III. Teaching Procedures

The First Period

    I. Activities:

    1. Warm up and grouping (2 minutes)

    II. Teaching Procedures:

    1. Warm up and grouping (2 minutes)

    Greet the Ss. Share a real traveling experience, ask some guiding questions and group Ss.

    (1) T: Good evening, class. We have just finished Lesson Four in the last period.

    Today, we are going to start a very interesting new lesson, Traveling on

    Your Own. Do you like traveling? Have you ever traveled abroad on your

    own? I did. Ive been to N.Y. and L.A. by myself the summer 2 years ago.

    I met many difficulties, but I also learned a lot from them. That was a very

    wonderful experience. How about you?

    (2) T: Now, I want to divide you into six groups, and each group will have five

    members. Since we dont have much time, youd better hurry up!

2. Pre-reading activity (12 minutes)

     Ask Ss to answer the question and write their answers on the board.

    (1) T: Good. Before we begin today’s lesson, lets try to think about a question: What

    are the advantages and disadvantages of traveling on your own? (Write the

    question on the board). What youre going to do now is discuss with your

    neighbors and each group has to give three complete sentences to the advantages

    and the disadvantages. You can use the patterns we taught before: It is Adj. to

    V…” In 5 minutes, Ill pick up one student randomly from each group. The

    reporter will have to read the answers to the class. Clear? Here we go. 3. Vocabulary & idioms (22 minutes)

    (1) Make the vocabulary as flash cards. Put the vocabulary (flash cards) on the board.

    Build up several stories with certain vocabulary and idioms one by one. Guide Ss to

    have story relays. Explain the parts of speech, examples and special usages of the new words.

    T: Now, lets have a story relay together. Hmmm(pick up student A). One day, A

    decides to go traveling abroad on her own. So look at the board.

    4. Reading I (13 minutes)

    Play the tape (paragraph 1) and introduce the lesson.

    (1) T: Dont look at your book but listen to the tape carefully. You can jot down

    what you hear. After I play the tape, try to tell me what you hear and answer my

    questions. Ready? Go.

    ; Do more and more people in Taiwan like or dislike to go traveling

    independently?

    ; What are the good things about traveling independently?

(2) Present and explain the key points of the paragraph.

    (3) Ask Ss to turn to p. 100 and do 1 True/False question of Comprehension Check I.

    ; Compared with independent travel, tour-group travel is more limited. (4) Ask Ss to read the paragraph aloud.

5. Assignment (1 minutes)

    (1) Ask Ss to review the paragraph 1.

    (2) Ask Ss to memorize the newly learned vocabulary, idioms, and phrases. (3) Ask Ss to read aloud the paragraph, and ask them to pay attention to their pronunciation and intonation.

The Second Period

    I. Activities:

    II. Teaching Procedures:

    1. Warm-up and review (4 minutes)

    Greet the students. Quickly go through the vocabulary learned in the last period. Then ask two students to read aloud the first reading content, and check their

    pronunciation and intonation.

    T: In the last period, we learned some general ideas about traveling independently,

    such as its advantages and disadvantages. Now, we will continue to talk more

    about the possible problems that you may encounter when you go traveling on

    your own. But before that, I’d to hear the beautiful voices of two people. The one

    called by me should stand up and read aloud the reading that weve learned until I

    stop you, ok?

2. Dialogues (39 minutes)

    (1) Dialogue 1

    a. Play the tape

    T: First of all, I am going to play Dialogue 1. While you are listening, please try to

    catch the main idea of this paragraph. As usual, you can take notes when you

    listen to the tape. Then I will ask you to tell us what the problem is that they

    encounter.

    T: You all got the correct ideas of this paragraph, very good.

    b. Present the content of Dialogue 1. Explain the usages of certain words, the idioms

    and phrases within the paragraph.

    c. Invite pairs of students to perform the dialogue with emotions and gestures to the

class.

    d. Ask Ss to turn to p. 100 and do 1 True/False question of Comprehension Check I.

