    *December 7-9, 2005 ; Richmond, VA

    The Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services (DRS), in collaboration with the Brain Injury Association of Virginia, is sponsoring a 2-1/2 day Community Support

    *Services Trainer Program on December 7-9, 2005 in Richmond. The training is for

    anyone who wants to gain knowledge and skills in working with people with acquired brain injury in community settings. Individuals interested in working as Community Support Services staff (i.e., independent living / life skills trainers; job coaches) would benefit from attending this program, as well as staff from organizations interested in applying for approval as vendor of Community Support Services for DRS customers (participation in this training is not a requirement for DRS vendor approval).

    THE REGISTRATION FEE FOR THIS TRAINING IS $75.

    CRC CREDITS WILL BE AVAILABLE THROUGH DRS AT NO ADDITIONAL COST.

* NOTE that the training will be held in two locations (directions to both locations are included below):

    ; DAY 1 (Wednesday, December 7) WILL BE HELD AT Community College Workforce Alliance,

    North Run Corporate Center on Parham Road; and

    ; DAYS 2 & 3 (Thursday & Friday, December 8 & 9) WILL BE HELD AT Virginia Department of

    Rehabilitative Services, Central Office.

Community Support Services Trainers provide intensive, one-to-one assistance to

    people with acquired brain injury in their homes, on work sites, and in other community settings of choice. Community Support Services Trainers typically focus on assessment and intervention strategies designed to increase someone’s ability to

    live more independently.

    PROGRAM GOALS: The Community Support Services Trainer Program will provide

    participants with a minimum level of knowledge and skills in the provision of Community Support Services for people with acquired brain injury and other disabilities. Topics include an overview of the brain; causes and effects of injury to the brain; individual / family issues related to brain injury; development and implementation of service plans; addressing challenging behaviors; assessment of learning style and use of compensatory strategies; and pharmacological issues. Participants who attend the entire 2-1/2 day training program and who choose to complete a written assessment (and earn a passing grade) will receive a DRS-awarded Certificate of Completion. [NOTE: A Certificate of Completion does not imply

    DRS endorsement of any individual or organization as a provider of services. A Certificate of

    Completion does not constitute DRS vendorship approval nor is it a requirement for DRS vendorship: DRS vendors are approved through a separate process. The Certificate of

    Completion does NOT represent state certification of Community Support Services trainers by

    .] DRS as no such certification currently exists

Register early! Space is limited. There is A $75 REGISTRATION FEE to attend this

    training (check or money order only made out to BIAV”). Payment may be made

    on-site. Lunch/snacks will be provided on Wednesday and Thursday (morning snacks only on Friday). Participants are responsible for all other meals and for their own lodging (hotel information below). Registrations must be received by DECEMBER 2nd.
