Well, here it is again, time to start thinking about getting ready for band camp Woodwind Caption Head as well as the upcoming football and contest season. “How can I do this,” you ask? You
can start by playing your instrument. You should be able to play for AT LEAST one half Byron Brandon Brass Caption Head hour straight without hurting yourself. Next, GET OFF THE COUCH!!! Get out and walk around your neighborhood, swim, play tennis, etc. The idea is to get your “chops” in shape Brian Bell as well as the rest of your body. Percussion Caption Head
Once you receive your music at mini-camp, it will be a good idea to start memorizing it. Cindy Brun Color Guard Caption Head There will be music checks with the possibility of lost free time at band camp. If you do not want to lose free time, then be ready. New members should also have the school songs down, memorized if possible . . . The Fight Song, The Alma Mater, and The Star Spangled
Banner. This will significantly help you out at band camp. You should have: 2 different Medical forms, Instrument Use Agreement, and the Music Greg Taylor Booster Volunteer Form. Keep all these papers and show them to your parents . . . they Band President want to know what is going on too. Fill out the forms, then pack this entire packet in your Hayden Huffman luggage and bring it to band camp. Wes Perry Band Manager Band Mini-Camp Activities (July 28 thru August 1)
Joe Taylor Rookie Camp Music Booster President 740.549.2525 All incoming freshmen and any new members of the OHS band program are required to firstname.lastname@example.org attend “Rookie Camp” the week of July 28 from 8:00am to 12:00pm. This is a good way to help new band members get started on the “left” foot. During this week we will focus on Ellen Fox basic marching and some fundamentals of marching and playing. These rehearsals are Music Booster Vice-President meant to be a fun way for new members to become acclimated to marching band; however 740.657.1379 email@example.com you do need to wear cool comfortable clothing, white cotton socks and comfortable tennis
shoes because we will be marching. Please DO NOT wear tank tops, tube tops, sports Nancy Moore bras, sandals, or shoes without socks. lead their sections, teach drill moves, correct posture and marching errors, and generally be a positive role model. Leaders should come prepared to learn a little and teach a lot! A tennis ball is a great tool to have on hand for demonstrating various heel and toe placements.
The Marching Percussion section faces many unique challenges on the marching field that the other sections do not have. As with the percussion section, the Color Guard faces many unique problems in the marching arena. To help them overcome these situations the Color Guard will have mini-camp the week of July 28 from 8:00am to 4:00pm. Members should wear cool comfortable clothing, white socks, and tennis shoes and be ready for a workout! A water bottle and sun block would also be appropriate since we will be spending part of our time outside in the sun. Make sure you have any additional equipment (as specified by your instructor) that you will need to learn show music, cadences, and marching techniques. Field Commander Mini-Camp
Field Commanders will already be at OHS for leadership camp; however you will stay for FC clinics afterwards and should also pack a lunch. FC's need to bring a 1" 3 ring binder with around 100 plastic sheet protectors to hold show music and drill charts. We will break down FC responsibilities, how to help individuals and sections, how to read a musical score, proper conducting technique and basic patterns. Dinner will be provided.
Full Band Mini-Camp
All band members should report to the band room by 5:00pm. Members should wear cool comfortable clothing, white socks, and tennis shoes (no sandals or flip-flops). A water bottle and sun block would also be appropriate since we will be spending part of our time outside in the sun. We will spend half of rehearsal distributing and rehearsing show and stand music, and the other half outside reviewing marching techniques and basic drill moves. We will also start working on pre-game at this time. Band Camp Information (August 3 thru August 8)
This year we will be returning to the Heartland Retreat Center in Marengo, Ohio. All members should
plan to arrive at Heartland between 2:00pm and 3:00pm to register at camp, move their belongings into their room, and prepare for dinner. If you would like more information about the camp or their facilities please visit their website at: www.heartlandretreat.com
The cost for camp this year will be $300.00 and must be paid in full before members will be allowed to move in to their room. You may pay the fee anytime between July 28 and August 3. YOU WILL NEED
TO HAVE THE MEDICAL FORMS FILLED OUT AND SIGNED BY YOUR PARENTS IN ORDER TO
PARTICIPATE AT BAND CAMP! Please don’t forget them.
We have a great menu planned for everyone so all students are expected to eat at every meal unless there is a medical reason. This is not the time to try to lose weight, etc. If you are missed at any meal, you will have to eat the next one with Mr. Brun! A fate worse than death!
If any parents are available to help chaperone, or wish to help out for the whole week, email Mrs. Boisvert firstname.lastname@example.org; even if you can only come up for one (or more) days, your help will be greatly at appreciated. As in past years, parents are invited to come up on Friday, so we can “show off” what we have learned for the week. We move the show to 5:00pm to help accommodate working parents who
would like to attend our performance. After the show and after members are check-out of their dorms, you may take your student home.

