This time we come with something a little more traditional, but as you know, marker sketching is an essential skill for everyone in
car design. Say hello to 15-step tutorial by Michal Uhrin, student at AFAD in Bratislava, Slovakia. You can check out his blog at
http://mudesignworks.blogspot.com to see some more of his work. The tools used for this tutorial are A3 marker sketchbook,
regular BIC black ballpoint pen and Chartpak markers. Enjoy!
first, we lay out the basic perspective with wheels 01 –
02 – we add shapes and sketch the basic volume of the car in nice proportion
03 – continue with more detail, adding a few features like side mirrors, shape of the bumper and side skirts
04 – very important step – add cross sections to figure out surface treatment
05 – bring a little details into interior and headlamps
06 – now is the time to add basic body color, decide where to put light source and based on that, put color over shaded areas
07 – take a differrent marker (this time it’s grey) and add a bit of color to the wheels and interior, don’t forget your light source and
leave some white space for the reflections
08 – add another layer of marker with the same or a bit darker tone to define shapes little more precisely
09 – continue with surface definition, add more contrast where appropriate
10 – sketch is almost done, add highlight reflections towards the light source – this time with light blue marker to simulate the sky
11 – add a little more detail to the rear wheels and sign of the rear light with a drop of red.
