a

one and a half year old boy living with Pompe disease (a rare neuromuscular genetic disorder). Lori attends Little

Hands in Belmont with Aram and she is passionate about being an active member in her community.

Heidi Schell

Heidi is in her second year at Little Wonders with her daughter, Daryn. This year, she joined the Board of Directors as

the Development Chair, responsible for all of our fundraising activities. Heidi has brought incredible conscientiousness

to all the details of this position, and has done a wonderful job overseeing her committees. She has also been

recognized for being a great help to other parents in her class. Outside of Little Wonders, Heidi conducts bird surveys

once a month at Edgewood County Park on behalf of San Mateo County Parks to monitor overall resident and

migrating bird populations. She is currently serving on the steering committee of the San Mateo County Parks

Foundation to help plan this year’s Tour de Peninsula fundraising bike ride, and is also serving as the alumni chair for

San Francisco University High School’s Capital Campaign. If Heidi looks familiar to you, you may be recognizing her

from her “Aha Moment” Mutual of Omaha television ad. She donated the proceeds of that appearance to fund

scholarships for several girls at Hekima Place, a Kenyan boarding school that provides a stable home and the

opportunity to receive an elementary and secondary education for girls who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS.

Karen Senffner

Karen and her daughter, Sylvie, have been at Little Wonders for two years. After serving as the Events Assistant last

year, she stepped up to join the Board of Directors as Events Chair and has overseen her many committees with

characteristic grace and thoughtfulness. All of our regular events this year have been well organized and streamlined,

not to mention, a whole lot of fun! However, rather than rest on a job well done, she arranged for an additional special

event for our community a family yoga class at Nandi Yoga. Not only was a good time had by all, but the proceeds were donated back to the school. In addition, Karen and her husband maintain an ongoing relationship with the Esalen

Institute in Big Sur (a retreat center renown for alternative and experiential education) where she has taught, worked

and studied. She also works part-time as a home health physical therapist, and teaches courses in Zero Balancing,

which is a hands-on method of body energy and structure alignment. Her joy and enthusiasm in her work are a true

    testament to following your passions.

    6

Janet Tierney

Janet has been a parent at Little Wonders for three years, with her daughters Melanie and Lillian. In that time she has

served on the Contributions Committee, the Halloween Party and, this year, as the VP Liaison Assistant. She will

return next year as the VP Liaison on the Board of Directors. Janet has been very active as part of the Outreach

Committee this year, helping with the Shelter Network Holiday Giving program, set-up of the new Family

Connections’ site in Redwood City and the book drive to benefit Family Connections. Most notably, she has been

instrumental in organizing the new initiative sponsored by Little Wonders through the Wonderwork fund a Parent

Education Speaker Series at Shelter Network, which provides the parents at the First Step for Families with the kind of

resources and information we are so fortunate to receive as part of the curriculum here at school. Janet has recruited

speakers and educators to make the presentations, assisted with curriculum, arranged for childcare providers during the

sessions (as well as providing childcare herself) and been involved in every aspect of the program from set-up to clean-

up, and all points in between.

Holly Trollman

Holly has two children, daughter Stella and son Nathaniel. This is Holly’s third year at Little Wonders, and her second

straight year of serving as the Co-Chair for the Auction. In fact, she has had to step up as the sole Auction Chair this

year, when her Co-Chair moved away shortly after the beginning of the year. This has meant not only extra work for

her, but a real reshaping of the way the entire Auction Committee worked. It was a challenge that Holly has met with

grace, good spirit and success. She has also been working with the team to implement the use of specialized auction

software for the first time at Little Wonders, something that will help streamline the processes of our key fundraiser in

coming years. In addition to working part-time managing the office of her husband’s landscape construction business,

Holly also served this year on the Auction Committee at her daughter’s preschool, UMC Co-Op Nursery School in Burlingame. She is also a member of the Burlingame Mother’s Club.

Kathy Tofigh

Kathy has three sons, oldest James and twins, Jason and Luke. This is her fourth year at Little Wonders, and she has

previously served on the Board of Directors as Jobs Chair and, most recently, as President. This year, Kathy is serving

as one of the Director’s Assistants, providing invaluable help and perspective on a variety of projects. As a key part of

her position this year, Kathy was instrumental in organizing the evening with Denise Pope speaking about avoiding

stress and over-scheduling our children, which Little Wonders co-sponsored with Saint Paul’s Nursery School in

February. This event was an extraordinary first collaboration for the two schools, rivaling events put on by much larger

groups, and was such a great success that the partnership will continue to bring major speakers in to present for our

parents and the greater community. In addition to all she has done for Little Wonders, Kathy also serves on the Board

of Directors of Saint Paul’s Nursery School and is an active member of the Burlingame Mother’s Club.

Katharine Wilson thKatharine Wilson has attended Little Wonders for the past two years with her son, Henry. On April 6, she welcomed

another future Little Wonder, her daughter, Eleanor. This year, Katharine has been recognized as an extraordinary

class liaison for the Tuesday PM class. She is knowledgeable and dedicated to creating a cohesive community for the

parents, as well as being an exemplary co-op participant and a real pleasure to have in the classroom. Katharine

previously served on the school’s Auction Committee. In addition to her time at Little Wonders, Katharine currently

serves on the Board of the Burlingame Mother’s Club as one of the Outing Committee Coordinators. She is also a

provisional member of the Hillsborough Auxiliary to the Family Service Agency of San Mateo County, which is a

group of women dedicated to supporting Family Service’s mission of changing the lives of families in need, through

    fund raising and volunteer efforts.
