    I Introduction

The role of church trustee is met with much confusion having neither specific designation, nor detailed description of duties and responsibilities in the bible. Unlike that of deacons, whose roles are quiet spelled out in New Testament epistles. The emergence of specific departments of the church such as that of the Trustee‟s came much later in time after the appointment of deacons.

The distinction between deacons and trustees has not always been clear. Tasks are undertaken inter-changeably by both deacons and trustees often leading to conflicts. In many churches trustees are used as janitors and fix-it persons. While in others they are some of the most renowned persons among congregants with keen business skills and investment savvy. Why so much confusion? And why such a broad range of duties? It is also difficult to find books that adequately explain the purpose, role and responsibilities of Church Trustees. Much is left up to the local membership.

    II Roles of the Trustees

Although each church may vary somewhat in its

description of the roles of the trustees, there are some basic responsibilities that are common to all:

     steward caretaker

     proprietor enabler of ministry

     financier manager (for others)

Theses responsibilities should be explained to those nominated, appointed, or elected to serve as trustee of the church. They should never be left to figure out what they must do on their own. It is the responsibility of the congregation and leaders to establish the relationship, manage expectations, and spell out duties to new trustees. How where you introduced to your role as trustee?

As you begin to understand the responsibilities given you as a trustee, select the word that best describes what you do compared to what you were initially told? Why did you select that word?

5 Church Trustee Guide

List areas of responsibility that fall to the Board of Trustees. Post your response on „Trustee Talk. Be sure to give your name first followed by, “The responsibilities that fall to my Board of Trustees are,” then review responses posted by other

    classmates (if taking course online).

In his book, The Work of the Church Trustee, Orlando L.

Tibbetts divides the work of the trustee into four categories, each beginning with the letter “M” (Chapter 2). He writes of:

    - Trustees as Managers,

    - Trustees as Maintenance Supervisors,

    - Trustees in Ministry, and

    - Trustees in Mission.

Look at your list and place each task under the appropriate category (You can expect most of your contributions to be under “managers” or “maintenance supervisors.”)

    and

    III Scripture Study

The New Testament gives us insights into the workings of the early church and the decisions that were made to follow Christ‟s teachings faithfully in the lives of individuals and the

life of the corporate community. Our churches today are more complex in structure and organization, but we still must look for guidance in Scripture to keep us true to our heritage.
