    Unit 3 What are you doing for vacation? Language goals:

    In this unit students learn to talk about future plans.

    New languages:

    What are you doing for vacation?

    Im babysitting my sister.

    Whats she doing for vacation?

    Shes babysitting her sister.

    When are you going?

    Im going on Monday.

    How long are they staying?

    They are staying for four days.

    Difficult points:

    1. How to improve the students writing ability according to the reading materials.

    Teaching periods:

    Period One

    Teaching aims:

    1. Teach vocabulary words.

    2. Target languages: (1) What are you doing? Im babysitting my sister.

    (2) What is she doing? She is babysitting her sister.

    Teaching procedure:

    Step 1. Warming up

    Lets students say out some activities they have done as often as possible.

    Step 2. Revision

    Watch a video and revise the present progressive tense.

    Revise something about vacation by asking:

    Where did you go on vacation?

    How was your vacation?

    Step 3. Presentation

    AskWhat did you do last vacation? Write the students answers on the

    blackboard, try to include on the list camp, babysitting my sister, send time

    with my friends, relax at home, visit my grandmother, do some sports,

    watch TV

    Teach the vocabulary words and askWhat are you doing for vacation?

    Then answerIm babysitting my sister.

    Show students a big calendar which prepared before class and say:Today

    is Thursday. Two days later is Saturday. I am staying at home on

    Saturday. And I am not going out.

    Ask students:What about you? What are you doing on Saturday?

    Students answer the questions in different way and teacher writes downI

    am staying at home on Saturday.on the blackboard.

Step 4. Section A 1a

    1. Call attention to the conversation in the speech bubbles. Read the

    conversation with a student.

    2. Point to the character in the illustration and ask questions about each.

    3. Look at the vacation activities in the picture. Ask students to make a list

    and add some more.

    4. Check the answers.

    Step 5. Section A 1b

    This activity gives students practice in

    recognizing the target language in spoken

    conversation.

    1. Say you will hear three conversations. Listen carefully and number the

    pictures 1-3 in 1a.

    2. Play the recording for the first time. Students only listen. Then say next

    time please number the pictures in 1a. Then play again.

    3. Check the answers.

    Step 6. Section A 1c Pair work

    This activity provides guided oral practice using the target language.

    1. Call attention to the conversation. Ask two students to read it.

    2. Then point to the pictures in 1a, say now has conversations using these

    activities. Take turns to ask and answer questions.

    3. Ask two students to demonstrate a conversation using the activity in the

    picture.

    Step 7. Presentation

    Ask a studentWhat are you doing for your vacation?Let the student

    answer. Then askWhen are you going?If the student cant answer, the

    teacher can offer help.Im going next Saturday.

Say you will hear a recording of a conversation. ListenWhat are Hector,

    Susan and Molly doing for vacation?Fill in the chart.

    1. Listen again and find out when they are going on vacation. Fill in the chart.

    2. Play the whole recording and ask students to complete the chart

    individually.

    3. Play the tape many times until the students catch it. Then check the

    answers.

    Step 9. Section A 2c Group work

    This activity provides guided oral practice using the target language. 1. Call attention to the sample conversation and ask two students to read it aloud.

    2. Say a conversation with a student. Ask What are you doing for

    vacation Yi Lin? Ask the student to tell the truth. Repeat the students

    answer.

    3. Ask students to work in groups of four. As they work, move around the room listening to conversations and offering help as needed. Ask groups of students to present their conversations to the class.

    Step 10. Conclusion

    1. Learn and master the vocabulary words.

    Step 1. Warming up

    Ask some students to report the result of their vacation plans.

    Step 2. Lead-in

    T: Your plans are exciting. Would you like to know the vacation plans of

    Tony and Lin Hui?

    Step 3. Reading (Section A 3a)

    Ask students to read the conversation.

    Practice reading the conversation with partner.

    Explain the target language and useful expressions.

    e.g.

    Fill in the chart individually.

    Step 4. Pair work (Section A 3b)

    Explain the form on the left. Friday-Tuesday means from Friday to Tuesday.

    language. Use the information below. Students can work with a partner or

    individually.

    Dave is going to his cousins house for a week.

    Step 5. Vacation dreams

    Individual work. Tell the students to imagine the dream vacation and write

    down what you are doing for vacation, when you are going and how long

    you are staying.

    Put your own paper in a bag, and then take another one out.

    Group work. Read it aloud in your groups, and let listeners fill the

    following form.

    Step 6. Grammar focus

    Review the grammar box. Ask students to say the questions and statements.

    Write the statements and questions in the box on the board. Ask students to

    conclude the verb form.

    the students may say out the new vocabulary words in Section B 1a. Step 2. Presentation (Section B 1a)

    Say National Day is coming. What are you doing for vacation?

    (With pictures to learn and master the following vocabulary wordsgoing

    bike riding, going sightseeing, taking walks, going fishing, renting videos,

    camping, babysitting, exercising etc. )

    Step 3. Pair work (Section B 1b)

    Ask “What do you like to do on vacation?” Use the words from activity 1a

    and any other words that the students know to make conversations about

    vacation plans in pairs.

    Step 4. Task one: Show one’s own vacation plan.

    Brain storm: (Section B 1b). Let students speak out the vacation activities

    theyd like to do. Pay attention to the time, the place and so on. Step 5. Task two: Travel around.

    Section B 2a: Listen to the tape and check the questions the reporter asks.
