ISUZU TRUCK PUTS FRESH NEW FACE ON ALL-NEW N-SERIES FOR 2006
Improving upon the N-Series is no easy task, yet Isuzu Truck managed to do just that for 2006, with a host of enhancements that give the N-Series a fresh new look outside and more driver comfort and convenience inside.
“The current Isuzu N-Series delivers more of what medium-duty customers demand from their vehicle:
more performance, more payload-carrying capacity, easier driver maintenance checks and enhanced driver comfort. For 2006, we’re delivering a more modern appearance – one reflecting N-Series’ key
attributes of strength and durability,” said Jim Underwood, president, General Motors Isuzu Commercial Truck, LLC (GMICT).
More modern exterior appearance
The new Isuzu N-Series features a composite bumper for improved styling, new flush-mounted headlamps, cornering lamps and turn signal. The overall result is a more modern adaptation of Isuzu’s legendary performance and reliability. Also new for 2006 are a front chrome N-Series badge and new door decals, which include make, model, engine displacement and fuel type.
More interior comfort and convenience
Because a more comfortable driver can be a more productive driver, the 2006 N-Series features a lighter interior cab color that creates a sense of spaciousness, as well as new Jacquard flat-woven breathable cloth seat material. In addition to being more comfortable, the seat material also is more resistant to tears and stains, which means the interior of the N-Series will look new for a longer period of time.
Other N-Series convenience and functionality enhancements for 2006 include the addition of a tachometer to aid Power Take Off (PTO) operation; new ISO symbols, incorporated to meet market demands; a new rear steel engine cover to improve back-of-cab appearance and to help retain heat during cold weather operation; a new engine control module mounting bracket for improved body mounting; and a Donaldson polypropylene air cleaner for the diesel single cab for easier serviceability and more corrosion resistance. The air cleaner features a large paper element with more surface area for better filtering and longer life.
Additional N-Series enhancements for 2006 include standard power door locks and the availability of an NPR diesel model with 12,000-pound GVW rating certified for all 50 states.
5.2L diesel engine
Proof that the N-Series is more than just a pretty face can be found under the hood, where the overhead cam 5.2L 4HK1-TC turbocharged, intercooled, diesel engine is situated. It features electronic high-pressure common-rail fuel injection, produces 190 horsepower and 387 lb.-ft. of torque and covers GVW ranges from 12,000 pounds to 19,500 pounds. The 5.2-liter diesel provides improved vehicle performance to handle large payloads, as well as more efficient operation for reduced operating costs. It has a B10 durability rating of 310,000 miles, further supporting lower operating expenses.
The 5.2L diesel is equipped with a standard, heated fuel/water separator and features a dash-mounted
warning lamp. This separator warns the driver when water is present in the fuel filter and needs to be drained, which helps prevent vehicle down time and supports a more efficient operation. The 5.2L diesel can be mated to a six-speed manual transmission with all forward gears synchronized, or with the Aisin 450-43LE heavy-duty four-speed automatic with overdrive and lockup converter in second and fourth gear.
Isuzu N-Series diesel models include the NPR, NPR HD, NQR, NPR HD Crew Cab, NQR Crew Cab and the NRR.
Vortec 6.0L engine
For Isuzu N-Series customers who prefer a gasoline engine, NPR and NPR HD models are available with the Vortec 6000 6.0L engine. The Vortec 6000 delivers 300 horsepower and 358 lb.-ft. of torque. These models are mated to the Hydra-Matic 4L80-E four-speed automatic with lockup torque converter and overdrive. (Please see the specification pages for a complete list of powertrain choices.)
Isuzu market dominance
Isuzu commercial trucks dominated the Class 3-5 medium-duty truck market share in 2003 with a 53 percent share. Isuzu also has been the best-selling cab-over brand in the U.S. since 1986. Of the nearly 330,000 Isuzu-built diesel trucks sold in the US since 1984, more than 86 percent are still registered and in service, as are 98.6 percent of gasoline trucks sold since 1993.
Gasoline-powered versions of the Isuzu N-Series are manufactured in Janesville, Wisconsin, while diesel-powered models are manufactured in Fujisawa, Japan.
