    2. Lead-in

    Read out the title that it is a proverb. Elicit what the proverb means. Ask ss to look at the pictures and read the names of the places. Elicit how the title is related to them. Five continents: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Australia.

    Go through the list of prompts and explain any unknown vocabulary. Ss a answer the questions.

    3. Text

? Vocabulary Practice

    1. weather

    Read the heading. Elicit words related to it from ss. Explain that ss are going to listen to a weather prompts. Play the tape, ss listen and write down the missing words for each place. Check ss; answers. Ss then use the prompts and their answers to talk about the weather in each place.

    Add some new word describing weather.

    Review place names in the table and help ss locate them on a map. Then ask some ss to present their forecasts for different cities to the class.

    2. holidays

    Read out the list of items and explain the meaning of any unknown words. Explain the task and read out the example. Allow ss two minutes to complete the task, then ask individual ss to read out their answers.

    Scan the quiz, and lead ss to have their own choice, at the end of the quiz do a quick survey of the class to see how many ss scored mostly As, Bs, Cs or Ds. Ss work in pairs and do the exercise. Check ss’ answers sand explain any unknown words. Ss then talk about the place they spent their last holidays. 3. Traveler’s tips

    4. Festivals

    Read out the prompts in the table. Quickly revise nationality adjectives. Ss, in pairs, complete the task. Check ss’ answers.

    Ss work in pairs and talk about a festival in China. Monitor ss’ performance and then

    ask individual ss to present their answers to the class.

    As an extension, ss can write a short article.

    2. Conditional types


    Elicit rules and use from ss. Type 1 is used for a real situation in the future. Point out that when the if-clause precedes the mian clause, the two clauses are separated by a comma. Also point out that unless means if not. Refer ss to the Grammar Reference section for further detail.

    Read out the examples. Ss copy the diagram into their notebooks and make up sentences about themselves.

    3. The definite article

    Pre-reading: geography quiz game: Divide class into teams. Ask quiz questions. Give one point for each correct answer. The team with the most points is the winner. Explain the task. Quickly revise the use of the .ss, in teams, add the where necessary. Refer ss to the Grammar Reference section for further detail.

    4. Prepositions

    Refer ss to the Grammar Reference section at the back of the book. Do items with ss,


and explain the phrases.

    5. Phrasal verbs

    Bring in the phrases and explain them.

    6. Multiple choice cloze

    Ask ss to look at the title and the picture and try to guess what the article is about. Go through the tip. Explain that ss need to follow this advice in order to complete the task successfully. Explain the task. Ask ss to read the text quickly and silently to get the gist.

    7. Error correction

    Explain that in this kind of exercise ss are given a text in which some lines contain a mistake in the form of an extra word that needs to be removed. Refer ss to the tip on p. 13 if necessary. Go through the text sentence by sentence. Lead ss to understand each sentence and find out the mistakes.

    8. Key-word transformations

    Elicit the task, and point out that the second sentence should have the same meaning as the first one. Also point out that ss should use the word in bold without changing it and complete the gap with between two and five words.

    9. Idioms and fixed phrases

    Lead ss to complete the idioms and explain them in English.
