    Abstract: This article is mainly about a new teaching pattern, group cooperation in English study. It deals with the operating process of group cooperation in English study, the content and the method of group cooperative study, as well as describing and analyzing the positive sense of group cooperative study. It explains the effective group cooperative study, which not only enlarge the quantity of the students’ language practicing, improve their ability of language application, but also may raise the enthusiasm with which the students study independently and the ability cooperating with other people.

    The Elementary education Curriculum Reformed the Summary (Implementation) proposes to transform the students’ study way. It points out that to reform the students’ study way is the current key point to improve the educational quality in schools, especially emphasizes the independent cooperative and inquiring study way. such aspects in schools as taking the teacher for the center, taking the classroom for the center and taking the text book for the center should be changed into promoting the students to study on their own and promoting their independent development.

    However, there is a common phenomenon in English teaching in the

     [1]junior middle schools. That’s most English teachers in junior middle

    school are used to teaching such knowledge as grammar, vocabulary, sentence patterns and so on, but they usually neglect the students’ ability educating. Under this kind of situation, the students become the classroom-supporting role; at the same time it’s also difficult to achieve the basic goal in language teaching. Therefore, reforming the classroom instruction method and enhancing the teaching effect are my permanent objective. When I was a freshman in this college, I did some part-time work outside. I used to work as an English teacher in a private school. All my students were in Grade One. Every weekend they went to the private school to study English. At that time, I tried to introduce the method of group cooperative study to my class, which changed the former relations between the teacher and the students, renewed the teaching pattern, transferred the enthusiasm of the students to study English, drove the sense of participation of the students and their cooperative ability, and gave the students more chances to communicate with each other in order to make favorable human relations among all the students. After more than one year’s attempting, I have received a good teaching effect.

1. The operation of group cooperative study

    1.1 Reasonable grouping

    Mix and divide the students into several groups, according to their knowledge structure, ability level, individuality, sex, and even family

    background. There are four students in each group. Let each group have similar academic attainments. And let them have the similar competitive power.

    1.2 Division of labor cooperation

    In each group set up a group leader, a record operator, and a file clerk, a spokesperson, and so on. Every duty only needs one person. For example, the group leader is responsible for recording the organizing and developing the activities of group cooperative learning, the file clerk is responsible for collecting the opinions and the viewpoints of its group members, the spokesperson of the group is responsible for representing the group to report the achievement about the activities in group cooperative study.

    1.3 Planning work

    The content of the group cooperative study must be attractive and feasible. The question must be open. Preparing for this activity, the teacher should be clear about the aims and the demands of grouping activities. The teacher should plan the form, the content, the time, and so on. She or he

     [2]should prepare the tools and the materials for the grouping activities.

    Before the class, the teacher should give the task to each group; let them do some preparations for group cooperative study.

    1.4 Implementations

    The process of group cooperative study is from the individual

    independent thinking to group cooperative study and finally information exchange with other groups. In other words, each member should think independently to develop profound and original thinking during the period of thinking independently. Using the mode of group cooperative study, each member should communicate with other members about his own independent thinking. After the group exchanges, each group generalizes and summarizes its information. Than the spokesperson reports it to the whole class. Finally all the groups carry on the exchange and the appraisal under the teacher’s instruction. When the students carry on group cooperative study, the teacher is not a extraneous person and a observer, but she or he should be the mentor and the promoter to all the students who are doing group cooperative study. Sometimes the teacher should be a participant studying with the students. Before developing group cooperative study, the teacher must carry on necessary knowledge counseling and skill training to the students. Next, during the process of group cooperative study, the teacher must carefully observe the study situation of each member in each group, find the existent problems in a good time, and take certain regulative measures. Certainly, the entire class doesn’t need to use the group cooperative study all the time; it may be carried on according to the content of the course.

    1.5 Appraisals

    To appraise the group cooperative study firstly should connect study

    process appraisal with study result appraisal, connect group collective appraisal with individual appraisal. Make each member realize that cooperative group is a study community, the realization of individual goal must depend on the realization of collective goal, train the student to have the spirit of cooperation and unity as well as the ability of cooperative study. While appraising the group, the teacher should also appraise the individual study participating percentage in groups cooperative study of the students, appraise the enthusiasm, the original ideas of the students, too. In this way, a good example could be set up for the groups stimulating the competition in the groups, arousing the enthusiasm of every students and dispelling the individual student’s dependent mentality.

    1.6 Using competitive system appropriately

    The competition is always regarded as one of the methods to stimulate students’ fighting spirit. During the competitive process, students’ study interests would be promoted and their abilities of overcoming difficulties would also be enhanced a lot. In a competitive situation, students may study more effectively. Therefore, unifying the competitive system and the group cooperative study will be able to display the effectiveness of group cooperative study fully.

    There are many kinds of forms in group’s competition. Such as the dragon competition, the oral reading competition, the question vies to answer first, the dialogue performance competition, the role playing

    competition, English calligraphy competition and so on. These competitions can form cohesion among the group’s members, in which everybody works hard as one for the group’s honor. It’s a good way for promoting the group spirit and the cooperative realization. These competitive activities are also in favor of developing the group cooperative study. How do we appraise a group’s work? The concrete operation is to make an inspection form first. Then check the group’s study effect from the work. To formulate a concrete inspecting standard to each inspecting content. Take the students’ work as an example. If the work of the whole group’s members get the score “A”, the student who is in charge of the inspecting form should draw a five points star in one blank on the inspecting form. Moreover, take the test as an example. If each member of the group has made a progress comparing with last test or if the average score of the group’s members is above 80 points, they can also get a five points star. Make a comparison in every month, the group that has more five points stars, is the superior group. Of course, the teacher should give certain reward to the superior group.

2. The content of group cooperative study

    2.1 Preparation for the “free talk” by cooperating

    There is usually several minutes to do “free talk” after class begins. It’s a common form of classroom teaching. When I was studying in junior

    middle school, my English teacher called it “duty report”. At that time, the “duty report” was done by different students every day. Each time, there would be one student to talk about something. In order to make the “duty report” rich and colorful and enable more students to join in it, the teacher may suitably propose a subject of the “free talk” beforehand. Let the

    members of each group process the “free talk”. Then the teacher appoints a student to make a speech or all the members of any group carry on a collective performance. In this way, not only the students’ ability of utilizing English has been improved but also the students’ interests to

    study English have been raised.

    2.2 Preparation for the new lesson by cooperating

    The teacher tells the content and the demands of the new lesson to the students beforehand. Let the members of each group consult the new words, prepare for the dialogue, the text, and the grammar focus. After discussing in the group, students write down the difficulties that they cannot solve. Then the students may hasten to the teacher with a clear goal in the classroom. Because the students are studying in groups, sometimes the teacher can give some difficult demands to the students.

    For example, when I taught the unit “Shall we go to the zoo?” I gave the requests to the students before they were going to prepare for this unit , I asked them to do several preparations , such as:? To prepare the related
