Faculty Senate Chair
Please accept this letter as nomination of Tommy Barber for Emeritus status. Tommy recently retired as Associate Professor of History and Geography after teaching more than 23 years at Georgia Perimeter College. I offer the following as justification as how Tommy meets the criteria and why he deserves this honor:
-Founder of the GHOST (Guides of Historical Oakland Student Tours) program in collaboration with Oakland Cemetery.
-Developed “American History Through the Eyes of Atlanta-Interactive Bus and Walking
tour with instruction by GPC students.
-Developed and Engineered GPC Geography Telecourse.
-Geography students developed teaching units with instruction from Media and Library staff and then taught the class, with class members then being tested over the material. -Taught first class at Scientific Atlanta in their on site degree program. -Led Honors class on field trip to reenactment of Scopes Trial in Dayton, TN -Pioneered Service Learning Projects with Oakland Cemetery and State Historic Sites.
-2004 Teaching and Service Award, Lawrenceville Campus
-GJCAA Representative co-authored GJCAA Constitution
-Athletic Director and Baseball Coach
-Co-Sponsored and led MAP Tours
-Appointed by Lt. Governor to Georgia Civil War Commission
-Elected Chair of Georgia Civil War Commission (2 Terms)
-Appointed by Governor to Blue Ribbon Committee on Georgia History -Elected Board of Trustees, Oakland Historic Foundation
-Selected Judge and Moderator by Geography Alliance for Statewide Geography Competition
-Appeared on GPTV and PBA documentary „This is History‟
-Consultant on GPTV‟s „Civil War in Georgia”
-Conducted and authored „A Study of Georgia‟s Civil War Heritage Trails.‟
-Researched and created History and Geography informational panels at the Mall of Georgia
-Assistant Competition Director for Baseball Summer Olympic Games ACOG
-Numerous speaking engagements for the Georgia Dugout Club on behalf of GPC -Numerous speaking engagements on behalf of Oakland Cemetery
-Led annual Historic Tour for the benefit of the Law Center for the Homeless -Conduct baseball clinics for Youth Coaches
-Guest speaker for Historical Organization on behalf of the Georgia Civil War Commission
thIn support of GPC‟s 40 Anniversary Tommy is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech „GPC Reflections: 40 Years of Gwinnett in 40 minutes‟ in the Atrium of B Building.
