III. APPROVAL OF April 2, 2009 MEETING MINUTES
The minutes should reflect that John Harris, representing the Secretary of
State, was in attendance at the April 2, 2009, meeting.
Moved to approve the minutes of the April 2, 2009, meeting, as amended. Supported. Passed.
IV. ADDITIONS TO AGENDA AND APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Moved that the agenda be approved. Supported. Passed.
V. OPENING COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS
A. MDE Initiated – (30 minutes)
1. Louis Burgess of the Michigan Department of Education presented an
overview of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
2. Status Update of Section 53 - Medical Examination Procedure for
School Bus Drivers (Micklash)
Ken Micklash reported that the Legislative process revising the medical
examination procedure is on hold. It was suggested that the Michigan
Department of Education work with some other agencies, such as
Wayne RESA, to be certain the Legislature receives the proposed
language which would amend the school bus driver medical
VI. PRELIMINARY RECOMMENDATIONS/ITEMS PRESENTED TO
A. Curriculum and Training (Coaster/Micklash) (25 minutes)
1. Beginning School Bus Driver Curriculum Update
The Department of State Police and Secretary of State are moving
toward reviewing any outstanding units. Revisions to units are
progressing on schedule. Completed items will be brought back to the
committee for approval.
2. Curriculum Version Control Procedure
Attachment A was distributed – Draft Curriculum Version Control.
Discussion ensued. One modification was suggested.
Moved to approve the Curriculum Version Control Procedure document with one correction. Supported. Passed. The Attachment A that is posted includes the final version’s language.
B. Management and Best Practices (No items)
C. State and National Issues (Hooper/Micklash) (25 minutes)
1. National Congress on School Transportation
Ken provided an update to the activities that are scheduled for the pre-
work of this group. Sharron VanCampen reported on the work of her
subcommittee. Michigan’s work is on schedule. A suggestion was made
regarding specifications for seat belts. It will be passed on to the national

1. Curriculum Development Timeline for School Bus Driver Continuing
Attachment B was distributed and discussed.
Moved to approve the Curriculum Development Timeline for School Bus Driver Continuing Education Curriculum. Supported. Passed. The corrected version of Attachment C is posted.
2. Curriculum Development Timeline for Supervisor Continuing
Education Training Program
Attachment C was distributed and discussed.
Moved to approve the Curriculum Development Timeline for Supervisor Continuing Education Training Program as corrected. Supported. Passed. The corrected version of Attachment C is posted.
Mac Dashney reviewed the current work plan for development of the
Transportation Supervisor Training Curriculum (Attachment D) and
some of the proposed content.
