    Cultivating and Maintaining the Pupils’

    Interest of Learning English

    The thesis talks about the pupils’ interest of learning English and how to cultivate

    and keep it. The following aspects are involved: the nature of pupils, the importance of pupils’ interest of learning English, the method to cultivate and maintain the pupils’

    interest. The purpose of the thesis is discussing the pupils’ interest of learning English

    to find out the measures and methods to cultivate and maintain the pupils’ interest.

    Under the new curriculum standards in English language teaching in primary schools, teachers who want to train and keep students stronger sense of learning interest should perform the followings:

    ?Enough research of materials and prepared carefully for lessons in order to make the teaching segments more interesting

    ? Focus on "people-oriented"

    1. Taking the opportunity to enhance English classroom atmosphere, leading to pupils’ interest and curiosity.

    2. Unleashing the roles of pupils

    ?Establishing a new relationship between teachers and students, and teachers and students pay more attention to emotional communication to cultivate interest

    1. Cooperated teacher-student relationship

    2. Friendly teacher-student relationship

    3. Interactive teacher-student relationship

     In short, English learning, interest is the first.

    The main task of English course in basic education stage is: through looking, listening, speaking, playing, acting, singing and a series of teaching activities, training students the ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing; helping students understand the world and differences of culture between Chinese and Western; expanding their horizons; by teaching a certain amount of words and daily communication language, cultivating students preliminary communication skills, and

    [1]encouraging students interested in learning English. Interest is the best teacher. A

    successful English teacher in teaching students consciously abiding interest in the English language to inspire students to learn in a better state, so that they will forget themselves in learning English, never tired. Therefore, teaching methods must be constantly updated. With flexible teaching methods, teachers organize students to a wide range of language practice. Through various means of stimulating the enthusiasm of students, teachers should enhance student interest in learning English training so that students become interested in participation in practice and in the long process of teaching maintaining this interest. With the language practice activities,

    [2]pupils get a steady stream of power. Practice in education and reading a lot of

    education work process, I am interested in improving primary school students to learn English and have the following views.

    ?Research of materials and prepared for lessons

    When teaching pupils a course, teachers must be very familiar with it first of all. Some teachers do not know about all the contents of this course thoroughly, but they just prepare what is talked about tomorrow and are ready to teach limitedly. They also do not know this lesson in the curriculum accounted for what position and what a role it would play in the curriculum. This is actually an irresponsible attitude. Such a lecture would not help them studying the lesson. Even the teachers themselves may not be consistently teaching. Not to mention how to talk about encouraging the study interest of pupils. Therefore, teachers not only know the entire contents of this subject, but also figure out the relationship with other subjects. Contents that teachers prepare are like a bucket of water, but the ones taught to the students only a glass of water. Such lesson preparation is adequate.


    Obviously, preparation for lessons is familiar with the contents what are going to teach. But only familiar with the contents is not enough. Teachers must also be clear of the key of this course, what the difficulties are, what the concept is, what is to grasp and what is commonly understood. Teachers must be conscious and very clear of this series of problems in lesson preparation. They should stimulate and guide students to understand it. For the key, difficult or abstract concepts, teachers need to think how to use examples or simple language to make pupils understand and accept them easily. How to cause students paying attention to important and difficult issues? In the process of preparing lessons, teachers should remind themselves about these issues. Besides with the cadence of the tone, it can also cause students to focus on these issues by using writing on the blackboard. If it is able to consciously guide and inspire students to think about them while extracting these key and difficult problems, it will be easier for students to regain the initiative to understand the difficulty and key. Dealing with learning materials and content by teachers are generally from easy to difficult, step by step in depth. Teachers should also think about stimulating the students’ interest in the degree. Students will always be in a positive state of thinking,

    so that their interest in gradual escalation. Secondly, teachers increase the fun part of

    [3]teaching and make teaching methods diversity helping to maintain pupils’ interest.

    Teachers find ways for students to create new and credible scenes before language materials are presented, thus attracting the attention of students .And then teachers translate the scenes to the ones in the book ., The scenes can be rendered more intuitive and interesting by rational use of material objects, pictures, wall charts, stick

    [4]figure, live recording, multimedia courseware. Such as in class teachers can use

    listening, reading and writing materials in English downloaded from the Internet or self-made courseware for teaching. Through the perfect combination of sound, light and electricity, teachers will get a vivid scene to enrich the student's imagination and stimulate pupils’ interest and curiosity and enhance their memory effect. The things we have done are in order to achieve teaching objectives and teaching aim. For example, when teaching the content of “Do you like baozi?", I use physical display and courseware to teach students .It is a very good way in stimulating the pupils interest.


?Focus on people-oriented

    In the past teachers are regarded as the dominant when pupil is simply treated as an object. People neglect the main part of students. Student’ brain is just looked upon as a container to be filled with knowledge. Teachers neglect teaching feature and ignore the subjectivity. Primary school teachers should think of pupils as growth potential lives. Pupils contained the main internal mechanism for development. Teaching aim is to develop the potential of students and drive the main internal mechanism for development. The philosophy of people-oriented is increasingly sinking deep into the hearts of people in the education.