During our time away we will focus on marching fundamentals, music rehearsal, music memorization, and building a sense of community among the band members. In order to accomplish these tasks, I will be bringing a camp staff that is experienced in all aspects of Marching Band. Camp instructors will run sectional rehearsals, as well as help in placing drill charts and acting as a liaison between the students and directors. I expect that all instructors will be treated with the same respect and dignity that is given to any other teacher or director. Disrespect or verbal abuse of a director or instructor will not be tolerated and may result in the offending student being sent home from camp and possible removal from the
instrumental music program.
During the day the students will be given free time at set times. The period of time after breakfast is when cabins should be cleaned (daily), beds made, and any other grooming should be done. When organized activities are planned, all students are expected to attend. In the afternoons, if music checks are passed,
students will be allowed the use of the pool. Rules will be set by the camp and lifeguard and will be
enforced. There will be snacks and drinks available for purchase during the 3:00 pm free time.
All students are expected to be on time for every rehearsal during the day. I recommend wearing a watch
so that you are never late. We will start with calisthenics at 7:00 am each morning and will include basic
stretching, muscle warm-up, mental exercises, and light running. If for any reason you feel that you
cannot make it to a rehearsal, YOU MUST CONTACT A CHAPERONE OR DIRECTOR IMMEDIATELY!

Band Camp is an extension of the Olentangy High School Educational System. Therefore all traditional
school rules apply at camp. Infractions of any of these rules may result in one or more of the following: 1. Push-ups on the marching field
2. Run laps around the marching field
3. Loss of afternoon free time
4. Loss of third quarter privileges
5. Sending the student home
6. Removal from the instrumental music program
In my experience with band camps, these are rarely used, and I expect that this camp will be no different.

At the conclusion of band camp, we will have evening rehearsals from 5:00pm – 7:00pm on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. All members are expected to arrive at the band room no later than 5:00pm.

Equipment / Uniform Accessories Price List
As with any activity, there are some additional costs that are incurred during the course of the year. I
have tried to list all equipment and uniform accessories that will be needed during marching season. The
cost of some items may seem on the expensive side, however, with proper care they will last the entire
season, and in many cases more than one year.
This year’s band fee (or Pay to Play) is $20.00 for both Concert and Marching Band and $50.00 for color
guard. This fee includes all instructional costs, and most transportation costs.
I have included this breakdown of expenses so that there is no misunderstanding about what each
student is expected to be financially responsible for. This is a list of EVERYTHING that a new band
member would be expected to obtain with approximate costs. The total will be different for each
individual student depending on what equipment the already own, how well used equipment has been
maintained and how much was paid into their student accounts from fundraisers.

Some of these items will be available throughout the season so an immediate expense may not be
necessary. The only items that will be needed by Friday the last day of band camp are the items for the
summer uniform (blue shirt, khaki shorts).
As we move closer to many of these performances, the times can and will change, many times out of our
control. Please be flexible, and know that I will do my utmost to keep this schedule and times.
