ENERGY ACTIVITY SHEET

Energy has a number of forms, all of which measure the ability of an object or system to do work on another object or system. There are different ways that an object or system can possess energy.

1. Follow the lesson and try to fill out table 1.

a. We are going to talk about energy and give definitions about certain forms of energy.

b. We are going to show you examples of those energy being used it’s up to you to match the

definitions and the examples.

2. List your findings in table 1 bellow.

Table 1: List of different forms of energy and examples of where they are used.

Forms of Energy Examples

Useful Definitions

Kinetic Energy: Energy related to motion. For instance consider a baseball flying through the air. The baseball is said to have “kinetic energy”.

Potential Energy: Potential energy is stored energy, and energy related to position. For example consider a table sitting on a table. The book is said to have “potential energy” because if it is pushed off, gravity will accelerate the book, giving the book kinetic energy.

Mechanical Energy: In general it is considered to be the total amount of kinetic and potential energy in a system.

3. Now you can classify your list; some of them might be forms of kinetic energy and others might be

forms of potential energy.

Table 2: classification of different forms of energy

Potential Energy: Energy of Kinetic Energy: The energy of

position; stored energy motion

5. (Each group will be assigned one station). Take a board and a marker to explain by using diagrams

what form(s) of energy is present in your assigned station.

Across (definitions) Your Answer

1. Energy contained in a moving object

2. Energy allowing your body to do

work.

4. Energy of position or stored energy.

Down Your Answer

2. Reactions that involve changes in the

structure of the nuclei of atoms.