    1. Enhancing English classroom atmosphere

    [5]Pupils have a playful and childish nature. They have nothing to fear, dare to think

    and speak, are active and have a strong desire to get novel and unusual. Therefore, we should grasp this opportunity and not to the blind pursuit of classroom discipline against their curiosity and thirst for knowledge. When teachers give a lesson they should speak as much as possible with the cadenced, tone-rich, humorous, full of incentives or suspense language, and with a wealth of expressions and gestures to organize classroom instruction. They also should create an open and relaxed teaching environment for students. In a harmonious and relaxed classroom atmosphere, students can make with happy heart into learning, be naturally bold and dare to speak in English. Pupils with positive thinking will constantly generate the interest of learning English and displaying their ability. There are a lot of new content materials related to the lives that the students are familiar with, so we could moderately make the classroom to be pupils’ active field.

     A good beginning is half done. Therefore, teachers should pay special attention to create a good atmosphere at the beginning ten minutes of class. We can sing some English songs or conduct such as "Let me guess" Or "Follow me" and other interesting game of reviewing the knowledge. Through lively atmosphere before class and enhancing the fun in English class, we can trigger the curiosity of students. 2. Unleashing the roles of pupils

    In the education process, teaching methods that teachers like are giving full play to the subjectivity of students. Language acquisition research and foreign language


    learning studies have confirmed: the focus of foreign language teaching no longer should be "what should we teach", but should be, "How do we create these conditions in the classroom teaching." The new curriculum standards emphasize that what do the students can do. So we in the teaching process should fully reflect the initiative and creativity of students, and enhance student ability to use English.

    Just as Bruner said: “Teaching process is raising questions and problem-solving

    activity that continues all the time." Therefore, we should create more room for students to have a think. This requires that teachers must guide students to think, discuss and answer questions, rather than limit students to think and passively go along with the teacher. For example, when teaching the content of "Ask the way", I

    [6]avoid the traditional passive way of explaining this. I use the multimedia to present

    scenarios of losing and asking the way. And then I ask questions: Suppose you, how to ask for and guide the way? Students have a discussion in group. Then each group reports to the class. We compare methods with the ones in book to find out what are the differences. When pupils learn skills, I allow students to contact our school or region to compile and performance the scene. In teaching process students are very active. Some "Ask the classroom", some "Ask the bookshop", and some "Ask the WC". The atmosphere is particularly active. Thus, I fully mobilize the subjectivity and creativity of students to help them jump out of the plight of passive indoctrination. All the pupils are to be the host of study. In class we can place the students in the master position so that students are very natural to think and express in English. Compared to the traditionally indoctrinated teaching methods, we can imagine how high of the feather.

    ?Establishing a new teacher-student relationship

     Teacher-student relationship is based on human nature. If educators believe that human nature is lazy and strict teaching is needed to enlighten the conscience, the teacher-student relationship of authoritative type should be most effective. Modern educational views are believing that human nature is positive, progressive, and with the potential for growth and progress. The aim of education is to develop human potential and to promote healthy human development. Teacher-student relationship of

    [7]authoritative type will undoubtedly stifle children's creativity force and endowments.


Therefore, we must establish a new teacher-student relationship:

    1. Cooperated teacher-student relationship

    Cooperated teacher-student relationship requires teachers not to force the pupils to obey with their wills. Compulsory education is easy to hurt children's self-confidence and self-esteem. It also causes children to resent and even fear the teachers. Pupils will not like to learn. Cooperation means that teachers and students in the personality are completely equal. Concept of the past is: "You will not learn, I'll teach you to learn; you do not want to learn, I'll force you to learn." Now the idea is: "You will not learn, I'll teach you to learn; you do not want to learn, I'll attract you to learn. "Attraction is that children enjoy learning, and to convince them to teachers and children to participate in joint activities to teaching. "

    2. Friendly teacher-student relationship

    Zhu Xiaoman once said: “It can not cast human’s spiritual world when leaving from feeling level." Education is the cause which is full of emotion and love. Teachers

    [8]should take more emotional exchanges with pupils. They also become students’

    good friends and even set up harmonious relations like father and son or mother and daughter. Students will feel that teachers are the most trustworthy person and talk everything with the teacher. Teacher-student relationship will get the high point. Love is one of the core elements. Love is necessary for teachers devoting considerable enthusiasm to students and paying attention to students’ various aspects. It is specially needed for students with learning difficulties. Friendly teacher-student relationship is strong motivation for students.

    3. Interactive teacher-student relationship

    From a sociological point of view, the teaching process is a course of interaction between teachers and students. The nature and quality of teacher-student interaction, to a certain extent, plays a decisive impact on the effect of teaching. In teaching activities teachers always dispose of their teaching behavior by certain ideas such as education concept, student view and quality. The students understand the impact of teachers to accept and respond in action according to their own values and needs. The response of students further strengthens or amends the existing teacher education values and behaviors. Therefore, interaction between teachers and students form a
