Dispute Resolution Experience
CEDR Accredited Mediator with extensive mediation experience of disputes from ?10,000 to ? 10.000,000 in value. Also
mediated disputes of no financial value such as those under aegis of Housing Ombudsman Facilitated successful resolution of
two major civil engineering disputes. Named Adjudicator in contracts for various employers. Frequently appointed as
adjudicator following nominations from ICE, CIC and CEDR. Regularly prepared and defended claims for contractors,
sub-contractors and employers for settlement by negotiation and/or arbitration. Frequently appointed as an Expert Witness in
arbitration and litigation, including appointment by international Tribunal and as joint expert following CPR.
Nearly 40 years experience in roads, bridges and airports, docks and harbours, pipelines, tunnels, mechanical/electrical systems, buildings,
offshore structures and shipbuilding. Has been responsible for execution, design and administration of contracts in UK and internationally.
Recent experience has been focused on problem resolution activities, for some of the world’s largest projects.
1965–71 Costain Civil Engineering Ltd: Engineer/Manager on roads, bridges and airports in UK.
1971–74 Rendel Palmer & Tritton: Senior Engineer, design and review of major bridges.
1974–75 Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick & Partners: Assistant Director (Indonesia) for World Bank study of labour intensive construction
1975–82 Rendel Palmer & Tritton: Chief Engineer and Resident Representative in Bahrain and then Indonesia responsible for contract
negotiations, preparation of tender documents and contracts, detailed design, contract administration and site supervision,
evaluation of claims and settlement of final accounts for roads, bridges, marine works and buildings.
1982–97 High-Point Rendel: Director since 1986, specialising in dispute resolution by independent advice, claims preparation/defence
and advocacy targeted to achieve successful settlements for clients without recourse to arbitration/litigation. He also provides
arbitration/litigation support including a wide range of appointments as an expert witness. He has been active in the
development of alternative dispute resolution procedures; particularly adjudication and mediation. Based upon his
experience in problem resolution he has assisted many major clients by independent project appraisals, risk assessments and
development of appropriate procurement strategies both in UK and internationally. 1997–98 High-Point Rendel: Director – UK Operations, responsible for both engineering and commercial services.
1998– High-Point Rendel: Director – Business & Management Solutions for UK, Europe, Africa and Middle East.
Europe, Middle East, North Africa and South East Asia.

Director of CEDR (Centre for Dispute Resolution). Past member of Board of Advisers to ECI (European Construction Institute).
Past member of Western Europe Committee of BCB (British Consultants Bureau).
Lecturer on alternative dispute resolution, project risks, appropriate procurement strategies and disputes under
FIDIC. Lecturer on box girder bridges for CONSTRADO and on soil mechanics at South Bank Polytechnic earlier in career.
