Procedure To Configure VPN Client in Linux (Fedora Core

     Procedure To Install and Configure VPN Client in Linux (Fedora Core 6 X86_64)


    1. Copy the installation file vpnclient-linux-x86_64- to /tmp (location doesn’t matter)

    2. Untar the installation file ( from command prompt go to /tmp and give the command tar xvf vpnclient-linux-x86_64-

3.You will get a folder named vpnclient ,go to that folder and You can see the

    installation file named vpn_install .Remove the line #include <linux/config.h>

    from the following files.

     linuxcniapi.c, frag.c, interceptor.c, IPSecDrvOS_linux.c

5.install the following rpms




    6.Boot from 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 kernel ( To boot from this kernel edit /etc/grub.conf suitably)

    NB: After editing /etc/grub.conf it looks as follows.. ( you have to make appropriate changes your own)

# grub.conf generated by anaconda


    # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file # NOTICE: You do not have a /boot partition. This means that # all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /, eg. # root (hd0,4)

    # kernel /boot/vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/sda5

    # initrd /boot/initrd-version.img






    title Fedora Core (2.6.18-1.2798.fc6)

     root (hd0,4)

     kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet

     initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6.img

    title Fedora Core (2.6.18-1.2798.fc6xen)

     root (hd0,4)

     kernel /boot/xen.gz-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6

     module /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6xen ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet

     module /boot/initrd-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6xen.img

title Other

     rootnoverify (hd0,0)

     chainloader +1

This will boot from 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 kernel

7. Execute vpn_install using ./vpn_install .It will ask for installation details as


for both of the above questions ,just press enter key

    8.Next it will ask for Directory Containing linux kernel source code.

    /lib/modules/kernel-version/build is the default linux kernel source code directory..Press Enter key here .If its not showing the default source code directory,then you will have to install the source code which is suitable for the kernel which is already installed.

    9.Next it will ask whether all the information that we have given is correct or not.. press enter key here

10. You can view the installation steps as below

Now the installation is over .. Next step is to make a profile ….

    11. Go to the folder /etc/opt/cisco-vpnclient/Profiles .There you can see a sample.pcf file.. copy it in the name ipsec.pcf ( whatever name u like.But extension should be .pcf)

edit the file as follows..

In the above screen fill up username (Use your IISCWLAN username )

    name this file as ipsec.pcf.

9.Next from command prompt give the command /etc/init.d/vpnclient_init restart

    to start vpn client service on your machine

10.Give the command vpnclient connect ipsec from command promt for connecting to

    VPN server .On executing this command u will be asked to enter group password when u connect the very first time .This will be written to the profile file ipsec.pcf. You have to enter username and password every time you connect to the VPN server

Give the password as VIGYAN-MANDIR

    IN the above screen give Your own username and password assigned for you

    If you reach till the above screen you are succeeded to connect to Cisco VPN server. Now you are in IISc network.For browsing internet you have to change your proxy settings by giving the proxy server name port 3128 and

    bypass for local IISc websites in the browser.
