D.Y. Sha received his master and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington, U. S. A. He is currently the Chair Professor at the Department of Technology Management of Chung Hua University, Taiwan. Professor He is also the President of Chung Hua University and the President of Taiwan TRIZ Association. He is the Fellow of the Chinese Society for Management of Technology. He has garnered several awards such as an industrial engineering medal from the Chinese Institute of Industrial Engineering, two silver medals of the National Invention and Creation Award from the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan, a silver medal of Taipei International Invention Show, and a silver and a bronze medal of Geneva International Invention Salon. Professor Sha‟s research interests include manufacturing strategy, production and operations management, and TRIZ systematic innovation. He can be reached at
Promotion and Implementation of Innovative & Creative Education

Innovation and creativity are one of the major trends of the times. In response to industrial restructuring, only those with innovative thinking can create enormous value. Innovation thinking also happens to be the most important key for
enterprises to survive and grow. Chung Hua University has been pushing innovative and creative education in recent years. The main goal is to enable
students to become creative and flexible so that they can be more competitive in the job market and possess a global vision. This article categorizes the current implementation of innovative and creative education for all disciplines, mainly to promote the following four programs: (1) the promotion of an innovation curriculum, (2) the establishment of Center of Innovation and Creativity, (3) Innovation and Creativity Training Camp for Teachers, and (4) Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competitions at home and abroad. Our prospect is to continue to promote innovative and creative education and cultivate among our students a forward-looking, international outlook, and innovative ideas and thinking.

Daniel H. Pink, a trend expert pointed out, in his book, A Whole New Mind, that
today's knowledge workers are too numerous to be automatically appreciated. If they want to win the employer's favor, they need to have not only specific professional capabilities, but also creative resourcefulness to win in the workplace. In view of this, Chung Hua University has started to prepare our teachers and students for the implementation of innovation and creativity. Through various activities, they are encouraged to be more creative and innovative at school so that they can meet the challenge of changes and business requirements. Currently, we have completed four major programs: universal implementation of innovative curricula, the establishment of Center of Innovation and Creativity, innovation and creativity training camps for
teachers, innovation and enterprise competitions at home and abroad. They are described in details in the following sections.
II. Concrete Practice of Innovation and Creativity
A. The Popularization of Innovative Curricula
A campus-wide Innovation & Creativity education is promoted. Each student from freshman to sophomore years is required to take some compulsory courses. For juniors and seniors, they are required to complete a team project. The team must be creative enough and give concrete expressions to their topic. For example, engineering majors can conduct their research on innovative technology and the development of new systems; Management majors on business model innovation and innovative consumer marketing strategy; Tourism majors students on innovative travel packages; Humanities majors students on developing cultural and creative spirit nd incorporating international ideas into art training; Architecture majors may use a
some of the cutting-edge „green materials‟ in their creative design.
Every department will offer both required and elective courses for freshmen and sophomores. For example, Department of Mechanical Engineering will offer "Creative Project"; Department of Business Management, "Creative Marketing"; Department of Architecture, "Creative Spatial Experience"; Department of Administration Management, "Cultural and Creative Industries"; Department of Information Management, "Multimedia and Creative Design"; Department of Recreation, "Creative Tourism", and so on. Juniors and seniors will focus their innovative training on implementing programs related to the team work. For example, Department of Business Administration will offer "Innovative and Creative project," Department of Foreign Languages and Literature offers "Creative Project and Implementation", Department of Hospitality offers "Hospitality Creative Project," and so on.
B. The Establishment of Center of Innovation and Creativity
On August 1, 1998, Center of Innovation and Creativity was established by teachers and students who regarded innovation as an important treasure. For their effort, they were able to construct a platform to help other teachers and students to find the source and energy of creativity, motivation and innovation thinking. And a pool of premium talents has been created. This center has the following features:
a. A Display Room for Inventive Outputs
Center of Innovation and Creativity has a couple of space designed for multiple functions such as achievement display, mini lectures, press conferences and
workshops. The space design is based on how to implement sustainable environmental protection and human health. All projects use green building materials, especially with no nails, clean, non-toxic, odorless and environmentally friendly construction method. The curvy design in the shape of an elegant pregnant woman in the Center entrance is a symbol of the school‟s effort to nurture talents like a mother.
Bright shining diamond-studded cumulative door inside the main wall is a previous achievement of teachers and students. It tells about our glorious history in the past two decades. In the teaching areas, colorful chairs were designed for both class discussions and display cabinets. The ceiling hangings are made of natural camphor wood. The release of its natural phytoncid can surely enhance learning effect. The five shelf partitions in work showcases can be used on both sides to maintain a good balance of space and lighting.
b. Monthly Creativity Challenge Contests
The Center will hold a Creativity Challenge Contest each month, mainly for the purpose of increasing students‟ abilities to create infinite value with an innovative mind and creative hands. The contest announces its theme on the first of each month and the deadline is at the end of each month, with the entries adjudicated by the tenth of the following month and results announced on the fifteenth. c. Credit Program to Promote Innovation & Creativity
One of the main goals for promoting innovation and creativity education school wide is to give our graduates an edge once they enter the job market. In addition to actively
promoting this program, “Innovation and Creativity Credit Program Working Group”
is responsible for planning it. The Working Group members include the Deans from all colleges, Director of Innovation and Creativity and Chair of General Education Center. The Dean of Management College is the coordinator for the program.
Undergraduate students from various departments may attend the program. To gain the program certificate, they have to take at least 15 credits including at least 6 required credits courses (core) and at least 9 credits in elective courses.

d. Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition
stCreativity in the 21 century is the key to good employment. Innovation can create resources and enterprise activity can turn resources into wealth. To encourage students to apply their knowledge to practical use, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship are closely connected with school-sponsored competitions. They encourage participations not only for inter-institution and cross-department teams but also with external units to develop new products or plan a new business unit. Contest registration is divided into two categories: The first innovation is in the field of science and technology. It‟s necessary to have a sound idea of commodity production and sales. This field contains the information and communications, electronics and optoelectronics, materials, chemistry and nanometer applications, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing and systems, energy and the environment, civil, mechanical and electrical construction. The second innovation is for the humanities including culture, arts, handicrafts, industrial and commercial design, leisure and tourism, food service, finance and business website.
Competitions are participated by teams, average five students in each group. There were more than 200 students this year. In addition to winning scholarship, the winners ranking from the first to the third place would be free to participate in a two-day “Training Camp for Elite Students”.
e. Seminars and Forums
To enhance creative thinking and innovation capacity, our school is expected to
co-sponsor the Third Cross-Strait Symposium of Innovative Approach and the Fifth Academic and Practical Seminars with Chinese TRIZ by the end of 2010.
The purpose of TRIZ methods is to enhance creative thinking, innovation, conflict resolution, R & D capabilities and to develop innovative contemplation and problem solving. The specific integration of effective and systematic technique and advantages, can definitely enhance R & D and design capabilities in the industry, or can even be widely used in the field of Business Studies and Management. On the basis of its accumulated reputation and experiences, the Chinese TRIZ Association continues to organize seminars, and invites international and cross-strait leading TRIZ Masters, experts and scholars to join the events. They can become a good platform for R & D and management innovation. We expect that TRIZ innovative thinking methods could be extended to all areas in Taiwan to improve R & D as well as management competitiveness in the industry.
Call-for-paper of the seminars include:
1. Development of TRIZ theory: TRIZ innovation methodology or the development process, industry-specific use of innovative processes, TRIZ integrated with other management methods, systematic and creative trends.
2. TRIZ Application: the results of TRIZ implementation in various fields such as engineering, information technology, design, biochemical, medical, agricultural, fishery, education, management, financial and decision-making.
3. Teaching of TRIZ: teaching, training methods and experiences sharing. 4. The effectiveness of TRIZ Promotion in the industry: the promotion of TRIZ in the industry, company cases, results and performance.
5. Others: systematic TRIZ creativity, related research of innovation management, application and promotion.
To enable teachers and students to have close interactions with industry, Center of Innovation and Creativity organized an "International Creative Design Forum" in which invited speakers were innovative masters who had won international IF or Reddot Design Award and this forum had been reported by Taiwan TV program, “Discovering Taiwan.”
f. Training Camp for Elite Students
To foster creativity and innovation of social care professionals, Center of Innovation & Creativity and Child Security Correctional Institutions in Miaoli, a social service organization, co-sponsored a two-day Elite Training Camp for students. The main purpose is to help students use creativity to develop workings tools for children and marketing plans.
On the first day, experts from Industrial Technology Research Institute explained the ideas about "Technology development of new business." Speakers not only stressed the importance of science and technology applied to humanitarian care, but
also analyze the characteristics of innovation and creativity and enterprise development mechanism to the students. Finally, they share their practical experiences with them. The creative Director from Industrial Technology Research Institute lectured on "A cool story of innovation and use of fractal scenario development." Coolcard is an important tool for the development of creative ideas. After using these tools, students can design more efficiently and develop their assistive devices programs.
During the study, participating students for child safety and aid tools design at Child Security Correctional Institutions presented their innovative ideas, supplemented with field definitions and recorded in the innovative tools cards. They brainstormed together and came up with more new ideas. Participants produced a total of two hundreds design ideas. The atmosphere was very warm and coolcards covered the entire bulletin board in the workshop. These ideas were compiled and recorded to assist the Child Security Correctional Institutions in dealing with child safety as well as obstacles encountered in life. After the talks and learning of the subject, the group can brainstorm at night and use coolcards to transform feasible ideas into concrete designs.
In the following day, the Chief of Guan-Ya Company lectured on intellectual property laws on patents and related concepts, so that students could fully grasp the basic concepts of innovation and potential problems. Speakers hope that students could understand the actual needs from kids at Young An Care Institute. The lecturer hoped that they could simulate themselves as users in order to focus on innovative ways closer to practical needs. Students made presentations and gave final reports on research, development and marketing proposals on child safety and aid tools. At the end of the camp, the administrative executives at Young An Care Institute and counselors at Counseling Group served as judges and commented on their ideas.
The event was productive. The proposal of creative design and plan by students indeed provided some good solutions and some rethinkings on child safety and aid tools. As for the students, they also learned through a deeper understanding of the true meaning of care and a dedication to the community.
C. Innovation and Creativity Training Camp for Teachers
During the process of promoting innovation and creative education, Chung Hua University not only nurtured creative talents but also designed a series of courses for teacher training. The school hopes that teachers can improve their teaching quality and develop second skills through a series of systematic training.
"Innovation and Creativity Training Camp for Teachers" is mainly sponsored by Center of Innovation and Creativity and Personnel Office. At the end of the semester, a two-day training camp will be held off campus. One teacher from each department is selected to participate in the camp. Table 3 contains some information on the previous teacher training camps.

The 21st century is an age of innovation. Without innovation, it will be hard for us to survive in a competitive world. Regardless at high-tech industries, traditional industries or services, we need creative ideas to improve product quality, manufacturing technology, marketing services and process so that we can change as promptly as possible, to grasp market opportunities. Teachers and students at Chung Hua University have won prizes in international competitions. We can see the University‟s exuberant energy of invention. It has excelled itself among Taiwan‟s
higher education institutions. Table 4 shows our award-winning records, and Table 5 gives the International Invention Exhibition profile in Geneva in the past two years.
