The American Revolution (革命) was victorious (获胜的) in 1783. The
British were defeated. The United States of America became an independent (独
立的) country. The 13 British colonies (殖民地)became 13 American states. The
new government had to choose a capital city. Each of the states wanted to be the
home of the capital. The states quarreled (争吵) about this. So the government
decided to build a completely new capital. They took some land from the state of
Maryland and some from the state of Virginia. This land on the River Potomac
which was given the name District Columbia. D.C., as it is usually called, does
not belong to any state. The new capital city was built in the north bank of the
river. It was named after Washington, the leader of the America Revolution and
the first President of the U.S.A.
Today Washington D.C. is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It has
wide avenues (大道) and lovely parks. There are fine monuments to honor the memory (记忆) of the famous American presidents. And there are many statues
of American heroes in the squares and parks. Many government buildings are

Capitol. The President of the U.S.A. lives and works in a large white house with a
beautiful garden. It is called the White House.
Washington D.C. is a government city. Many of the people work in
government offices or in other offices. It is not a industrial city. Many people are

top university specially for black Americans. It is Howard University.
In 1980 the population of the District of Columbia was just over half a
million. About 60% of the people are black Americans. The population of D.C. is

B What kinds of homes will we live in in the future? Nobody cab be sure, but
architects (建筑师), engineers, and scientists are working out new ideas now.
Some architects are thinking about building whole cities under huge glass
domes (圆屋顶). Of course, complicated (复杂的) heating and cooling system
(系统) will be necessary to control the climate in the domes. However, there will
never be any rain or snow, and the temperature will always be comfortable.
Perhaps everyone will live in vertical (垂直的) cities—high rises that are so
large that they can contain all the necessities of life. Since vertical cities will use
less land than horizontal (水平的) cities, and provide homes for more people, they will be practical (实际的) for small countries that have large populations.
Another idea that will be helpful to small countries (and island countries) is
the floating city. Monaco has already built homes, stores and offices on the water
of the Mediterranean Sea. And a Japanese architect has suggested a plan for
constructing buildings on bridges over Tokyo Bay.
There are some people who think we will go back to live in caves. But the
caves of the future will be very different from the caves of the Stone Age.
Computers will control light and climate. Farms and parks will be on the land
over the cave city. When people want to go to the country or a park, a short ride
in a elevator will take them there.

(Please give your requirements in details in Chinese so that someone can draw the two pictures to the exact demand.)
In the past our village was very poor, and you could see broken cottages
everywhere. The only things that the villagers were proud of were the pagoda and
the old tree beside it, both of which were said to date from the Tang Dynasty.
Now our village has turned into a small town. Old huts have been pulled
down and you can see tall buildings everywhere. There are not only wide
streets, but also shops, hotels, a hospital and a school. The only things that the
old village left were the pagoda and the old tree in the center of the village,
which tell people how old the village is.
