    EMC Symmetrix V-Max Series Ordering Information and Configuration Guidelines

    This document outlines the Symmetrix V-Max series configuration rules and guidelines, and Direct

    Express and Channel Express ordering model numbers for the Symmetrix array. What’s New

    New Symmetrix V-Max series hardware platforms are purpose-built for the virtual data center.

    Symmetrix Configurations

    Symmetrix V-Max delivers over twice the application performance and three times the storage scalability of traditional high-end storage arrays. Symmetrix V-Max series offers extensive headroom to grow, starting with 96 drives and growing to a consolidated configuration with 2,400 drives. The Symmetrix V-Max SE model starts with 48 drives and can grow to 360 drives. All Symmetrix V-Max series configurations support a mixture of Fibre Channel, SATA, and

    enterprise Flash drives and allow customers to run open systems, mainframe, and System i hosts on a single array. A full complement of advanced Symmetrix software is supported and immediately available with Symmetrix V-Max. The table below lists the minimum and maximum drive counts for the Symmetrix V-Max configurations.

    1 The Symmetrix V-Max SE cannot be expanded beyond 360 drives, as adding more V-Max Engines is not possible. Symmetrix V-Max SE Base Configurations

    To simplify the ordering of system bays, storage bays, and cabling, Symmetrix configurations are presented in Direct Express and Channel Express in pre-set base configurations. A Symmetrix V-Max SE has a single engine and therefore cannot be configured beyond 360 drives.

    All currently orderable base configurations are listed in Appendix A.

    After one of the base configurations has been selected, front-end host and SRDF family connections and drives are added to meet your customer’s configuration requirements.

    Symmetrix V-Max Base Configurations

    (Systems other than the Symmetrix V-Max SE)

    To simplify the ordering of system bays, storage bays, and cabling, Symmetrix configurations are presented in Direct Express and Channel Express in pre-set base configurations. The base configurations start by selecting the number of Symmetrix V-Max Engines. All currently orderable base configurations are listed in Appendix A.

    After one of the base configurations has been selected, front-end host and SRDF family connections and drives are added to meet your customer’s configuration requirements.

    Disk Drive Configuration Rules and Guidelines

    Hard drive and Flash drive usable capacity and models numbers are listed in Appendix B.

     Storage bays can be populated with combinations of 146 GB, 300 GB, and 450 GB 15,000

    rpm Fibre Channel drives; 400 GB 10,000 rpm Fibre Channel drives;

    1 TB 7,200 rpm SATA II drives; and 200 GB and 400 GB Fibre Channel Flash drives.

     Different capacities or different speeds can be mixed in Symmetrix V-Max series systems,

    and locations on drive loops may affect application performance. Consult your Symmetrix

    Champion or Speed Guru for guidelines for optimal configurations of mixed drive sizes and

    speeds. Channel partners should consult their EMC Account Manager or local channel

    management team.

     A minimum of five hard disk drives must be configured on each drive loop within each

    direct connect storage bay. A minimum of four hard disk drives must be configured on

    each drive loop within each daisy chained storage bay.

     All Symmetrix V-Max disk drives, enterprise Flash drives, and back-end links run at

    4 Gb/s speed.

     Reserved capacities:

    ; 5 GB on the first five drives of every drive loop (200 GB per V-Max Engine) is reserved

    for memory vaulting. Flash drives cannot be used for memory vaulting.

    ; 64 GB of total disk capacity is reserved for internal Symmetrix file system use.

     RAID protection rules:

    ; All Symmetrix RAID protection levels can be used with hard disk drives and enterprise

    Flash drives in a Symmetrix V-Max system.

    ; All protection types can co-exist in the same system.

     Spare-drive rules:

    ; The Direct Express/Channel Express Configurator automatically calculates the number

    of spares required for the system.

    ; For hard disk drives, two spares for every 100 drives (or portion thereof) are required

    for each unique hard disk drive type in the system, based on rotational speed and

    capacity as well as block size. A minimum of eight hard disk drive spares are required

    for Symmetrix V-Max systems.

    ; For Flash drives, systems with 32 or fewer Flash drives, one spare Flash drive is

    required for each drive size. A minimum of two per 100 are required for Symmetrix V-

    Max systems with greater than 32 Flash drives for each drive size.

    ; The total number of spares required for each system is enforced by SymmWin at

    installation or upgrade. At installation or upgrade, if the system does not have the

    required number of spares, SymmWin will not be able to complete the installation.

Front-End Port Configurations Rules and Guidelines

    The Symmetrix V-Max series scales to 128 front-end ports, depending on protocol type. Front-end connections are available to support several protocols. The Symmetrix V-Max series supports open systems, System i, and mainframe connections:

     Fibre Channel: Open systems and System i host interfaces (single-mode or multi-mode)

     Gigabit Ethernet: RDF connections (multi-mode), with support for IPv6, as well as IPsec

     Gigabit Ethernet: iSCSI host connections (multi-mode) with support for IPv6

     FICON: Enhanced mainframe interfaces (single-mode or multi-mode)

    Mixed mainframe (FICON) and open systems (Fibre Channel and/or iSCSI) interfaces in the same array are supported for both the Symmetrix V-Max and the Symmetrix V-Max SE, and require Symmetrix Enterprise Storage Platform (ESP) software.

    Appendix D lists the combinations of protocols and optics of currently available Symmetrix V-Max front-end I/O modules.

    Global Memory

    Symmetrix V-Max systems can be configured with up to 1 TB of physical memory. Symmetrix V-Max SE systems are limited to a maximum of 128 GB physical memory.

    Due to extensive configurability, complex cache calculations are required to determine the minimum and maximum cache memory allowed in a configuration.

    When building Symmetrix V-Max configurations in Direct Express or Channel Express, cache calculation tools automatically run in the background. These tools ensure that the cache memory is correct for the configuration entered. Any configuration change may require a different cache memory configuration.

    Symmetrix V-Max Engines are available in three different configurations of cache memory: 32 GB, 64 GB or 128 GB. Configurations with greater than one V-Max Engine will need to have at least two V-Max Engines of a given cache memory size in order to provide mirrored memory within the Symmetrix V-Max system.

    Some Symmetrix V-Max configurations may also be limited by the maximum amount of available memory.

    Memory may be added to Symmetrix V-Max system configurations, not to exceed the maximum allowable.

    Note: SymmWin will enforce the memory configuration. If a system is not configured with an allowable memory size, the configuration will not be allowed to complete.

    Power Configuration Rules and Guidelines

     Symmetrix V-Max and V-Max SE configurations require three-phase A/C power, available in

    both Delta and Wye configurations. Power type is defaulted to Delta or Wye based on the

    country of installation specified in Direct Express or Channel Express. This default can be

    overridden if required.

     The Symmetrix V-Max SE system bay is also available in single-phase power. Single phase

    Symmetrix V-Max SE systems are limited to the system bay with up to 120 drives. All stand by power supplies (SPS units) for engines and drives are automatically configured by

    Direct Express and Channel Express.

     Two power cables are required for each Symmetrix V-Max system bay and each storage bay.

    The single phase Symmetrix V-Max SE system bay requires four power cables. Required connectors and extension cords will be added by Direct Express and Channel

    Express based on the country of installation. Optional extension cords can be added if

    required.

    Modem Configuration Rules and Guidelines

     All systems are automatically configured with EMC Secure Remote Support Gateway. Modem support is optional.

     Modem is universal for worldwide use.

     Direct Express and Channel Express will add a Telco kit for international installations. No external power connection is required.

    Availability and Ordering

    Symmetrix V-Max listed configurations became orderable in April 2009.