    ; In Dialogue 1, Jing-jing cant find her baggage, because the porter takes it by

    mistake.

    (2) Dialogue 2

    a. Play the tape

    T: Next, I am going to play Dialogue 2. As usual, you can take notes and try to

    catch the main idea when you listen to the tape. This paragraph has more new

    vocabulary and it is a little longer than the previous one. So you may want to

    listen to the dialogue carefully. If you need to listen to it again, I will play it one

    more time. And then I will ask some of you to tell us what the problem is that

    they encounter in this paragraph.

    T: Your listening comprehension had a great progress. That’s very good.

    b. Present the content of Dialogue 2. Explain the usages of certain words, the idioms and phrases within the paragraph.

    c. Invite pairs of students to perform the dialogue with emotions and gestures to the

    class.

    d. Ask Ss to turn to p. 100 and do 1 True/False question of Comprehension Check I.

    ; In Dialogue 2, Wei-wei wants to rent a standard-sized car instead of a compact.

    (3) Dialogue 3

    a. Play the tape

    T: Now, weve learned that you may encounter some problems in the airport and

    renting your transportation if you are bad-luck or dont have enough preparation.

    Lets follow the dialogue and see what else they will meet. I bet you all know

    what to do now. Jot down the ideas and Ill ask you later. Here we go.

    T: You all got the correct ideas of this paragraph, very good.

    b. Present the content of Dialogue 3. Explain the usages of certain words, the idioms and phrases within the paragraph.

    c. Invite pairs of students to perform the dialogue with emotions and gestures to the

    class.

    d. Ask Ss to turn to p. 100 and do 1 True/False question of Comprehension Check I.

    ; In Dialogue 3, the room rate for one night is 299 dollars.

    (4) Dialogue 4

    a. Play the tape

     T: As the previous dialogues, you will hear the problems they encounter in this

    situation. Listen carefully, and I will ask you the main ideas and what you hear in

    this dialogue. Here we go.

    b. Present the content of Dialogue 4. Explain the usages of certain words, the idioms

    and phrases within the paragraph.

    c. Invite pairs of students to perform the dialogue with emotions and gestures to the

    class.

    d. Ask Ss to turn to p. 100 and do 1 True/False question of Comprehension Check I.

    ; In Dialogue 4, the entrance to the park is closed because of the fire.

4. Comprehension Check (5 minutes)

    T: Please turn to p.100, and look at the third part at the bottom of the page. Lets answer

    question number 1, 3 and 4. Please raise your hands if you know the answers. Anyone who volunteers to answer questions will gain extra points. But remember, try to use

    your own words to make complete sentences when answering questions.

    ; What are the advantages of traveling with a tour group?

    ; Which carousel number should Jing-jing go to claim her baggage?

    ; When is the check-out time of the 7-11 Inn?

5. Assignment (2 minutes)

    (1) Ask Ss to review the dialogues.

    (2) Ask Ss to memorize the newly learned vocabulary, idioms, and phrases.

    (3) Ask each group to perform a role-play. The Ss should think about the

    difficulties that they might encounter when traveling independently. Every

    group should pick up one situation, including at the airport, at a car (or

    whatever) rental, at a tourist information center, or at a hotel (checking in

    and checking out). Ss are expected to have a creative and interesting

    performance in the next period. They can use the expressions from p.106 to

    p.108 or create some by themselves. The role-play should be 3 to 5-minute

    long. Every member is supposed to participate in the role-play.

The Third Period

    I. Activities:

    T: Good morning class, how are you today? Did you enjoy doing your homework

    yesterday? I think you just can’t wait to perform to the class, right? But we will

    review the vocabulary we learned in the last period first. And then we will finish

    the rest of the lesson. I believe you guys are all well-prepared for the role-play. In

    the next period, we will appreciate each groups show, ok? Now, please turn to

    p.101. Let’s review the vocabulary. Please repeat after me.
