    What’s New

     Symmetrix software is available for the new Symmetrix V-Max series with Enginuity. The Advanced Tiered Storage Management is a new package for the Symmetrix V-Max

    series

     TimeFinder/Mirror is not available with Symmetrix V-Max (although customers still can use

    TimeFinder/Mirror scripts, enabled by TimeFinder/Clone Emulation). Enginuity 5874 is a required license to purchase with new and upgraded Symmetrix

    V-Max series systems.

     IPsec encryption on front-end Gigabit Ethernet ports no longer requires a software license. Note: None of these changes apply to the Symmetrix DMX-4 series.

    EMC Software Pricing Models in Use for Symmetrix

    There are several core pricing models in use for Symmetrix platform software. The model you

    propose depends on the customer’s specific requirements and the way the product is licensed

    and sold.

     Host-based pricing model: This model charges customers by the size of the server

    hosting the software. For example, Workgroup, Departmental, and Enterprise are three

    categories, with each one having its own price per server.

     Raw capacity pricing model: This model charges customers by the raw capacity of the

    Symmetrix system hosting the software. It uses a “base plus capacity” approach, where

    the customer purchases one base license and then purchases incremental capacity

    licenses to equal the raw capacity of the system.

    ; Note: For select software titles [currently SRDF/S, SRDF/A, TimeFinder/Clone, and

    TimeFinder/Snap], there are “-ADD” models available for customers wishing to

    purchase two licenses within a family [e.g., either SRDF/S and SRDF/A or

    TimeFinder/Clone and TimeFinder/Snap] for the same system. This provides the

    customer with an automatic 50 percent lower list price for the second title. This

    applies only to “base” models, not add-on options.

    In addition, customers who choose SATA or low-cost Fibre Channel drives can

    choose to “opt out” of licensing SRDF or TimeFinder software for the SATA or low-

    cost Fibre Channel drive capacity if they do not replicate on that capacity. Otherwise,

    they will receive an automatic 50 percent lower list price on Symmetrix raw capacity

    software products for the SATA or low-cost Fibre Channel raw capacity within the

    array.

     Registered capacity pricing model: This model charges customers by the capacity

    that is actually being registered for an application (excluding RAID overhead).

    For SRDF and TimeFinder family customers, registered capacity is based on the amount

    of usable capacity being replicated (including both sources and targets.) This pricing

    option provides significantly reduced costs for customers with relatively small

    requirements of replication (typically less than 40 percent for SRDF and less than 35

    percent for TimeFinder) compared to the total raw capacity of the system. For SRDF and

    TimeFinder, this option used to be known as “Replicated Capacity.” There is no

    mechanism to convert licenses between registered to raw capacity, so customers should

    look at long-term replication requirements before choosing registered capacity licensing.

    For Symmetrix Virtual Provisioning customers, registered capacity is based on the

    amount of physical usable capacity within the thin pool.

     Mainframe Service Unit (MSU) model (mainframe only): This model is used for

    several mainframe software products and charges customers by the total computing

    power (MSU) of the attached mainframe system(s) rather than by the capacity of the

    attached Symmetrix systems. This pricing method provides the customer with a license

    for a specific host(s) with no limitation on the amount of capacity in the attached

    Symmetrix.

     Enterprise Licensing Agreement (ELA) model: This model is designed to be a multi-

    year agreement for large accounts. Pricing is determined by total capacity (e.g.,

    terabytes, CPUs, etc.) installed and incremental capacity for license and maintenance.

    Contact your EMC Account Manager or local channel management team for more

    information and to confirm that an account qualifies for ELA pricing.

     Progressive Pricing Agreement (PPA) model: This model charges customers by the

    incremental or total capacity under management in a customer environment. For

    example, PPA licenses for PowerPath are based on the number of CPUs. PPA licenses

    for ControlCenter are based on raw capacity. Each PPA ties the software licenses to

    capacity under management in a customer environment, rather than individual arrays or

    servers. PPAs for PowerPath and ControlCenter can be found in Channel Express. For

    more information, contact your EMC Account Manager or local channel management

    team.

    Three products deviate from the pricing models listed above:

     EMC GDDR is priced per site, per managed consistency group/LPAR, meaning there is

    a fixed price per location’s participating LPARs. So if a customer desires a three-site

    EMC GDDR configuration, and each site has two LPARs participating in the EMC GDDR

    configuration, the customer would need two licenses for each location, for a total of six

    EMC GDDR licenses.

     EMC Certified Data Erasure for Symmetrix (the product, not the service offering) is

    priced using the raw capacity model, but it also requires an ongoing service fee and a

    maintenance fee.

     EMC Compatible HyperPAV, similar to IBM HyperPAV, is priced at a flat fee per system,

    with COM-PAV as a pre-requisite.

    Each of the first four pricing models listed above includes a provision for upgrades. For example,

    when adding capacity to a Symmetrix system that contains a capacity-based TimeFinder/Clone license, you will need to calculate the number of capacity (“C”) units that the customer requires based on the new capacity being added to the system.

    Channel Express are also built to automatically calculate the license costs for Fibre Channel drives and low-cost Fibre Channel drives while applying the appropriate discount to the low-cost Fibre Channel drives.

Licensing Examples

    All TimeFinder family licenses discussed below use the capacity-based pricing model based on the raw capacity of the Symmetrix system(s) on which the product operates, or based on the Symmetrix system attached to the server running the application. The SRDF family can be configured and priced using the raw capacity or registered capacity models. Regardless of the model used, the licenses required to deploy the configurations depicted below are the same. Configuring SRDF/Star
