Main Engine Maintenance


    Component Work to be done Lubricating oil Spot test

     (engine) Laboratory analysis

    Cooling water Check inhibitor concentration

    (according to suppliers instruction)

    Bedplate Check holding-down bolt tension Main bearing Measure wear and check vertical bearing

     Clearance (reduce clearance if necessary)

    Check thrust bolt tension

    (retension if necessary)

    Remove and inspect main bearings

    Remove and inspect lower bearing shells

    Thrust bearing Check both axial and radial clearance

    Check that bottom drain hole is clear

    Remove and inspect thrust bearing segments

    Tie rods Check tension,retension if necessary Cylinder jacket Check the condition of the water guide ring and the water spaces

    Cylinder liner Determine the bore wear(in situ)

    Remove cylinder liner

    Remove wear ridge from bore

    Round off the scavenge port edges

    Re-cut the lubrication grooves

    Replace rudder rings

    Lubricating quills and Check for correct fuctioning and tightness accumulator

Piston rod glands Clean rings and determine wear (fit new parts as necessary)

    Cylinder head Inspect combustion chamber

     Clean sealing face for the fuel injectors in the cylinder head,

    Cylinder head re-machine seat if necessary

Fuel injector Check tightness of all external connections

    Test spray (dependent on the fuel treatment)

    Clean and overhaul injector nozzles

    Lap the contact faces of the nozzle holder

    Starting valve Feel the pipe before the valve while the engine is running.If it is

    hot,the valve has to be dismantled

    Remove one starting valve and dismantle (random check). On

    (Depending on its condition ,determine the time schedule for

    overhauling the remaining valves)

    Cylinder head Test, dismantle,reassemble and adjust

    relief valve

    Exhaust outlet Overhaul and regrind the valve seat and spindle by machine if

    Valve necessary

    Crankshaft Measure crank deflections (in any case if vessel has gone aground) Viscous torsional Remove a silicon fluid sample

    vibration damper

Turning gear Check oil level,top up oil if necessary.

     Check oil condition and charge oil if necessary

Upper and lower Check bearing clearances

    connecting rod bearing Inspect bearings and replace if necessary

    Removal and fitting of a connecting rod

    Guide shoes Check running clearances

    Crosshead pins In case running face of the bearing pin is rough,

     Turn the crosshead upside down for further use

     Remove crosshead when the piston has been removed

Working piston Withdraw, clean and measure grooves

    Open up cooling spaces and clean (at least one piston annually)

    Check tightness after re-assembly

    Visually check through the scavenge ports

    Enter charge air receiver and turn crankshaft with turning gear Working piston Align the piston cooling telescopic pipes

    Piston rings Remove,clean and determine wear,Fit new rings if necessary

    Piston cooling Remove stand pipes and check condition of the guide bushes.

    Dismantle telescopic pipe glands, clean and determine wear

    Piston underside Check the condition of the spaces and clean Camshaft driving Check condition of the teeth


    Check backlash and bearing clearance of the intermediate wheel

    Remove intermediate wheel

    Replacement of the 2-piece gearwheel on the crankshaft thrust

    bearing collar

    Camshaft bearings Determine bearing clearance (see Table of Clearance 012/10) Reversing servomotor Remove

    Fuel cams Inspect running surface

Actuator cams Inspect running surface

    Viscous torsional Remove a silicon fluid sample (see 021/2) vibration damper

    Starting control air Dismantle , clean and inspect

    distributor Check pilot valves for easy movement

    Starting air shut-off valve Vent

    Dismantle ,clean and inspect (seat and spring in particular)

    Check performance

    Running direction Check performance


    Shut-down servomotor Dismantle and clean

    Woodward governor Check oil level (top up if necessary)

    Charge oil (flush out casing)

    Safety cut-out device Dismantle ,clean and inspect (replace round rudder rings if


    Fuel injection pump Clean, remove and inspect valves

    Check timing and re-adjust if necessary

    Lap sealing faces for the valve covers

    Check and adjust relief valves

    Lubricating articulated joints of regulating linking

    Charge air receiver Observe outlet of the permanent drains

    Inspect,clean and recondition non-return valves

    ( or replace them with either a new or cleaned set)

    Clean receiver

    Check and clean the water separator elements Exhaust gas turbocharger Wash the compressor during services

    (every 25 to 75 running hours)

    Exhaust gas turbo-charger Wash the turbine during service

     (every 250 to 1000 running hours)

Air filter Clean

    (?Pmax .=150 mm WG)

    Auxiliary blower Clean impeller and casing

    Charge air cooler Clean during service (air side)

    Clean at standstill (air side)

    (?Pmax .=250 mm WG)

    Clean the inside of the water tubes

    Remove cooler for general cleaning Cylinder lubricating Drain and wash out housing


    P.T.O. gearbox Check the condition of the teeth;determine the backlash and bearing

     clearances(see Table of Clearances 012/9a)

    With External check for oil lekage and venting Geislinger coupling Inspection by dismantling the coupling,cleaning as well as renewal of

    all sealing rings

    Overhauling or replacement of the spring packs Balancer drive elements Retension the roller chains (initially after 500 h after fitting a new


     Measure stretch of roller chain (replace chain if necessary)


    Geislinger couling External check for oil lekage and venting

    Inspection by dismantling the coupling,cleaning as well as renewal of

    all sealing rings

    Overhauling or replacement of the spring packs

    Exhaust pipe Check the condition of the exhaust pipe mounting bolted connections

    Clean the sliding surfaces and inspect for wear

Pressure gauges Compare with master instrument

    And pyrometers

    Fuel and lubricating oil Clean or exchange filter inserts.(Depending on the make observe the filter suppliers special instructions)
