Welcome to Baton Rouge!
SCMLA has a group room rate of $129 per night single/double at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center. To reserve
your hotel room for the SCMLA conference rate, please use the reservation code “South Central Modern Language
Association.” Call (225)344-5866 or reserve your room ONLINE at www.ou.edu/scmla. To receive the special SCMLA
conference rate, you must reserve your room before SEPTEMBER 28, 2009.

From Lafayette: Take I-10 East and merge from I-110. Take North Street exit heading West toward the river. Turn
left on Lafayette Street. Hotel is located on the right 2 blocks down.
From BTR Airport: Take I-110 South to North Street Exit. Head West toward the Mississippi River. Turn left on
Lafayette Street. The hotel is located on the right, 2 blocks down.
From New Orleans: Take I-10 West through Baton Rouge and take I-110 North to North Street. Head West
toward the Mississippi River. Turn left on Lafayette Street. Go 2 blocks, and the hotel is on the right at 201
Complimentary Airport Shuttle Service to and from the Hilton Capitol Center Hotel: You can pre-arrange for a
pick-up time by calling the hotel directly at 225-344-5866 or you can call once you arrive to the airport. The
shuttle takes about 15-20 minutes to arrive at the airport.
Parking: The hotel offers valet parking only at the entrance of the Hilton Capitol Center Hotel: $16.00 overnight
and $9.00 for short term/event parking. There is a self-park “Allright” lot adjacent to the hotel (corner of
Lafayette and Florida)-$5.00 per day. Off-site Parking Garage: Third Street Parking Garage (corner of Third
Street and Convention Street)-$6.00 per day.
SCMLA Keynote Presentation & Welcome Social: May Waggoner, Laborde-Neuner Professor of French and Francophone Studies at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, will give the keynote presentation entitled, “Waiter! There’s some French in my Naturalism: the Francophone Literature of Nineteenth-Century Louisiana” on Thursday, October 29 at 6:00p.m. in Riverview A. Everyone is invited to attend the Welcome Social, following the keynote, from 7:30-9:00p.m., poolside.
Plenary Address: Creator and Founding Director of the United States Civil War Center, Louisiana State University, David
Madden will give the plenary address Friday, October 30, at 5:45p.m. in Riverview A. Robert Penn Warren Professor
Emeritus and Chair of the Louisiana Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, Madden’s address is entitled “Reconfiguring
the South as Fact and Fiction.” Afterwards, the President’s Reception, with complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres, will be
Women’s Caucus Breakfast: Friday, October 30, 7:30-8:45a.m. in the Heidelberg Room. Please be sure to mark your
registration form to participate.
South Central College English Association Breakfast: Saturday, October 31, 7:45-9:00a.m. in the Heidelberg Room. Please be sure to mark your registration form to attend the SCCEA Breakfast.
French, German, & Spanish Social: This year the language groups will once again host a social. On Friday, October 30,
from 4:00-5:30p.m. the French, German, and Spanish representatives will host a reception for members to share ideas and
information pertinent to their disciplines. Please be sure to mark your registration form if you plan to attend this social.
SCMLA Luncheon and Business Meeting: Pre-register to join us for the SCMLA Luncheon and Business Meeting on Friday
from 12:30-2:00p.m. in the Heidelberg Room. The program includes the Presidential Address by John Morris, plus awards,
announcements, and SCMLA news. Pre-ordered meal stickers will be in your packet at the SCMLA Registration desk.
Workshop for Academic Jobseekers & Mock Interviews: On Saturday, October 31, from 9:15-10:30a.m. the South Central Association of Departments of Foreign Languages and Departments of English will sponsor the workshop followed
by interviews from 11:00a.m.-12:30p.m. in the Riverview Ballroom A. All SCMLA members are encouraged to attend and
to bring CVs, job letters, and questions relating to a job search. Please contact Grady Wray by email at email@example.com to
schedule an interview.
The Scholar’s Choice/Publisher Contact Form: With the help of The Scholar’s Choice, SCMLA has developed a contact
form for you to send to your publisher(s) to request that your book(s) be displayed at the SCMLA Book Exhibit. Along with
the contact form is a set of guidelines to aid you in making your request. The form is included in this mailing. Please submit
by September 18, 2009.
Convention Program: Please note that your program will be available upon arrival at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol
Center. The preliminary SCMLA Baton Rouge Convention program is available on the SCMLA website www.ou.edu/scmla.
SCMLA Book Exhibit: The Book Exhibit, located on the ground floor of the Hilton Capitol Center in the foyer, will be open
from 12:00 noon-6:00p.m. Thursday, 8:00a.m.-5:00p.m. Friday, and 8:00a.m.-1:00p.m. Saturday.
On-site Registration: Beginning at 12:00 noon Thursday, October 29, pre-registered members may pick up their
convention packets, including badges (required for admission to individual sessions and the Book Exhibit). Packets will
include any meal stickers ordered, final convention program, and information to Baton Rouge sites and events. The
Registration Desk will be located on the ground floor of the Hilton with Local Arrangements Committee members available
to assist with your convention needs. The on-site registration fee is $60, $25 for Graduate students; a limited number of
meal function tickets will be available for on-site registrants. Credit card on-site registration will be $62.50 + proc. fee
and $26.00 + proc. fee for graduate students.
ON-LINE REGISTRATION & 2010 Membership Dues
Again this year you will be able to register for the Baton Rouge convention and pay your membership dues on-line. You
can pay for the following on-line via www.ou.edu/scmla: Baton Rouge 2009 conference registration, meals including the
Friday business luncheon, the Women’s Caucus breakfast and the SCCEA breakfast, and 2010 membership dues. This year
we have instituted three-year memberships. This allows you to pay for your SCMLA membership through 2012 at a
savings. You will also be able to vote for new executive committee members and South Central Review consulting editors.
On our website there is a link to the convention hotel for you to make your on-line hotel room reservation. However, if you
would like to continue to pay as you have in the past, you still have the option of pre-registering and paying dues by
sending a check to the SCMLA offices at the University of Oklahoma. Just fill out the registration form at the end of this
document and send it with a check to the address provided (processing fees are not applicable if paying by check). Pre-
