Who determines the report result?

    There are about 200 million netizens in China who are active in the application of various NetEase

    Internet products. They come from different regions of China and are engaged in different industries, but every click or search they have done, and any words they have posted on the Internet, have contributed to this report.

How was the data analyzed?

    The data was analyzed by collecting original data from five system platforms of NetEase, i.e., NetEase Blog, NetEase BBS, Youdao Search Engine, Netease Channels, and NetEase Posts. Such data were then used for linear conversion and linear transformation by standard statistical methods without changing the data order or distribution form. This produced a normal status measure, called the Internet transmission index, for each respective collection item.

Part I Internet Hot Figures of the Year

1 Liu Xiang

    Liu Xiang was the men‟s 110-metre hurdles champion at the Athens Olympics Games and Chinas

    first male Olympic track champion. Due to an injury, he withdrew from the first round of the mens 110m hurdles at the Beijing Olympics Games, leaving his public in shock.

2 Yao Ming

    Since 2002, Yao Ming has been selected to start in the NBA All-Star Game in all six of his seasons. In 2005, he broke the record for most All-Star votes. Yao has also led the Chinese team to the

    Olympic mens basketball quarter finals twice. He deserves the title of No. 1 superstar in China Sports.

3 Edison Chen

    An actor from Hong Kong, Edison Chen acted in Internal Affairs and numerous other movies, and

    An EEG actress who formed a music group named Twins with Charlene Choi, Gillian Chung caused a sensation with her involvement in the Naked Picture Scandal in late January 2008.

5 Andy Lau

    Andy Lau is a renowned actor and singer in Hong Kong, referred to as one of the “four kings of

1 Sichuan Earthquake

4 Financial Crisis

    A full-scale sub-prime mortgage crisis erupted in the U.S. in the summer of 2007, eventually developing into a global financial crisis in September 2008.

5 Sanlu Toxic Milk Powder

    Milk powder produced by Sanlu Group was discovered to contain melamine, which was believed to be the cause of a urinary system abnormality of over 294,000 babies throughout China.

6 Faked Photo of the South China Tiger

    Netizens cast doubt on the authenticity of a photo of South China tiger taken by Zhou Zhenglong (a local hunter) and released by the Shaanxi Forestry Bureau. This marked the beginning of an open conflict between China‟s grassroot netizens and production of faked goods.

7 Shenzhou VII

    At 16:41 on September 27, Chinese astronaut Zhai Zhigang floated out of the mother ship, Shenzhou VII, making China the third country capable of sending human beings into space to perform space walking.

8 Presidential Election of the United States

    On November 4, 2008, Barack Obama, the Deomcratic presidential candidate of the United States,

    thbeat his opponent, John McCain, and was elected the 56 president of the U.S. Obama is the first

    African-American president in American history.

9 Thunderstuck

    Thunderstruck is Internet slang popular among netizens. Originally from a dialect in the northeast of Zhejiang Province, it means “stumble” or “crash. The word has evolved to mean “faint” or

    being too surprised to comment” in China‟s contemporary Internet vocabulary.

10 Shanzhai

    Originally referring to the stronghold of robbers in the mountains, Shanzhai is now often used to

    describe copycat brands without independent R&D capacity, which survive in the market by producing goods similar to those of big brands. This is now regarded as a social culture of anti-mainstream grassroots.

    Founder of Cheung Kong Holdings and Hutchison Whampoa Limited (HWL), Li Ka-Shing is a noted philanthropist and the richest person of Chinese descent in the world. He was formerly Asia‟s richest person.

3 Li Ning

    Li Ning, the Prince of Gymnastics, is China‟s most famous Olympic Champion and was the last

    torch bearer at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. He has successfully transitioned into a sports businessman.

4 Huang Guangyu

    Chairman of the Board of both GOME Electrical Appliances Holding Limited and Beijing Pengrun Investment and China‟s richest man, Huang Guangyu has a classic Chinese rags-to-riches

    story. On 23 November 2008, he was arrested and is now under investigation by Public Security Bureau for manipulating the market.

5 Wang Yung-Ching

    Founder of Formosa Plastics Corporation, “God of Management” in Taiwan, and formerly

    Taiwan‟s richest, he died in the U.S. on 15 October 2008.

6 Ma Yun

    Ma Yun is Chairman of Board and Chief Executive Officer of Alibaba Group. In early 2008, his email with the subject Mission of Winter was widely circulated. He had been well prepared for the severe winter weather.

7 Niu Gensheng

    Founder of Mengniu Group, Niu Gensheng has 27 years‟ experience in the dairy industry. The

    melamine contamination event of 2008, however, brought the business leader to an unprecedented crisis.

8 Zhang Yin

1 Prison Break

5 Blue-and-white Porcelain

    This was composed by Jielun Zhou, and the lyrics were written by Fang Wenshan. Since Jay sang this song at the 2008 CCTV Spring Festival evening gala, it has become a very popular song among netizens.

6 We Chinese

    Superstars from E.E-Media, such as Li Yuchun, He Jie, Su Xing, and Yu Haoming, sang for the victims of the Wenchuan earthquake.
