Conclusion: The historical and modern reasons, together with the media hype determine that British Royal Family is so eye-catching.
When we surf on the Internet, all kinds of news about the British Royal Family will enter our eyes. And we always cannot wait to read them. For instance, Prince Harry and Chelsy Davy's marriage becomes a hit recently. Many manufacturers try to cash in on their future wedding by making cups and plates with the couple's images. We are wondering why the British Royal Family is so eye-catching.
Williams hold the view in Queen and Country that the Royal Family is
hereditary gene, representing the unique nationalities. As the symbol of the country, the Royal Family and the crown exist in all aspects of the British’s daily life. With the civilianization of the Royal Family, many Europeans begin to doubt the necessity of Royal Family’s existence, owing to the huge expenses. Referring to Royal Family, a
German once said in an interview if the British are willing to support the Royal Family with a large sum of money every year, why not follow it with interest?
In our opinions, the reasons why the British Royal Family is so eye-catching lie in many aspects. Its historical background plays an important role. Its impacts on modern Britain and the world, as well as various tidbits help to shape today's Royal Family.
Throughout the history of the Great Britain, people can see the noble Kings and Queens and their magnificent achievements. Due to their remarkable
accomplishments, they established the solid foundation of their social status. To some extent, this is why they can keep their Royal Family for such a long time.
In the course of the British history, two great female figures can not be ignored ---Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria. Both of them paved the way for the Britain to become a powerful country in the world.
As for the popularity, the Queen Elizabeth I (1533--1603) lived up to this
threputation. Her name ranked the 7 place on the“100 greatest British celebrities”list,
which left other Kings’ far behind. And the historians gave the highest marks to her.
In addition, her image was depicted in many movies for so many years. Why was she
so popular? That probably had something to do with her accomplishments when she was in power. Elizabeth I succeeded to keep the unity of the Britain and combat the religious threat. The Britain was an enlightened society under her governance, which gave more space to make the English culture reach its peak. It produced many masters like William Shakespeare. At the same time, the marine business began to develop, which gradually brought the influence of the Queen to the whole world. Queen's charisma got the fame for the whole Royal Family and made it stand in the history solidly.
Then the Glorious Revolution broke out in 1688, turning the Britain into a monarchy, which is a root cause of the important role of the Royal Family in the British society.
Later Alexandrina Victoria (1819--1901) who was the very person to push this glory to the peak took the crown. Victoria supported the colonial expansion policy strongly. And colonization made the Victoria become a household name in the world. During this period of time, the British economy and technology grew dramatically. Consequently, people enjoyed the marvelous progress. And children could be educated for free since then. All these things were achieved with the support of the Queen Victoria. Many cities, rivers, lakes and ports were named after Victoria, which exactly proved the great influence of the Queen. Alexandrina Victoria also pushed the Britain to become the Empire where the sun never sets and enlarged the influence of the Britain in the whole world, which brought about a strong sense of pride in the British' hearts. Therefore, Queen Victoria became the symbol of the peace and prosperity of Great Britain(师永刚？79). Accordingly, the Royal Family enjoys this
holy social status and gets so much attention from the public.
As the symbol of the nation, the British Royal Family, especially the Queen, performs a great many important tasks on behalf of the nation today.
Queen Elizabeth II is Head of State of the United Kingdom. She is also monarch, in both a ceremonial and symbolic sense, of most countries in the Commonwealth.
Under a constitutional monarchy, the powers of the Monarch (the Queen or King) are limited by either constitutional law or convention. The Queen must accept the decisions of the Cabinet and Parliament. The Monarch can express her views on government matters privately to the Prime Minister, for example at their weekly "audience". But all affairs of government must follow the Prime Minister's decision. As the famous phrase goes, the Queen can only “advice, warn, and encourage”.
There would be a constitutional crisis if the Monarch ever spoke out publicly either for or against government policy. The primary role of the monarch today is to symbolize the tradition and unity of the British state. The Queen plays important ceremonial roles in the opening and closing of Parliament. Each year at the beginning of a new parliamentary session she reads by tradition "the Queen's speech" from a throne in the House of Lords, stating the Government's policies for the next session.
In addition, the Queen has other roles: the head of the executive, an integral part of the legislature, the head of the judiciary, commander in chief of the Armed Forces and “supreme governor” of the Church of England. The Queen also acts as a confidante to the Prime Minister, offering valuable observations on the running of government.
Today, the British family also shoulders the burden to maintain good image in the people’s heart. As Diana said, “The British Royal Family should strengthen the
contact with people rather than being alone on the bicycle” (伯勒尔,23).
One of the most typical characters of British royalty culture lies in the Royal Family’s tidbits, namely all sorts of box news of the family members’ personal lives. It is a common phenomenon in all monarchies, especially in Britain. As the country’s
most famous nobility and owner of countless properties, supplemented by their well-educated background and fantastic life experiences, Queen Elizabeth and her families are born to be the focus of the crowd. Therefore, any tiny news concerning their life becomes the perfect report materials for the newspapers and magazines,
among which the love gossips of these celebrities are never-out-of-date topics for British people, just as Prince Charles, Diana and Camilla’s love triangle was in last
The Sun, an English tabloid with the largest circulation across the country, is famous for reporting royal tidbits. In January 2005, the Prince Harry, who is third in line to the throne, hit the headlines after wearing a swastika armband to a friend's
fancy dress party whose theme was "colonial and native”. His behavior was widely
criticized and he made a public apology later for hurting Jewish people’s feeling.
What’s worse, Prince Harry’s Nazi costume has made negative impact on London’s
bid for Olympics. Le mond, France’s biggest newspaper, quoted the words of Jean-François Lamour (French Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports)？that the Queen
Elizabeth should be awarded with a medal for ruining London’s bids for Olympics. It seems that in the Royal Family, a small mistake like that can cause severe consequences, due to people’s excessive attention.
The British Royal Family is a shining star among the biggest monarchies in its 1139 year-old history. Apart from the United Kingdom, The Queen Elizabeth II is also Queen of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Saint Kitts and Nevis, etc. The important and irreplaceable role on society, politics, culture, economy and other aspects in the world remains the Royal Family eye-catching for long. Although the gossips even scandals in the modern life damage Royal Family’s
reputation, to some extent, those gossips imply the high level of concern on the Family. Thanks to the Royal Family’s long history story and remarkable influence, the
title of Queen or King of England will continue to be passed on as long as the blood line continues.
