    Article # 1-

    th1. The President spoke June 4 in Cairo, Egypt, in one of the largest cities in the Muslim

    World.

    2. There are 1.4 billion people practicing the Islamic religion and 7 million are practicing in

    America.

    3. There has been much tension between America and the Islamic communities since the

    attack on the US on September 11, 2001, by a few Muslim extremists. We now need to

    make an effort to listen to each other.

    4. Violent extremism in all forms will be confronted when it threatens our security. It will

    not be tolerated in America but we will never be at war with Islam, the religion. The

    second issue he stated was that our bonds with Israel are “Unbreakable” and that the

    Arab World and Palestinians need much more discussion.

    5. He feels the only way to settle the difference is to have the Palestinians abandon

    violence and have their own nation, possibly on the borders of Israel.

    Article #2-

    1. This is the last issue of the Key to be published this year.

    2. It has been funded by an Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFL) grant through

    the Wisconsin Technical College System, but funding was cut by more than 42% because

    of the economy.

    3. A decision had to be made whether to fund the literacy services for adult students or to

    drop the Key Newspaper Project.

    4. It has been published for 21 years and will be missed; it was very successful. 5. Yes, the archives (old newspaper copies) can be found at the website www.keynews.org

    6. True- from the Milwaukee Journal publisher to writers, advisors, layout artist,

    distribution manager and instructors who wrote the lesson plans.

    7. The Milwaukee Area Technical College had the project under the tutelage of Virginia

    1. General Motors cannot survive; it was unable to pay its debts (bills), so it was allowed to

    file for bankruptcy on June 1, 2009.

    2. GM says it owes $172 billion and claims it only has $82 billion. 3. The Federal Government is going to give them $50 billion to keep GM in business. The

    government will own 60 percent of the company.

    4. The president feels that GM is too important to the future of the nation to be allowed to

    shut down.

    5. Obama hopes to help GM become a good and profitable business in a short time and

    then the government can leave the business to operate on its own. 6. Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, Pontiac and Oldsmobile are some models. 7. Sales slowed down and the current recession caused many people to keep their old

    vehicles.

    8. The president wants them to be successful soon so the government does not have to

    stay involved in the company. They hope to have protection from their creditors and

    hope the government will cancel about $79 billion in debt.

    9. Yes, they will continue to operate but with fewer workers, and they will make fewer cars

    so will stop making some models like Pontiacs.

    10. They have 91,000 employees in the US and will eliminate 21,000 hourly jobs and 8,000

    office jobs.

    11. Toyota passed GM in sales last year.

    Article # 4-

    1. The plane left from the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, heading for Paris, France. 2. While crossing the equator, an imaginary line that cuts the earth in two with equal

    distance north and south of this line, they encountered strong thunderstorms in that

    area. The plane was flying at night, and it is felt the speed sensors may have been not

    operating properly.

    3. The airplane is operated by the French airline Air France and it was an Airbus 330, one

    of the safest to fly.

    4. They believe the airplane broke apart about 700 miles northeast of the coast of Brazil,

    thousands of feet above the ocean, for the bodies and wreckage found have been

    widely scattered.

    5. Navy ships from many nations searched for hundreds of miles, especially the Brazilian

    Navy. France’s Navy sent a submarine hoping to recover the black boxes.

    6. The black boxes send out signals for about 30 days and hold information that can help

    determine what happened; it records voices of the pilots. They hope the signal leads

    them to the boxes.

    1. It is estimated that 30 to 50 percent of Americans, especially women, do not use

    medicines as directed.

    2. This causes extra doctor and hospital visits, lost wages and changed prescriptions. 3. It costs Americans about $76.6 billion each year.

    1. Sidney Crosby from Canada and Evgeni Malkin from Russia helped win the League

    Champion Stanley Cup. The Stanley Cup is the trophy awarded to the league winners. 2. Good attitude and motivation.

    3. Both scored more than 100 points in the season and more than 30 points in the playoff. 4. Over 80 million people watched Game 7 on NBC-TV, but it is a long way from major

    league football, basketball or baseball.

    harmful, but the right amount gives you Vitamin D, and that is good for you. 2. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium needed for strong bones; may protect you

    against osteoporosis, high blood pressure, cancer and other diseases. 3. Rickets, which is the softening and weakening of bones that cause broken bones and

    deformities.

    4. The ultraviolet radiation over a long time can affect your skin, eyes, and immune system,

    causing many serious health problems.

    7. No, everyone is affected by the ultraviolet rays; darker people tan easier and burn less

    than light skin people, but all get skin and eye damage from the suns rays.
