The Department of Mathematics and Science Education Selected to

Unveil Mural-Sized Hubble Telescope Image of the Orion Nebula

Greenville, NC East Carolina University’s College of Education Department of

Mathematics and Science Education is one of two locations in North Carolina selected to participate in a national unveiling of a breathtaking, mural-sized image of the Great Orion Nebula. The stunning photograph of the famous Great Orion

Nebula shows the turbulent star birth cloud in exquisite and unprecedented detail by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. ECU and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences in

Raleigh, NC will unveil the image on Wednesday, January 11, 2006. Seventy

participants in the United States and 3 international participants were selected to unveil the latest image of the Orion Nebula. Mr. Shawn Laatsch, in the College of Education’s

Department of Mathematic and Science Education, will unveil the images at 3:00 p.m. in

Flanagan Hall, Room 312 on ECU’s campus. The new Hubble image will be on

display in Flanagan Hall and will travel to local schools with Mr. Laatsch as part of his astronomy education outreach programs.

The 4-foot-by-4-foot picture, an immense seamless mosaic of 104 Hubble images, reveals a tapestry of star formation with features never before seen. It is one of the

largest and most magnificent images ever taken by the Hubble telescope.

The Earth-orbiting observatory was deployed in space on April 25, 1990. Hubble orbits above Earth’s murky atmosphere, which distorts light from celestial objects. During its 15+ years of viewing the universe, the Hubble telescope has taken more than 700,000

snapshots of celestial objects such as galaxies, dying stars, and giant gas clouds, the birthplace of stars. The telescope gave the world a front-row seat to watch chunks of a comet slam into the giant planet Jupiter. Hubble also photographed galaxies that existed billions of years ago, when the universe was a youngster.

Media in attendance for the unveiling will receive an Orion Nebula press kit that includes press release text, high resolution images and photo captions.
